      It is not mistake you know...
      You can tell
      100 Celsius = 100°C
      100 Farenheit = 100°F
      100 Kelvin = 100°K
      Or!!!
      100 DEGREES Celsius, 100 DEGREES Farenheit, 100 DEGREES Kelvin...
      You know that sign " ° " that is written in situation like this? 100°K
      Oh wow, that sigh is literally a degree sign, so yup, Linus wasn't wrong at slightest...
      You can leave word "degree" in common talk, but it is actually still there and you mean it
      Actually there is a situation when you cannot say degree... It is if you mention light temperature, like 6000K, and it is MUCH different from actual temperature (it is not that you lamp runs at around 6000°C)

    • @tasteyfoood
      @tasteyfoood 2 года назад +68

      @@DimkaTsv Degree K or °K was used in the past but it became obsolete by international agreement in 1967. See resolution 3 of the 13th General Conference on Weights and Measures.
      Like you said common talk is fine but the Celsius and Fahrenheit comparison doesn't work because, unlike them, Kelvin is an SI unit.
      For instance despite Kelvin being just shifted from Celsius, Celsius was derived from getting a mercury-in-glass thermometer and marking the ice-point and steam-point on it. The distance between these points is then divided into 100 divisions or degrees. The units used here are thus called degrees Celsius.
      Kelvin, the SI unit of temperature, is based on the triple point of water (The temperature where water can exist in all 3 states). 1 K = 1/273.16 of the triple point of water. Kelvin, as an SI unit is similar to the meter and the second, and we don't say degrees meter, or degrees second.

      Yeah, as a grammar lover, I winced a bit. However, as an engineer, I think it should just be "degrees Kelvin." Every other temperature unit uses "degrees" in the name including degrees Rankine, the customary unit version of absolute temperature. It's not uncommon or unwise to write it as "°K" in calculations just to keep it straight that it's a unit not a variable or constant; K is used pretty commonly for both. While not technically correct, "degrees Kelvin" is more descriptive and clear, and I'm not going to fault anyone for accidental additional clarity and not remembering a single exception to a rule.

    Darn it! I must have missed your visit. I currently work at D-Wave, and they definitely have some pretty sweet tech. Not only do they have some of the coldest spots in our universe, but also they keep it that way for years at a time. That's actually an amazingly complicated challenge. The idea that the D-Wave device could be reduced in physical dimensions is not out of the question. Currently the main reason for having such a large box is for us humans to fit inside of it in the rare event we need to fix things and to make it look cool. ;) The future for D-wave looks quite bright. There are many things planned in the future to improve the already favourable performance even further.
    Also, I completely agree that Linus should be saying 0.015 kelvin, on top of that, the output on the device even says 0.008 kelvin to boot, so we're actually running even colder than he said!

      @brandondenis8695 7 лет назад +41

      martyg23 The fundamental ideas of the D-wave device are actually reasonably easy to think about. Putting them together is where things start to get complicated.
      Really the entire device just solves optimization problems. That is, it tries to find the best solution to a given problem.
      The D-wave device does this by quantum annealing. That is it starts in one very easy to solve state and slowly morphs into the problem you want to solve. At the end you're either at, or very near the optimal solution.
      The solution space of the D-wave device is exponential. That means that for each qubit added the number of possible states to check doubles! It grows stupidly fast! The D-wave device uses tunneling to decrease the distance between far away states. This means that you can much more easily move between different states to the correct one.
      The problem with temperature is that the hotter it is the more likely you are to jump out of the right state.
      There are more things, but those are really the big ones that are needed to be known to understand how it works without getting into the math of it.

    Amazing video! Can't wait to see what other developments happen in quantum computing.

    • @yourlocaltoad5102
      @yourlocaltoad5102 3 года назад +7

      Celsius is more practical since it’s defined by the points where water freezes (0°C)and where it boils (100°C), so it is something we can relate to with our daily experiences.
      Pretty much everyone has seen ice and boiling water at some point and pretty much everyone has a rough understanding of how these temperatures feel.
      Kelvin has the same distance between degrees as Celsius, but it just wouldn’t make sense to use it in daily life since the range of useful temperatures would be absurdly high (0°C being 273,15°K) and it would be harder for us to relate to it, since we have no direct understanding of the 0-point.
      It’s more accurate in scientific use, but Celsius is more accurate in human use.

    • @ShaniAce
      @ShaniAce 3 года назад +1

      @@yourlocaltoad5102 I fully agree, but try to explain that to Americans. 🤣
      Still, with Kelvin being the most accurate unit, it would once and for all eradicate all discussions and issues and make everyone use the same unit (of course I'd also 'settle' for everyone to use Celcius but that seems unlikely).
      Getting one side to use Celsius or the other side to use Fahrenheit is a futile effort, but getting both sides to use Kelvin could be more fruitful since no one would feel defeated (not that I think that switching to the more accurate unit should feel like a defeat, but that's just how most humans's psyche works, unfortunately).

      Hasibur Reza Zitu Not sure that's physically possible. As seen, almost the heft of a quantum computer is cooling-which apparently needs conditions colder than anything in the known universe to operate. My guess is, there would be some greater or otherwise more significantly disruptive technologies available long before we see a 'quantum computing mobile phone sized device'. Though in fairness, a mind blowing consideration indeed.
