    It sucks that people hate on you for finding rare things. Whenever you post that type of video I always look up almost every record you show and listen to a few songs and see if I like it. It’s led me to music I would’ve never found that I love: T2, Truth and Janey, Sound Company, Moving Gelatin Plates, etc. Haters decide to be jealous instead of sharing the love. What’s the point of having all the grails I want if I can’t listen and be intimately familiar with them. I do try, when I start obsessing on what I need next is to just enjoy what I already have. Agree with you 100% Out of all of the obscure bluesy hard rock bands I've heard, nothing ever beats Ten Years After. Magical Mystery Tour and The Doors is better than 90% of the obscure psych albums I own. Jimi Hendrix too. Tower of Power made incredible funk albums that are better than most of the obscure funk around. I love collecting the obscure stuff and the rush of finding that stuff is why I love hunting! Some obscure stuff also really clicks specifically with you. Where Zeppelin may click with almost everyone, Arzachel clicks with me and is one of my favorites. Bob Dylan clicks with most people but I can really relate to Nick Drake. Its always up to the listener!

    No rare record is worth the asking price for either the music on it or even the artefact itself. This is no reflection on you as a trader/shop owner btw, the market dictates!
    Apart from the bargains we have all found (and I have been collecting for near 50 years), I can't think of anything I have paid a big ticket price for (and that is relative to me and what my budget is) in that time that would come close to my top 20 albums....hell top 200 albums...of all time, again relative to my tastes/what still works for me.
    By accident rather than design I own a lot of rare albums (in the UK in the late 70s you could pick up Vertigo swirls or pink Island issues for next to nothing) but if the Nick Drake I had wanted had been a re issue and not said pink Island version (as one example) I would have bought the re issue (due to my ignorance but it was the music that counted! btw Nick Drakes albums are all in my top 200 but none were high priced even though 2 are first press ).
    I guess being of an age where I have flipped by what are now £1000 albums in bargain bins 45 plus years ago, it clouds my judgement.
    Also, even though it is anathema to many here, I will live happily with the £10-20 cd of a 'grail'...example given Toad by Toad...as the album is beyond the price of my car. And as good as it is, is it worth the ticket price re an original lp??? Nope.
    There is very little that we cannot access these days but I havent heard anything that even remotely would be worth the price....for the music. If it becomes an artefact for 'trade' (again thats not personal against anyone who owns a 2nd hand record business....) then we have all lost touch of what always was supposed to have counted...ie the music.

    Hey Dylan, do you have expectations to grow the collection or do you want to keep it around the same size? I mean, im saying because of your comment that "you gotta have the common records that inspired those bands".
    Unlike you, I dont have many rare records but I have lots and lots of the common ones, say black sabbath, led zep, deep purple, grand funk, ccr, lynyrd, alman bros, pink floyd, genesis, yes, gentle giant, van der graaf, elp, king crimson, and so on. I also have lots of funk, soul, jazz, classical, mostly common stuff like the ones i mentioned.
    In your case, because you have a record store, if you keep all the common stuff and also the rare stuff.. how is it that you avoid having a huge collection that will take a huge space in your house?

  • @arzabael
    @arzabael 7 месяцев назад +3

    Sorry if I’m one of the mean comments you were talking about! I know we are all suppose to just like what we like but I come from an investing background and I can’t not see records with the mindset of value generation, and I know how value is given to something, it takes two people agreeing on its price and a third person to pay it then others to see that happen. Then the value is set. But those people have to stay around and keep interest going, and if theyre all from one generation and they’re getting out of record collecting because they’re getting really old it means a new class of collectors have to come in and acknowledge the value of those fringe niche albums, and I don’t see gen z and gen alpha doing that. Theyre not going to incorporate “farm” into the thrill of the hunt unless someone they look up to says farm is cool, and those people are getting out of the game. The value is temporary, the same way the value of Huey Lewis and Robert Palmer is going down because the amount of fans that like them are lessening, because they’re not around anymore and all the people who use to talk about them don’t talk about them anymore. While records like prince and Bowie will have guaranteed value for another 50 years because all the people living today who still know and think about them. When it comes to the value of records aside from your own enjoyment from listening to them, it’s exactly like that quote they say about nothing really does until the last person to remember it dies. So I really hope a renaissance happens for prog psych and garage, the kind that reinvigorates the value. Personally I don’t like really long or weird songs I can barely handle Pink Floyd yea I know I’m getting g worse by the second here but these things I am saying, are not completely idiotic. Just saying.

