  • It can take some time to break in a catchers mitt. It will be worth it in the end if you do it the right way. Matt Walden, from Walden Gloves, goes over the techniques that work best for him.
You'll learn how to spot a pocket, shape your glove and what to do after you have the perfect glove shape.

Should you oil a new glove during the break in process?

If you have the right type of oil it's fine. Try to find a product that is all natural.

So what do you do to the glove when you "set it up"?

The main point of the setup is spotting the pocket and then forming / shaping around that one spot so that when you get it to the point that you can go catch, ideally with a harder thrower, heavies, machine. The mitt is already ready to go from a pocket perspective. It saves time reducing the mis catches / not getting the pocket that you usually get when breaking in a CM. Saves time and also helps the CM break in more "perfectly." With catchers mitts there really isn't any way that I have found to speed up break ins other than catching a lot of bullpens. So when I get the glove ready to start catching I want it already shaped and formed. It's made a big difference for me in the final result.

As a catcher you look to catch the ball where the web and the palm come together, not in the middle of the palm. Come on now !!!
