On June 26, 2019, the Santa Fe Southern Railway ran a charter from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to Lamy. Five miles short of its destination, SFSR 93 suffered an engine failure. For a considerable time, it rested near the crossing of Avenida Eldorado south of Santa Fe, before an engine from the New Mexico Railrunner rescued it along with its four cars, and moved it to Lamy. Through the efforts of a talented mechanic, parts from 93 were put on 07, the other SFSF locomotive, to make it operational.
The Santa Fe Southern Railway is a short line railroad that operates from Santa Fe to Lamy, New Mexico, a distance of 18.1 miles. The SFSR began operations in 1992, after the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway ended operations on their Lamy to Santa Fe line and a group of local businesspeople purchased the track to continue freight service in the area. Passenger service was added later on.
The railroad is currently owned by Karl Ziebarth, an independent transportation consultant. He had operated the railway with excursion trains for tourists between Lamy and Santa Fe until operations ceased in 2013. At the time service was halted after some 20 years, he told The Santa Fe New Mexican, a local newspaper, that money was the issue.
The railway currently has no scheduled service and operates on a charter basis. Ziebarth says, “We are trying to develop that and hope to be doing that fairly often in the summer months.”
Totally Wonderful ❤️❣️❤️! Merry Christmas to you dear new friend! Thanks for sharing! So glad for all your info and that everyone got to Lamy safely! Great team of RR workers! Enchanting experience! That dining car used to be a Mighty Fine restraunt!
Thank you, Merri! That dining car at Lamy will become part of the Legal Tender soon.
The trains back up and newly painted!
Yes it is and will run it's first excursion December 3. We'll be there to catch it!
Okay! Can't wait to see!!
GP-16? A EMD 567 engine most likely; roots blower most likely (didn't hear a turbo spin up) ... Bloomberg trucks? This is classic railroading. I salute these folks for trying to keep this history running. Good catch sir.
Thank you!
Built as a GP7 in 1952, rebuilt as an EMD GP16. These guys do a great job with limited resources. Hopefully someone with deep pockets buys it. With all that's going on in Lamy, the SFS has a lot of potential.
567 with 645 power assemblies
Love the kettle moraine combine in the consist. Ex DLW Boonton car built in July 1914. Almost 110 years old and still going strong
C'mon SFSR! At least update social media (which is free) to let the world you guys still exist!
Work is being done on 07 and three of the passenger cars to return them to service. Assuming the pandemic recedes soon, you will see it running this summer.
Excellent video Tom.
Thank you, Hans!
great video yard limit :)
Thank you!
Looking forward to you catching the crane action when they go to transfer the trucks Tom.
I didn't see that, but it did happen the next day.
Awesome video!
Thank you!
Pretty nice train. I really like the station.
Thanks Mark!
Yard Limit you’re welcome
Would you have been able to talk to the BNSF guys in Seattle like this? Seems like New Mexico is a completely different world to Seattle. Great video.
Lamy is a special place. Since Amtrak stopped staffing it and the caretakers took over, I've made it a point to get to know them. They are great people. The Santa Fe Southern is based in Lamy so it isn't a problem to wander around as long as you stay within the boundaries of the platform and off the mainline. I met this mechanic in the place where the engine died and he's very open and willing to chat. He has no problem telling anyone interested what's going on and what he's working on.
Along the Amtrak route and BNSF Southern Transcon it's a different story. Trespassers get reported all the time and get hit occasionally. It's a real problem.
Since I moved back here I've met a number of Amtrak and BNSF crew members, many of whom are avid photographers themselves. I've learned a lot from them, including places to avoid and good spots to shoot from. And of course the occasional heads up.
I thought that the Santa Fe Southern railway was closed.
nope its still runs on weekends
Check out the video and the description.
I thought this was Kansas...?
Why?
Money was an issue? I thought the City of Santa Fe shut them out of the station building. They should have tried to get the Budweiser distributor to return to rail.
The Santa Fe Southern is now based out of Lamy which works pretty well for everyone.
I believe I read today Game Of Thrones Author George RR Martin donated quite a bit of money to help!
Not exactly correct. He, along with several others have purchased the Santa Fe Southern. www.businessinsider.com/game-of-thrones-george-rr-martin-buys-santa-fe-railroad-2020-5?fbclid=IwAR2PtmPFtedx5_va3nuOYsREkX-C7TWroeRv1eK7yUUHpQCqWX2evhU6MGU