      If you have a mindset of value generation I am a little surprised you are interested in vinyl records at all! Even at the extremes of collectibility these are not really high value items, let’s be honest. The most valuable records in the world (bar a few outliers) are worth a lot less than the cheapest new car you could buy. Hopefully the music brings you some rewards as well!

You’re right that won’t buy me a new car but I think several collections of full discographies in near mint are worth getting serious about like a Beatles one a Rolling Stones one a Led Zeppelin one or a ..Pink Floyd one. The former is a $50 record and the latter is a $200 record. I got sweet deals for both of them. What I've always told people, "Holy Grail is only significant if you actually like it!" I used to get so annoyed of people that would tell me, "OMG..you have to own this/that album!" My reply would be, "why, I don't like that artist/band, why would I buy an album of theirs?" Owning an album just to "own an album" to me is the most ridiculous thing ever!? I don't own one album by Steely Dan, I never cared for them. They bore me to death! I understand their significance and influence, and if they're your thing, grab every album they made. But I do not feel the need to own an "original copy of Aja bc someone else tells me how awesome it is!" What I get off on is finding a "rare " album to me, that is listed for like $10, bc it was a band/artist that I really liked, but they weren't hugely successful, most people didn't listen to it/know about it, so if you find a copy of it, it's usually in a discount bin! Love your videos..keep up the great work!

    I think that ultimately it just comes down to the music. Yeah, while owning a Beatles butcher cover album or a Led Zep teal lettering cover is cool, all of that stuff is not going to change what comes out of the speakers when the needle hits the groove. Still the same songs.
    As far as obscure ultra-rare albums go, a whole lot of them just aren’t that great musically. There is a reason for their obscurity. On the other hand, some didn’t catch on at the time but were actually good or great and grew followings later because of that. But once again, that’s due to the musical content rather than anything else.
    I love hunting down obscure 60’s garage band music. There is a lot of sound-alike junk, but there is also a lot of amazing stuff that didn’t get its day in the sun the first time around. It just depends on the music.

Two that stick in my mind are "Arcadium's" "Breath Awhile" on Middle Earth and a Copy of "Pussy" on Morgan BlueTown back in the late 90's after hours of rummaging through a room of boxes where I was told that I would probably find something that I liked in there.

I am 100% on board with having original pressings and the thrill of having them, but on a budget, I usually go for the cheaper repress and just assume my ears won't know the difference. My hesitation with the represses is that you never know how the mix was done and I'm pretty sure more than a couple that I've bought are just rips from a crappy FLAC file or digital version pressed onto vinyl.

    Interested to know your thoughts on a phenomenon I’ve noticed on Discogs: rare (but not super rare) records - maybe ones where there’s 5-10 copies for sales max around the world, and every copy is priced at double or more what anyone has ever paid before. You mention it in here, and it grabbed my attention because it drives me crazy. All these sellers thinking they can price at twice what anyone has ever paid and then, often, I see those records just sit, and sit, and sit for months and months not selling. Its infuriating all these sellers seemingly trying to rip people off, and simultaneously denying themselves the actual sale they’d get if they priced more reasonably.

    This kind of coincides with something I always think about. People love to hate popular bands. It's because those bands and songs have been so pervasive throughout the years. But that shouldn't negate the fact that they are great bands and great songs. The Eagles, being one example, get a lot of hate and I understand that they were well produced and maybe a little overproduced. But if you were to listen to the songs with an open mind, if an unknown band had made those songs and were recently being discovered, they would be touted as an underrated lost treasure.

