Even just being American is a fair excuse. I’m Australian and our pronunciations are much closer than Americans are to British names.
However, when I first moved to London I tripped up on a few. Streatham and Holborn got me.

Well, it ain't because they're American that they're screwing these names up. We have towns in Massachusetts here in America with the same names that are pronounced the same way, & ppl from other states here in the USA botch their pronunciations up as well. So, dearest Europeans, know that the USA is a very big place with a myriad of different cultures & accents just like yr own countries.
