      Well, being honest, the length has to be separated in: explanation of the lock, and then picking of the 18 pins. That's, let's say, 180 seconds for pin (being generous today). That comes to 10s per pin. So, if this were a normal lock, the video would be 2 minutes shorter.

    LPL, I'd like to see you and Bill pick euro cylinders in their proper position - upside down. Every single time either of you 2 get one of those, you clamp it up as an American picker... Granted this is America - and you can do what you want, but like you just said, you train yourself to pick in 1 direction. Now, I would agree that it's a pain in the butt. Such as, if you overset a pin in the conventional manner - pins facing down, sometimes you can ease up on tension and take the pins and free it up. It's more difficult to do so with the pins facing up. Were fortunate enough not to have a lot of euro locks in this country - thank god, I hate the ones that I encounter in the field - i'm not proficient in upside down picking.

      I've worked it both ways, too. I'm seriously slow and clumsy by comparison to any of the YT pundits, yet while i find the shift difficult it is not a real barrier to results. Helps if you twist your brain around. ;-) But seriously, for me it's a sort of mental spatial rearrangement. Once I'm re-oriented, it works okay. I suppose it will get easier.

    LPL, I'm addicted to your channel. The shackle on this lock looks rather thin. Non-destructive picking is an art that I appreciate, but what about actual security? Is this lock over-balanced with a difficult to-pick core yet an easy to cut shackle? If so, what are your thoughts on this?

    • @namrednop
      @namrednop 6 лет назад +4

      No shackle can withstand an Angle Grinder attack! It's just that some shackles (thicker 1/2") take a few seconds longer to cut than others (thinner shackles). But in the end, they all get cut into two pieces rather quickly!

    • @BillsBayou

    it seems like practically every lock with high pin counts is pulling some sort of deception with making some pins non-functional or non-existant. also, did you try raking this one? those high pin count locks usually get raked quickly

    I have an idea - all the picking is based on applying pressure to the core and then setting pins one after another. What if a lock worked on principle of split key - the first part you insert to the keyhole, then you have to close the access by a sliding mechanism and the turning of the core is done by a separate mechanism operated by the second part of the key... Wouldn't this kind of lock been inherently unpickable? Without destruction of any of its parts?

  • @IncertusetNescio
    @IncertusetNescio 5 лет назад

    This video teaches me that locks that look tough can be marshmallows as Bill puts it. This is one of those locks I thought "wow! that looks effectively unpickable!" *gets picked in

    • @fredhenry101
      @fredhenry101 5 лет назад

      Worth considering:
      1) At the very least, that's 4 minutes the thief is slowed down. That's worth a lot, each minute makes it more likely they get caught or give up and find an easier lock
      2) LPL puts hundreds of hours into picking. His practice sessions involve setting up a LINE of locks to go through. He is a master lockpicker, and I don't consider that exaggeration. He's put in the work. So just because he can do it doesn't mean that your standard issue burgler can.

    Re: picking from different directions, that's also why I always wince when a picker picks an euro cylinder the wrong way around. Sure you can pick it when it's upside down, but would you pick it as easily when it's actually in a door the right way up?
    (Not that I ever understood why the euro cylinder has the pins on the bottom, if a spring breaks it basically fails closed, whereas if the pins are on top the lock should still function without any springs.)

    • @RealUnimportant
      @RealUnimportant 6 лет назад +1

      When it comes to keeping something you care about secure, would you rather something fails open or closed?

    • @raphidae
      @raphidae 6 лет назад +2

      +RealUnimportant this is not a matter of failing open vs failing closed, but a matter of failing closed vs failing functional.
      With the pins on top, gravity will pull the pins down, so a broken spring means a key can still push them up to the sheerline and the lock would still work as normal. With the pins on the bottom, a broken spring means the pins will be pulled down by gravity, are no longer pushed up against the key and thus permanently block the sheerline. The lock would be permanently non-functional (for either the real key or a lock pick).
      I know what failure mode I'd prefer :)
