  • Welcome to the first part of the settlement series! We're going to try and help out those fine folks we got moved into Sanctuary Hills. Gotta take care of our new neighbors. ;)
This video has minimal editing because I approached it the way I tend to approach normal videos so please by aware that editing style may change through-out this series.
Also I have included midroll ads here, which I try not to do to normal videos, but long videos like that that are optional-viewing are not going to do me much good so I'm just trying to compensate for that, hope you don't mind too much & thanks for understanding.
This is the Game of the Year Edition and we will be doing as much of the DLC as possible. My gameplay is unmodded with the exception of a few stability improving mods. Those are:
    Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch v2.1.3
    Previsibines Repair Pack v0.53
    River Fix v1.1
    LoadAccelerator v1.8
The extremely copyrighted radio music has been removed because fun is illegal. If any other changes are made to the game throughout the series I'll announce them, but that's all for now.
    Keep in touch with me!

18:10 the "settings" wheel above the bed is actually a vault door symbol. Objects in the build menu that were added by DLC will bear a symbol representing the DLC they came from. The vault door means it came with vault tec workshop. A boat icon, from Far harbor. Etc.

Building something takes more resources than you get back from scrapping. It's much more efficient to store or move something if you intend to use it in the future, otherwise you can end up wasting resources like copper.
The collapsed houses cannot be fixed, but scrapping them will leave behind a flat concrete slab that's useful for building new structures.

Just to answer your question at the start you indeed don't need to worry about scrapping a container if it's got something in it. The contents of it will get put into your workshop. There are a few locked safes and suitcases in Sanctuary that I guess you'd lose the XP on unlocking them but it's not really a whole bunch to be losing.

Congratulations! You discovered the rug glitch. If you place something on top of a rug you can move whatever it is. If you hold longer on the rug it will pick up items nearby. You can use this to move entire buildings.
There are similar glitches with slightly different effects with the pillar, pole, and campfire.
Also, store the televisions in Sanctuary before recruiting settlers. There's a bug that sometimes counts TVs as settlers.

The building system really can be frustrating without the Place Everywhere mod. That completely eliminates the red outline, lets you turn off snapping, sink stuff into the ground, etc. But there is a certain satisfaction that comes with doing it modless though, knowing that your frustration paid off lol. Also, the gear icon next to the bed in the menu means it came from the Vault-Tec Workshop DLC. The other icons that you'll see are a boat (Far Harbor), wrench (Contraptions Workshop), deathclaw head (Wasteland Workshop), robot head (Automatron), and Nuka-Cola bottle (Nuka-World).

Scrap Everything can be pretty frustrating, too, though in that everything but the kitchen sink, including invisible idle markers, has been added to the list of things you can scrap. If you ignore the attack message or don't make it to the settlement in time, there is a chance that the settlers will fail to defend themselves. If that happens, things such as generators can be damaged next time you visit the settlement.
There is also a special type of settlement mission, where a generator is broken and the settlers ask you to fix it... usually while the settlement gets attacked. I've only had that happen twice in all my playthroughs, though.

The rugs move anything you've set on it, but not things that were already on them. When you placed the bed inside your house on that rug it attached the bed to the rug so that you could move them both together. It's the same reason the wall moved with the floor when you place them inside the house. It is not a bug, but a feature. It allows you to easily relocate something you've built if you find you started in the wrong place.
EDIT:. I think that now that you have most of the settlement system learning curve behind you that future episodes will be shorter/smoother.

Plenty of people doing settlement builds.
I think the problem it that it wasn't extensive enough AND it was tied to an RPG. Most people play RPGs to build characters not settlements.
I always found it a bit tedious and my settlements were just higgledy piggledy with beds and a roof over their heads and food/water.
With the DLC it made it easier to build better looking houses like Far Harbour barn/warehouses, but the inability to remove some of the existing features in a space, (that shack at Two Pines(?)) plus the edges of the build area gets annoying. Then the NPCs might refuse to use the stairs or walkway for some reason.
Really needs a behaviour mod so your settlers man their posts and don't run outside the settlement to fight.

    Yeah... the ceiling situation...
Those Sanctuary roofs and ceilings are actually what got me into modding the game at first. I don't mind the concept of having to fix stuff like that; it's fairly realistic. However, doing so is nigh on impossible because Bethesda just didn't provide the necessary pieces. It's even difficult to jury-rig something together. Now.. I just use lore-friendly, pre-fixed settlement mods. I love the design and decorating aspects of building, it's a creative outlet and very relaxing... but those roofs are painfully tedious. :D
Anyway, I'm really enjoying this, and your sunny approach/sense of humour as you figure things out... This episode brightens my evening wonderfully, thank you!
One tip on the ceilings, btw, I don't know if you can do this without Place Everywhere (I think so), but you can actually use the square wooden floor pieces to patch them.

Your game is early AND you haven't been collecting resources as thoroughly as you could have been. Now you know. Spend some time gathering resources and then build something small. You didn't need two giant purifiers. One little one or two water pumps that don't even need power are perfect for a tiny little starter settlement like yours. Same with your food; you planted more than you need right now. No problem, you'll grow into that. But for now, your game is still very, very young and your resources are, quite literally, less than 1 percent of what you'll need. So make your next project small and simple. For example, set up a starter community at Red Rocket or Sunshine Co-op and see how you can make the smallest amount of construction meet their needs. So take it slow. Don't try to do everything at once. Don't try to build a city when a house will do. Don't try to build a mansion when a shack will do. And for Shaun's sake, collect resources! Have fun :)

Yeah there is a LOT undocumented about the Settlement building system. I went through a lot of trial or error. You can go super-simple using the prefabs or go to building your own complex structures. I mean you can even set up automated factory lines that converts everything you put into a container into scrap or make a particular type of ammo, etc.
Some tips: To deal with uneven terrain you can put down foundations to create a level structure to build on. When it comes to defense, enemies will attack from a few specific points around your communities - there are resources online which point out exactly where so you can plan your defense accordingly. Scrapping excess weapons and armor can yield a lot of building materials. Most locations and containers also "reset" after a certain amount of time - so if you find a place with a lot of a certain resource you can occasionally hit the place for scrap.

