  • Atari® - one of the world's most iconic consumer brands and interactive entertainment producers - announced today it has purchased the Intellivision brand and certain games from Intellivision Entertainment LLC. Atari will seek to expand digital and physical distribution of legacy Intellivision games, potentially create new games, and explore brand and licensing opportunities as part of a long-term plan to create value from the Intellivision properties.

I was also an Atari kid growing up. I'm less familiar with Intellivision though I've owned a few products over the years like Intelivision Lives! They could definitely do an Atari 50 style game, as Intellivision Lives is basically that. I can't think of any break out games for aRecharged treatment though. The Atari fan base dwarfs Intellivision and Colecovision. They both died with the video game crash, while Atari continued sales of the 2600 until after the SNES came out. It would be great to see an Intellivision collection, but I see a lot of value in the IP beyond that.

Nobody had a ******Vision. Except my friend who had a sleepover around 7th/8th grade and we played Cloudy Mountain. And I had a Colecovision. But that’s it!
The nice thing about the 2600 was swapping games for a few days with your friends.
I alone had the 5200 it seemed. So before 8bit computing and floppy drives took over from consoles in those weird puberty transition years I was alone in the post-2600 scene and so I wound up playing with myself.

It will be difficult to port some Intellivision titles due to the specialized controllers. Space Spartans, B-17 Bomber, Night Stalker, Tron Deadly Discs, Sea Battle, the DND titles are some I can think of that made heavy use of the controller keyboards. Wikipedia lists about 120 total and almost half are third-party or licensed titles that IE would have no rights to. I'm going to guess the odd phrasing of "over 200 games AND THE TRADEMARKS" is a bit of double counting. I.e. "we give you the the ROM and the name" (and that counts as 2). Even then, I think they're lumping in the M-Network titles they already had to get to that suspiciously large, round "200". Plus BBG already bought all the "valuable" Amico updates leaving a lot of flotsam and jetsam. If "Atari*" wants to impress, get the Imagic and Activision titles licensed since those were the best titles on the system.

A lot of people don’t know it but Intellivision included the work of The Blue Sky Rangers, the core developers of M.E. software. This in turn could also include both the licensed and original works of Realtime Associates, which includes Bug, an old Saturn game, forgotten even by Sega, the ones who published it.
They also have the NES ports and sequels of Intellivision games made for some plug and play consoles back in the early 2000.
I don’t think those numbers are inflated, they did a lot, it’s just not as popular.

@@OM19_MO79 "Could" is the operative word. Companies like Sega don't just let IPs (particularly a multi-game one) go for free. Forgotten and neglected? Sure. But given away for free? No way. See all EA "neglected" IPs that the second someone tries to make a fan game with the real name they are suddenly flooded with letters from lawyers. "Atari"* is not above hyperbole. I want to see a concrete list rather than "over 200 titles". Look at the dozen+ Stern titles they bought yet all they used were Berzerk (and Frenzy as 'also included'). Don't you think if that deal included something like Bug!, they would have touted it? No reason not to because most are speculating this is at MOST a six figure deal. Also, if TT had access to anything like Bug!, he would have been crowing about it for YEARS as a possible Amico title rather than the endless "I talked to a guy I know at X and they were interested" that never went anywhere.

How about an Intellivision+ in the form factor of the Intellivision II with the intellivoice module built in. Update the controllers and move away from the membranes and stiff buttons and add a stick to the disc.

    • @nickpalance3622
      @nickpalance3622 4 месяца назад +1

In the back pages of then-current gaming magazines there were ads for stick-on sticks.
I picked up a Sears Tele-Games Super Video Arcade (whew! 😓) better known as their version of the Intellivision (and it looked unique unlike the TandyVision which I also have) and it came with sticks stuck on the controllers. My other Sears Intellivision (in box) has stock controllers.
But what would be great would be the Wico Command Control joystick 🕹️ for the Intellivision. Looks just like the Colecovision version. But you had to do surgery to get the wires out of the stock controller and attach them into the Wico.

    Hey, we're better together.
At the very least Intellivision will be getting more publicity.

I just hope it means the future of retro gaming will no longer be dominated by all those Nintendo game boys.

Maybe with a new firmware upgrade or a new version of GameStation Pro, Atari will incorporate Intellivision games. Maybe we'll even get Intellivision controllers. I'm thinking more and more about buying a GameStation Pro and getting back into vintage games. Maybe after my hand heals up from arthritis surgery, I'll take the plunge. Having Intellivision inclusion would be a major incentive. Never owned the system, but I always liked the look of it in TV commercials.

The GSP is still a good value - especially now that it's going for $50 on sale pretty regularly. But I wouldn't expect to see Intellivision titles coming out for that platform. Remember that the GSP is made by My Arcade under license from Atari, so adding any new games they've acquired since last year would be a new licensing agreement for what is now a year-old plug-and -play. Like you, I am hopeful to see some INTV offerings from Atari in the near future, though.

Thought you were gonna say, “Got myself a gun,” straight away, in the intro. 😅 Atari sold more 2600s than Mattel sold Intellivisions, by the time Intellivision were released, in 1979. Atari outsold Intellivision 10/1 - or should I say 30 million to 3 million...

Actually, I lied- that was the second thing. The first thing was "when is Jon's video about this coming?" And, well, here we go!😄

Meh, if you have an Ataribox with a Windows 10 copy, just emulate all the Intellivision games. They work great and even the Ataribox doesn't break the bank if you want an emulation beast. I have the original Intellivision I w/box and about 110 games. Also an unboxed Intellivision II with ECS Computer, Voice Synth, and Atari 2600 System Changer. Great system for the time!! But hard to keep running, especially the "disc" controllers as they are wired in on Intellivision I, and changeable on Intellivision II.

    • @GenXGrownUp

Our ability to emulate has no bearing on this. This is about who now owns the rights to the IP and can legally distribute and iterate on those titles.
