2011 was already proving a difficult year for Japan, even before the recent disaster. The nation was hit hard by the financial crisis and in recent years has been struggling to cope with both an ageing population and a disaffected youth. With people struggling to find full time employment even before the quake and cases of depression and suicide on the increase, there are fears that in the aftermath of the recent disaster the situation will become unmanageable. This report paints a bleak picture of a society "in a downward spiral" and yet as the nation appears "calm and un-phased" it asks whether from the ashes of the recent tragedy a renewed determination to rebuild their country can grow.

When I was in Japan a few years back (2016) one of the things I noticed was how few children there were. I saw a few young families but not much. It was extremely noticeable.

I will never forget my trip to Japan in the 80s when I was a student. They were and still are really patriotic and they were proud to probably surpass America's economy, however after 1989 Japan's economy stagnated and eventually came into recession. It is sad to see those once happy and proud people to be anxious.

If I was a younger man in J, passed over for a salaryman track and with few job (and hence family) prospects, I might look to the countryside. An aging rural farmer might appreciate a young apprentice, and though it resigns to a likely chaste life (as women especially tend to urbanize), perhaps at least there will be quiet, and nature …. and respectable-if-nearer-subsistence work.

Nobody is asserting superiority here, is it so hard to look at what she is, a sociologist, and not her race? Please tell me where she does that, I'd love to see you try. And your misplaced ethnic rhetoric if bordering on racism.

And yet Japan is one of the safest countries in the world--in 2016 SIX people died of gun shot wounds there. For the whole year. In a country of 125 million people. Compare that to the U.S., a country of 330 million--33,599 people died of gunshot wounds in America in all of 2016. And life expectancy is still the highest in the world--an average Japanese will live up to 83 years of age, fully 4 years more than an average American. So which country is going through crisis? And poverty rates and unemployment rates are still lower than they are in most other nations of the world. 40% of youths are unemployed, yes, but youths are very uncommon there--Japan is the oldest country in the world. If this is a downward spiral, then sign me up since clearly the U.S. is in a worse downward spiral by all objective measures.

This is not an us vs them discussion though, and its not all about statistics. This is about culture and mental states/feelings, you must understand that Japanese do not typically have the same upbringing and expectation and pressures for them are different than western culture. There is a far greater sense of collective depression in japan than much of the west.

Only North Korea kept its glory. This is the inevitable result of Westernisation in Asia.
Everyone loves to criticise the "savagery" of countries like Iran, etc., but they are aware of a fundamental truth - when your population has millions of people, planting a tiny seed in someone's head can make a whole society collapse.
Give an inch, and there are millions to turn it into a mile. Humans need discipline, not freedom. Total freedom turns people into lazy idiots.
North Korea is a model nation in Asia. Strong, secretive, disciplined. Watch the rest of East Asia fall to ruin, NK will be the last ones standing.

Having so few friends in a world that already hates you doesn't really pan anything out in your favor, especially when those far few friends are literally too far from you (Iran, Cuba), are beginning to abhor you (China) or couldn't really support you if shit really hit the fan. China could, but why sould they when they can barely tolerate Kim Jong Il's regime?

Japan is one of the most right-wing countries in the developed world. Their xenophobic immigration policies have contributed to their economic stagnation. Their traditionalist system has helped to created thousands of zombie companies. Small rural towns are becoming abandoned. Their population is declining and Tokyo proper will have half its population by 2100, and half of the remaining people will be 60 years of age or older. They are stuck in the 80s as their conservatism makes them resistant to change. Their largest companies have lost their competitiveness and innovation. While immigration would bring entrepreneurship to the country as well as free tax money for the Japanese government, their static and closed off nature prevents and progress from taking place. Japan is one of the most right-wing countries in the world.
Scandinavia is a collection some of the most left-wing countries in the developed world. (I use Scandinavia rather than an independent country, so that the populations are more similar. All the countries there are also relatively similar and have a free travel zone between them called the Schengen Area) Denmark is the happiest in the world. They have living wages, and their government takes care of them. They have more time to pursue their dreams as a result. Norway has managed its money so well, that newborns are given a fund of $90,000. Every citizen is a digital millionaire. Scandinavia has weathered the recession relatively unscathed. When I broke my arm in Norway, I was foolish not to take advantage of the health care system there. Scandinavia is a collection of some of the most left-wing countries in the world.