12 min in I feel so bad for Her. having done a lot of settlement stuff without mods I will say a lot of stuff like fences are easier if you scrap them all and rebuild the whole thing. Fences in perticular you want to set one or 2 "Pin" posts first then fill in afterward.
Edit: not really a spoiler but to be safe. I have another fence comment below.
I forgot you need to find a magazine to make certain fence types.

Think of the work benches in each settlement as a version of the vending machines at the SIERRA MADRE; you dump in your junk items, and if turns it into the stuff you want; the game doesn't expect you to repair things, it expects you to tear things down and make new things; at first, you won't be able to make anything really fancy; you will have to find magazines with recipes, out in the world; the PLACE ANYWHERE mod will be your best friend, when it comes to settlement building

Top 3 mods for settlement work that cut down on most of the frustration if you ask me:
Place everywhere: Lets you "clip" things through stuff the game won't let you when placing, solving common problems like stuff partially hovering when not placed on perfectly flat ground by letting you place it partially through the ground or what have you. Like the issue you saw with setting down the cooking station and its awkward cinderblock base or the floorboards in the house.
Scrap everything: Lets you scrap things the game won't normally let you, including prefab buildings and bushes/trees/corpses everything else.
OCDecorator: Allows you to place "static" world versions of nearly everything in the game from materials to ammo to premade shelves filled with things for immersion. Really makes a lot of the games random stuff feel more useful as it turns it all into potential decoration. If you just place things on the ground or try to put it on top of something by dropping from your inventory you'll have a whole world of frustration and it also won't stay in one spot.
Honorable mentions: Settlement Supplies Expanded, Homemaker, Thematic and Practical, All Settlements Extended, Architect, Functional Displays
There's also mods that add more wood and metal walls and prefabs to work with if you like those and several to automatically restore the sanctuary bridge and houses for you if you want :)

Place and OCD are awesome, and I wouldn't build without them. However, I VERY STRONGLY urge Missie and anyone else to avoid Scrap Everything like the ABSOLUTE PLAGUE. Further, Place Everywhere actually has a toggle that allow you to scrap certain additional objects safely.

1:12:00 Every settler not assigned a job will scavenge 1 junk object per day and put it in the workbench. A settler assigned to a savaging station will still only scavenge one item, but they roll from a different larger list of items. So less low scrap/value things like tin cans and more things like phones or typewriters

I like that you've done the separate settlement videos, it's a relaxing way to spend an afternoon! In terms of settlement building, the Minutemen are the faction that is most heavily focused in this area. There are other factions you can join later if you choose, but the Minutemen will always remain as an option you can return to if you decide not to stick with anyone else.
As you've discovered, settlement building is very resource intensive. There are multiple ways you can obtain more, but for now, here are some tips.
The dead street lights are a good source of early copper. Rubber can be found from scrapping tires, concrete from the ruined houses and cinderblocks, and ceramic from bathroom fixtures, oil from gas cans, paint cans, cooking oil.
Aluminum is quite rare, so is adhesive. You will need to explore for them more often than not. Adhesive can be farmed and crafted, but it's still too early for that in your playthrough.
There are other options for later on though if you like!
With slightly higher intelligence and the scrapper perk, you can get a fair bit of most crafting materials from scrapping any weapons and armor you scavenge with non-default modifications on them. Otherwise, you can buy shipments from most traders in towns. They are fairly expensive, but weigh nothing, contain a large amount of crafting materials.
Currently, your best bet is to continue being a packrat and grabbing all junk items you can find.
Pack mule eventually makes you able to move and fast travel while over encumbered so you can loot everything, or you can use the inspirational perk in charisma to make Cosworth carry more. The Automatron DLC becomes available at level 15 or so, and after doing a few quests in it you can create and modify robot companions (Codsworth included), and can greatly increase their carrying capacity.
Sorry if that's a lot at once! I'm tying to avoid mentioning anything too spoilery

Mods really improve upon that, there’s the Scrap That Settlement mod that allows you to scrap the static junk and trash piles too. Also, I personally feel that a settlement building series is much more intriguing than a standard play through of the story that most of us have already played a 100 times over. Everyone builds their settlement differently, but everyone usually plays the game the same 2 or 3 different ways. Regardless, as long as you’re having fun, then do what you want. • @mrdabeetle1
    @mrdabeetle1 2 года назад +2

The depth of the post controls the depth of the fence, so pick up the corner post and raise it a bit and the fence will snap so it's not buried in the ground. Walls snap to floors and foundations. Place a foundation and set the depth so buildings don't float in the air. The build system is janky, but once you learn how things work with each other, it becomes much easier. There are lots of mods that fix some of the flaws but they also add things that aren't vanilla, so you might want to wait until you finish your playthru before modding. You can assign settlers to crops and it will produce more that is stored in your workshop. Same for guard towers, stores, that scavenging station, etc.

-Go into the workshop mode, and walk up to the absolutely destroyed house near the "main" house. You can scrap it!! Try it on all the extra destroyed houses!
-I don't know if you're open to mods, but the only way to get the houses looking newish again is via a mod. Poor Sturges will work to no avail otherwise 😔
-You can order your settlers to do lots of different things, one of which is "Supply Line" and it gives you access to the inventory of whatever settlement you send them to.
Lastly, I legit never even thought about putting candles in the windows, what is wrong with me?! I love it!!