    • @vinylmandate
      @vinylmandate 7 месяцев назад

      The hate could also be directed at Don Henley for being a complete ass about the "fair use" (a legal designation) of Eagles songs, going so far as to personally submitting take down orders for even a couple seconds of an Eagles song on YT. He is why if you've ever tried to sing an Eagles song at Karaoke night the versions available are not made by the main companies that produce the licensed karaoke versions (and do a damn god job since they have in house musicians record the tracks so they sound exactly like the originals but without the lead vocals). If they do have any it's some bootleg unlicensed version that sucks. And there was that tine when police were called to his house by a naked 16 yo girl who overdosed on qualudes and cocaine along with a 15 yo girl also taking (being given?) drugs. So there are many reasons to hate anything with Henley's stink on it other than the Eagles popularity.

In the 90s the market wasn’t flooded with reissues so often the “original” pressings were your only option. Thankfully they weren’t so expensive as they are now but were trickier to find before the dawn of eBay and discogs. Anyway I’ve made lots of money over the years on grails I’ve found cheaply in the wild so I don’t mind if I drop 4 figures on a really nice clean Blue Note once in awhile. But I don’t do it very often!

Your videos remind me of the talks with my bro. Keep it up.

    Great video. I can't tell you the amount of times I have been researching rare records and end up thinking, this is pretty cool, but it just makes me want to listen to the real deal.
    Like with all of those 70's hard rock raritties, I dig them, but eventually I just want to hear Black Sabbath.
    Luckily I am a sucker for a $5 new wave record, so I spend a lot of time getting my cheese on with stuff that sounds like it should be on the soundtrack for an 80's ski competition movie.

    Like any hobby, so much of the fun is the journey. My dad was a car guy and constantly fixing up cars, selling a new project. I’ve bought & sold so many guitars over the years because I can’t help but find them. If I kept them all my house would be full and my wife would leave! Keep on liking what you like and enjoy the journey.

    I kind of have this philosophy even for reissues of my most wanted records.
    To me, a quality reissue at $700 to 800 less would probably be a good deal to me because the originals are dang near impossible to find. But it's the thrill of the hunt to find one mispriced in storage or hiding in a stack of $1 records.

That said, I did spend too much time/money in the past just buying something because I liked the cover or (more stupidly) I recognised a few of the musicians in the credits. Much of it crap! I now try to be less of a whimsical buyer and stick to a 'want list'. Trouble is, much of it IS expensive!😢

      100% agree. First presses do tend to sound better, people have cottoned onto this. A lot of records were not pressed in large quantities and masters were lost early so subsequent represses just aren’t as good. Some of the classics are getting rarer and rarer to find in good condition which increases the collectibility further.

    9:47 - Woah! I was just thinking of this one, on something you said about the previous one. Last time I heard of a copy going for a crazy amount was $500 for the exact same 1st pressing. And i would hope that is in close to mint condition as it gets. Maybe because they are the local band. But i have wondered if geography comes down to it. Sure, it may be a rare record here. But is it that rare in Sydney, Australia? And would it be in some dollar bin in decent enough shape there. Which brings up, which version is rare? The original Fonthill pressing. Or the reissued version on London Records that has the different album cover and the re-recording of Rock Star / Flaggit (this is also the same recordings on the single)
    But I guess what I am getting at is maybe just a thing that happens here. But sometimes I wonder just how the store works here. Seems like anything rare you shown, would be in the dollar bins. Because no one cares about "obscure album title here" and no one is gonna buy that. But they will definitely buy the white album of the white album. So it's all down to titles. Something I always wanted to do was walk in with 5 or 10 records that are worth 1000's and see what they would say. Probably get anywhere from $5 to $10. Because no one wants or knows "title" and goes right into the cheap bins. Just because its not some big name title.

