The subject of "hell" or "hell fire" as a place of "eternal torments for the wicked" has been around for millennia, but is it "the truth" ? No. According to the King James Bible and the Catholic Douay Version, Jesus went to "hell".(see Ps 16:10; Acts 2:27, 31) So, where did Jesus go to ? A "place of eternal torments for the wicked", when Jesus was righteous ?
When Jonah was in "the belly of hell", at Jonah 2:2, where was he ? In a place of fiery torment ? No. He was inside a huge fish when he was swallowed by it.
When the Catholic Douay Version was published in 1609/1610 C.E. and the King James Bible in 1611 C.E., the word "hell" in English meant this: "Old English hel(l) . Ultimately from an Indo-European word meaning “to conceal."(Microsoft Encarta Reference Library 2005)
At Job 14:13-15, it reads according to the Catholic Douay Version: "Who will grant me this, that thou mayst PROTECT ME IN HELL ("hell", Hebrew sheol, meaning "the grave"), and hide me till thy wrath pass, and appoint me a time when thou wilt remember me?"
"Shall man that is dead, thinkest thou, live again? all the days in which I am now in warfare, I expect until my change come. Thou shalt call me, and I will answer thee: to the work of thy hands thou shalt reach out thy right hand."
Job was asking God to ' protect him in hell ' or conceal him in the grave upon death "and hide me till thy wrath pass, and appoint me a time when thou wilt remember me", awaiting a resurrection from the grave or from death where he is compelled to remain to this day, in which Job ' expects a change to come, from death to life ', when God, whose name is Jehovah (see Ex 6:3, KJV), will "call me, and I will answer thee".
The belief in "hell" as a place of "eternal torments for the wicked" hinges on the belief of immortality of the soul, but here is what the Bible says, according to the Catholic Douay Version, as at Genesis 2:7: "And the Lord God formed man of the slime of the earth: and breathed into his face the breath of life, and man became a living soul."
So, this shows that when Adam was created from "the slime of the earth" or ground, and Jehovah "breathed into his face the breath of life" that "man BECAME (and NOT put within) a living soul". The word "soul" in Hebrew is nephesh that literally means "a breather, a breathing creature", so that ANYTHING that breathes oxygen IS a "living soul", and before Jehovah ' breathed into Adam's face the breath of life ', he was a DEAD soul, or non-breather.
Here are some more scriptures to show what the soul is, as at Leviticus 23:29, 30, that reads according to the Catholic Douay Version: "Every soul (or breathing person) that is not afflicted on this day (of Atonement), shall perish from among his people: And every soul that shall do any work, the same will I DESTROY from among his people."
At Deuteronomy 12:20, 23, it reads according to the Catholic Douay Version: "When the Lord thy God shall have enlarged thy borders, as he hath spoken to thee, and thou wilt eat the flesh that thy soul desireth......"
"Only beware of this, that thou eat not the blood, for the blood is for the soul (or "life of a person or animal", for without blood, a person or animal dies): and therefore thou must not EAT the soul (or blood) with the flesh (making sure the dead animal is properly drained of blood, showing that they grasp the sacredness of blood, to be used only for atonement, Lev 17:11)."
At Isaiah 53:12, it reads according to the Catholic Douay Version: "Therefore will I distribute to him (Jesus Christ) very many, and he shall divide the spoils of the strong, because he hath delivered his soul unto DEATH, and was reputed with the wicked: and he hath borne the sins of many, and hath prayed for the transgressors."
At Jeremiah 2:34, it reads according to the Catholic Douay Version: "And in thy skirts (speaking of Jerusalem as a wicked woman) is found the BLOOD of the souls of the poor and innocent? not in ditches have I found them, but in all places, which I mentioned before." What has been learned so far ?
That the soul breathes, eats meat, can be destroyed, has blood, dies, and therefore what is the soul ? Anything that breathes oxygen, is "a living soul", so that we ARE souls, with all our desires.
At Matthew 10:28, it reads according to the Catholic Douay Version: "And fear ye not them that kill the body (or who are now in our present fleshly body), and are not able to kill the soul (or who we are as a person, whereby we can be recreated with a new body in the resurrection): but rather fear him that can DESTROY (Greek apollumi, meaning "to destroy fully") both soul and body in hell ("hell", Greek geenna, transliterated as gehenna, meaning "everlasting destruction").
And at Acts 3:23, it reads according to the Catholic Douay Version: "And it shall be, that every soul which will not hear that prophet (of Jesus Christ), shall be destroyed from among the people."
So, the soul is NOT immortal, but is us as a person that can be destroyed, which also "puts to death" the false belief of "hell" as a place "eternal torments for the wicked", for there is either "everlasting life" for the righteous (see John 3:16; 6:40) or "everlasting death" or destruction for the wicked.(see Deut 30:19; Ps 37:10; 2 Thess 2:7-9)
So, the teaching of "hell fire" as a "place of eternal torments for the wicked" is NOT based on the Bible, but from pagan sources.(see Jer 7:31; 19:5; 32:35, where the burning of Israelite children in the fire to the Ammonite god Molech was an "abomination" and "sin")
