Tornados? Hurricanes? What Do You Do In Severe Weather? - Confessions of a Theme Park Worker

  • It's not just raining, there's a ton of lighting, threats of tornados. Or a hurricane is coming. What do you do? Are there plans in place? What procedures do you follow? (and yes, this is a bit late due to some of that weather hitting at home last night)
A behind the scenes look at what a former worker at Disney World, Silver Dollar City, and Busch Gardens Florida experienced in his time working at the parks. From driving large safari trucks around live wild animals while cracking one silly joke after another, to spending 5 years as a #PhotoPass photographer at #WaltDisneyWorld and seeing and experiencing all sorts of things, to being a conductor and #trainrobber on the famous Frisco Silver Dollar Line at #SilverDollarCity. With 10 years of working in the parks, there's lots of stories to tell. Here is some of them...
Not only did I work in theme parks for 10 years, I've visited a whole lot of them as well. Here's some stories of great visits, not so great visits, favorites, reviews, and much more.

I will never forget the time I was at SDC during a tornado warning. Talk about craziness. It did not help that I was mere FEET away from the park’s storm siren. Ouch.

You can't fool me... Disney controls the weather so they could turn it off, if they wanted to 🙂

3 hurricanes in a year. The cleanup from that didn't just suck, it MEGA sucked, and NOT just in the parks!

Wondering what contingency Disneyland and other California parks are doing…we had the equivalent of hurricane force storms the last two years, plus some funnel clouds and level 1 tornados hit. Thanks for the video!

a tornado narrowly missed cedar point back in 1998. a waterspout( one of 3 seen from the park that same day) came off of lake erie and actually passed over the causeway to the park. there's footage of it uploaded on youtube.

and also, according to a news story(also on youtube) the ride operator for power tower apparently ran and left guests stuck on the ride. other guests had pull open the ride restraints to let them out.

I remember when working in Disney one night on my day off there was a funnel cloud above Epcot. That was scary and my parents were scared for me too. Then I experienced hurricane I think Ian a few years ago that hit Disney when working there. Luckily I had a family friend who’s house I was able to evacuate to nearby but it’s scary they shut down Disney for that 2 days. I got paid because I was supposed to work that day and a hurricane happened the night before when I was working was scary though. People don’t follow instructions and it makes it difficult for caste members I had to manage 3 positions at once night before the hurricane and that’s why I’m scared of the rain a bit.

Anybody who refuses to listen to the people that work at the park who are trying to keep them from, you know, not joining the ranks of the Living Impaired, during a weather event should be awarded a pin.
The pin should proudly proclaim said nitwit as "Future Darwin Award Recipient."
I might be crazy, but i do try to be helpful.😁

In the theoretical scenario that a freak storm came through at SDC while the train was out, what would the plan(s) be. We had a freak downpour at the park I work at and was driving the train through it back to the station before we shutdown for the duration of the precipitation

Asked this before and you said you would put it in a future video. I have feeling this was the video you would have put it in. For hurricanes I know the monorails go to roundhouse and the Contemporary. All "normal" boats go to the places like the backstage marinas. Jungle cruise boats go to their maintenance track. What do they do with the paddle wheel since it is on a track? Just tie it as good as they can to the dock?

A couple of possibilities, depending on circumstances.
It can be tied down to the dock in Liberty Square.
I believe (not positive) that there is also a maintenance docking area, similar to a dry dock, on one side of the Rivers of America that they can also use.
Or- if there's time and ability- they can move it to the resort maintenance area like they did in this video www.themeparkinsider.com/flume/202102/8003/

😉 There's a shelter in the old location of the cave, before they moved it. 😅
