Don't feel bad for losing. Nuzlocking this game with ALL 20 cars is already brutal and takes some a degree of luck. To only be allowed to use the starter cars is almost impossible. The drag events are specially RNG-heavy in this game. I struggle to see anyone beating this challenge any time soon.
I see you picked the Tires upgrade from TJ so let me give you a warning (or a tip if you're looking for ultimate difficulty). From what I can tell, the AI scales off of your performance which seems to include TJ's upgrades as well. If you skip them, the AI and its rubberbanding is a bit weaker. If you pick them, the AI gets stronger. The default TJ set that makes the game easier is Engine, ECU, and Nitrous. On the other hand, the most miserable setup I experienced so far has been Tires, Brakes, and Suspension. I had a run with Supra where I tried to make up for its poor handling by picking up compensating TJ upgrades and let me tell you... the benefits are barely marginal, but the downside is big. On PC at least, certain cars like the S2000 can rubberband as soon as the race starts. Meaning they get an immediate boost for 1-2 seconds and zoom ahead which makes every race against that car (Matt included) even worse since you start with a handicap. All this to say, if you're going to be doing Nuzlocke runs forget about handling upgrades. Only pick those during normal runs and when you're in a masochistic mood. Let me also say, and I didn't confirm this either, that the AI can draft you during drags. If you position yourself closely in front of them they seem to get a boost of speed and start to gain on you. Again, I'm not sure on this, but I've noticed it happening several times so it seems plausible. Lastly, as someone who plays exclusively on PC with the keyboard I'll say that you get used to it eventually, but it takes some time. I even managed to get the infamous Magazine 22 playing that way so don't feel discouraged if it seems rough at first.
definitely use a contoller next time and try to hold on to the MX-5 as long a possible, cuz that car is what makes this challenge doable. The other starters will be eventually outclassed by the better cars like Eclipse, Skyline, 350z, s2000, RX-7, but the MX-5 can rival them

Very fun concept of a nuzlocke for underground if you get past event 16 next time it’s a big win.
After completing the entire career of this game I think I can definitely relate to your pains about the rubber banding and traffic, shit was painful