  • @njwtube
    @njwtube 7 месяцев назад

    This is a great idea , however I think you would have been better off comparing the same record. E.g. an original Vertigo Swirl Black Sabbath press Vs the newest repress from 2020s. Often times, you would need the best copy of the original for it to sound better than the repress or an insane sound system to actually notice the difference. It's easy to pick a favourite out of two if one is more expensive and rare, but do rare expensive records actually sound better ? I think if you did that it may help many to realize it's just purely for the love that you buy crazy expensive stuff

    • @markquinones2889
      @markquinones2889 7 месяцев назад

      Yes, for most of us high-end vinyl collectors, the reason why the original first presses are the most desirable is because of investment purposes. Also, these records are cut directly from the master tapes which sound better on an expensive stereo system and most of them hold or increase in value over time. I'm lucky to know alot of the high-end dealers and fortunate enough to have the financial resources to continue this hobby at the depth that Dillion is at. I plan to eventually write a book detailing (with pictures) all these rare and obscure artifacts that I've accumulated during the last 46 years. In the end, this will help the vinyl community learn more about these gems for those who want to dive deeper.

    How did you get an original copy of Population II without the cut-out hole? Did you get that direct from Randy Holden himself or were there other sources? I have seen an original Population II at a record show once, but it had a cut-out hole & I was told all surviving copies had cut-out holes, because the record came out when the Hobbit record label that issued it completely collapsed financially.

    The thrill of the hunt is very real. Flipping through records and having a record you have been dreaming of "staring back at you" is one of the greatest feelings I know.
    That Armageddon album is great. I also have a clean promo that I know I paid less than $50 for. One of the last things Keith Relf did.
    There are many big-dollar albums I want. But I also love going through the bargain bins to find those "lost gems" that continue to go overlooked. Albums I myself am unfamiliar with, but that look promising. And usually they are deservedly forgotten, but every once in a while you find an album that makes you ask, "How did THESE GUYS not make it?"

    I don’t think you are flexing your collection at all. It’s just the stuff the drives you to find more unique groups and artists. I like to come across an album and artist I have no clue who it is. Sample it and go wow I think I’ll take a shot at this one. Many new artists I found were in $1 bins or thrift store finds. I’m drawn to interesting album covers and have hit on some really cool stuff that way. Some of my favorite finds are not exactly the best overall sounding vinyl record. But it’s mine and I’m happy to have cause I found something during the hunt that I never knew was out there.

    Been watching a long time now and been wondering if you have "common" hard rock albums in your collection like Starz,Legs Diamond,Piper,Airborne,Angel,etc. Never have heard you mention them but they kick as much ass (or more) than some of the rare stuff. What I've also found through the years is that many of the "grails" are highly over hyped. Many of the ones I mentioned actually kick their asses.

    Great topic Dillon, I really enjoyed this. UK Vertigo swirl records for example are usually very expensive as not that many were sold at the time. Why? Most of the bands on that label were actually not very good imo. I also did the 'chasing rare expensive records' trip but then when you actually listen to them you think... are they worth that? Of course they are! 😊

    Thanks for the great video. Very, very well said. I love seeing other people get excited about finding a rare record or others get excited about finding a record with music they love. I hope you keep sharing your great finds. I've learned so much about music I've never heard of before from you.
    "better" is such a subjective term. People buy records for different reasons. For some, it's about the music and only the music. So if that's you're perspective then the Allman Brothers record is "better" than the Farm record like you said. But, this is also a collecting hobby as well. Is a 1922 George Washington 1c stamp (worth $16,000) "better" than a current Forever stamp you can buy at the post office for $0.68 today? If you're trying to mail a letter then no, it's not. But if you are a collector then yes it is to that collector. I wish that others wouldn't demean people who value things for different reasons.

    I like how you place a lot of these rare records in the context of the major bands of their era & genre that they were trying to emulate. It's the same way with rare garage 45s. There are a lot of bands trying to be the next version of the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, the Animals, the Yardbirds etc. etc., but even when they're imitative, they can't always imitate it perfectly & that's where the individuality creeps in.

    I thought you'd get more into the originals vs reissues debate, which is really more important for most collector's out there. Rarity vs sound quality vs affordability is really what we are all juggling.
