Create a SUPER GLOW Preset | Deep Glow Lookalike with NO PLUGINS | After Effects Tutorial

- Want a better glow or even a Super Glow in After Effects? Like Deep Glow or VFX Optical Glow? But without plugins?
Well, not quite possible with After Effects’ native glow effect alone.
In this After Effects tutorial I’m gonna show you how to create quasi photoreal Neon Glow physically based on the inverse square law.
Of course with NO PLUGINS!

Thank you 😊. You mean a 3D shape or object? However, everything that’s precomposed is suitable. Shapes with thin lines work best.
I mean 3D shape created in AE with the materials option. I did try pre composing but somehow the effects did not work anymore. Guess I need to dig a little deeper into the 3D possiblities of AE 😅@@MichaelPonch

Apparently,when i try to add this with something like,find edges,for some reason it only shows white?
Should i connect some stuff or something like that to the super glow?

Could be because I'm using images as opposed to a 3d shape but this just straight up doesn't work for me 😔
I did everything as tutorial but when I use this Calculations effect and use Overlay the Fill stays white and i cannot get rid off it, any help
Hi 👋. Maybe it has something to do with the base color which could be too bright or too saturated. You could slightly tweak the color to be darker and/or desaturated.
U should have zoomed in when recording.we could barely see what u are clicking

I get divide by zero errors even if I give the slider a minimum value of 5. How can this be avoided? You mention clamping but should this be applied to the slider or the radius expression...?
I already own Deep Glow and Real Glow, but I wanted to learn how it works and how to do a plugin-free setup.
Hi Peter! I don’t have the expression in my mind anymore. In any case it’s the divisor you have to clamp. If the number that is beeing divided by just the radius then clamp the radius. If it’s x/radius then clamp radius. If it’s x/(y*radius) then clamp (y*radius). Hope that is understandable 😊
I've downloaded your aep-file, but there are no effects/presets included? The layer SuperGlow doesnt has any effect applied to it. Anyway thanks for sharing this nice tut!
Hi! This is just the free project file for the tutorial. You have to tap the other box “After Effects Preset (.FFX)…..” to download the preset 😊

It works well on shapes and texts but How is it possible to apply this effect to png images too?

Thank you! Yeah a downside with my preset. Deep Glow/Optical are definitely better in this. But without knowing your footage this could be a work around: Duplicate your PNG in the timeline and adjust contrast so that just have the hightlights of your image. Then use the unmult plugin (it's free) to make the darker parts transparent. Then precompose it all. On the precomp apply my Preset. Long story short: my preset works best with elements on a transparent background. Hope that helps.
Hi I bought the preset but when I opened the project file there was no preset to save as “animation preset” the “effects controls” is empty :(
Hi! The effects are on the layers. Select them all and save as Animation preset. But the easier way is to install the .ffx file into your User Presets folder. Hope that helps.

My AE is not showing pick whip for parenting the effects
Have turned on all icons on the bottom left? Could be that the column with the pick whip is turned off. Hope that solves your problem 😊
Nice work, but you missed a lot of the cool things Deep Glow does with colour/light mixing.
Just tack the cost of a plugin onto a clients bill and save the time.

Does anyone know if Adobe ever plan to improve the glow effect so we don't need plugins?
i think in future adobe can bcoz i see photoshop 2014 glow which is not much good but in 2019 it improved alot so i think in after effects will also if adibe wish
Welcome 😊. I remember when Adobe introduced Camera Lensblur. Maybe as an answer to Frischluft’s photorealistic Depth-of-field plugin. So there’s hope they’ll do the same with the glow 😎

My 2013 iMac dies at 4 iterations on Fast Box blur.. LOL CC Crossblur has in built cc composite add mode by the way.

For some reason, my After Effects can't seem to recognize the variable "gf" and it gives me a warning saying it's not a number I can divide.

Hi 👋. Maybe the slider is set to 0. Set it to another value before you link “gf” to the slider.

hi, i had this issue and i fixed it by setting all the sliders (glow size, falloff, amount) to 100 and then it fixed itself

I've downloaded and tried your last step of changing blend mode to Add, but I'm unable to change to any other blend mode.
Right. I intentionally limited it to a few blending modes because the others didn’t make sense to me. However you could deactivate the expression in the blending mode parameter and switch to another blending mode in that effect.

I guess I'm confused because in your tutorial you specifically set it to "Add" as the last step making it look more like neon...which is the effect I want. @@MichaelPonch
@@joeltell sorry, now I get it. In the video it was the 1st version I used. Not the updated v02. It should then work because you set add directly in the calculation effect
@@MichaelPonch I'm looking in specifically in "Optional: Calculations" and this is where I can't change the blending mode. Is there somewhere else I should look.

Hey 👋. If you are on windows you have to put the FFX file into the folder User/[yourusername]/documents/Adobe/AfterEffects/User Presets
You can also google “Install FFX in After Effects”

As soon as you installed it open the Effects&Presets Panel and you’ll find my preset in Animation Presets>User Presets

i cant type GF-effect (it's error) i dont know why?
In the expression window? It must be the line “gf=……….” like shown in the video. Other wise there will be an error.
@@MichaelPonch I ran into the same problem and then realized my Glow Falloff slider was still set to "0" when I entered the expression. An error occurs when AE tries to divide effect("Fast Box Blur")("Blur Radius") by 0.
@@kurtramschissel846 ah….now I understand the problem. The easiest way is to avoid to set the slider to Zero 😂. Or use the clamp expression to limit the range: clamp(input,minimum,maximum). Thanks for the hint.

Do you mean on a 3D Layer or 3D rendering? Both should work if you precompose them first and then apply the effects.

Thanks for watching my tutorial. There are two options to download. You downloaded the free project file for the tutorial. The other download option contains the .ffx preset 😊
