By that time Rafi was back into the reckoning. Note 'Kya hua Tera Vada' His death in 1980 left the field clear for Kishore. But melody was dead by then .........

sorry for typo errors. Kishore is a good singer alright but he needed a phenomenon- Rajesh K to give him a boost. After the sun set on the Phenomenon, Kishore sang on his own merit. By that time Rafi was back into the reckoning. Note 'Kya hua Tera Vada' His death in 1980 left the field clear for Kishore. But melody was dead by then .........

Rafi Sahabh Favourite song is Suhaani Raath Dal Chukhi Na Jaane Thum Kab Aawogi , What A song He chose , Which Puts A Question In every ones mind Aisa Mahaa Kalakar Kab Aaayegi Phir Is Dhuniya Me . I Personally Feel That More than his voice which can never be replaced for 1000 years , The Gentleman Quality inside him can never be seen in an Human being till the end of This Kali Yuga , So Humble , So Simple , So Accommodative to All Music Directors , In spite of having had such a great singer to give so many hits O.P. Nayyar Sahabh Took him to task for arriving late for a recording & inspite of profound appology from Rafi Sahabh that he was delayed at A Shankar - Jaikishan Recording , Nayyar Sahabh Dropped him like a hot potato & went for Mahendhra Kapoor & Kishore Kumar . Later Nayyar Sahabh Regrets I did the Biggest blunder of my life in Taking Rafi Sahabh to task . Could any one treat such a sincere human being Like that , Lataji & Nayyar Sabh However Great they may be they did not have even 5 percent of Rafi Sahabh magnanimity all through their LIfe , Rafi sahabh from Day one to day last felt he was only an extension of God's Blessing & He on his own was nothing

The Reason For Rafi Sahabh Faultless Singing is That Rafi Sahabh A Child Of All Gods sang from his heart & through the purity of his soul , Not one song he sang for Money being the reason For the last ever song recorded by Naushad Rafi Sahab Cried Like a child & refused to take money saying that the pleasure he got for by singing , money never can give him , After Madhubhna Me Radhika was recorded for Kohinoor Producer wanted Naushad to drop that song , Naushad with Rafi Sahabh & Dilip Kumar ji had spent 1 year in planning & recording sank to his knees & told Rafi Sahab The happenning Rafi Sahab went to the Producer & told them if Audience reject this song I shall not take a pie for it But please reatain it , One need not have to tell about the All time hit of Madhubhan Me Radhika, Producer head down came to Rafi Sahabh to pay the money as the knew how Kohinoor gave them money through that song Rafi Sahabh simply told them , Audience Have payed me money I do not want any money from you , Such A dedicated soul he was , When Lakshmi Kant Pyarelal recorded Chaunga Mai Thuje in Dosti , They had no money to Pay Rafi Sahab - Rafi For Accounts Book reason took just Re 1 from them , Every song of his is a golden treasure for another million years

Thank you for stating these facts. Parochialism & animosity towards Muslims did play a heavy role . I am afraid it persists till date. S.D.Burman ( R.D.Burman is his son) is from Tripura but settled down in Kolkata ( Calcutta). He was one blind mulish worshipper of Lata Mangeshkar . Finally Asha Bhonsle's " Raath Akeli Hai" in Jewel Thief composed by him did convince him to praise her somewhat. S.D.Burman was dismissive towards Md.Rafi also to start with. Mohd Rafi's songs in 'Pyaasa' of Guru Dutt composed by s.d.burman dented his hauteur somewhat. Nevertheless he continued to favour bengali speaking Kishore Kumar.
Times were changing then. Many youngsters men & women ( boys & girls) preferred devouring gruff macho songs & voice of kishore kumar. Bengalis are notorious for unbridled VIOLENCE should anyone say anything unfavourable about their 'Icon' kishore kumar & r.d.burman . Entire song filled with nothing but his yodellings sent them to ecstasy . No wonder today I read a pair of tambram lovers NRIs from America had their formal wedding in Chennai. The bride decided to wear traditional silk saree , flowers in hair etc spitting " tradition is hipster today" . During reception she grabbed the mike & belted out heavy metal music songs & her husband was blasting away at the drums. Rest of the senior citizens gathered too enjoyed it seems. 'Samay ke saath chalo' expedient philosophy is trendy. In Gujarat one hindu youngistan woman appeared for her wedding riding Hero Honda motorcycle approved wholeheartedly by her parents & offered to take her Groom for a ride.
Listen to Mohammad Rafi's Lullaby ' Main Gaoon Thum So Jhaao" One full of pathos & the other normal. Another Lullaby " Nanhe Baba Re Soja' in Koshish of Gulzar picturised on Om Shivpuri. Even today these lullabies of Md Rafi can soothe troubled minds ensuring peaceful slumber.

When amar akbar antony was released all over Calcutta one would have assumed amitabh bachhan being the 'soooperstar' & kishore kumar 's songs would have hogged the limelight. Not in the least. Lots of Tamilians ( mostly Tamilian Brahmins & certain others ) all school & college students who were routinely holding singing competitions / contests selected ONLY Mohammad Rafi's 'Purdah hai Purdah" to sing & win the prize or to be voted the best. It is indeed revelatory that most of us NEVER harboured animosity towards Urdu , Islam -Muslims & were least awestruck at the actors & actresses on celluloid except Md.Rafi Md.Rafi & none other than Md.Rafi. Many did not know hindi but memorized the song. When the judge said the same song cannot be sung by all they refused insisting they would sing only this song Purdah hai Purdah. Apropos the Dastak song . you have echoed my thoughts. Ditto for Md.Rafi & Lata's duet composed by Madan Mohan ' Meri Duniya Mein" ( Priya Rajvansh & R)in Heer Ranjah. Md Rafi's solo in the same movie ' Ye Duniya Ye Mehfil' is also unforgettable. And chosen by wannabe singers to flaunt their prowess. I am totally in concurrence with what you have written.
Interestingly TMS told me once in a public performance hosted for a select audience of Muslims with women in Purdah seated separately & men on the other side when he sang the well known " Ellorum Kondaaduvom"....Allahvin Peyarai." from 'Paava Mannippu' the womenfolk completely clad in Purdah automatically swayed & responded by accompanying the rhythmic beat bringing their two hands together. Men did NOT object.
