As someone who lived across the street from a person with a crazy stalker, there's basically nothing that can be done against stalkers legally. Stalking carries very minor charges even if property damage and harassment is involved, so if they do serve time it's minimal, similar to SA crimes, people are more worried about the stalker's future.

To be fair, defamation is really hard to win so lawyers advisor their clients to focus on the easiest claims to prove. The jail claim is an easy claim to prove defamation because it is documented and there are not that many arguments you can used against it. For the stalking one, a easier argument against it is that the defense could claim they felt their life was threaten and being stalked. Now she could argue the stalking charges are a lie but I am guessing there is paperwork for a restraining order which does not need that much evidence to get. All in all, I am not following the story that closely but if I had to make an educated guess this would be it.

Long story time: Many years ago now, a surfer was drowning in my hometown (along Lake Michigan). A group gathered on the pier, helplessly watching the man get battered with the waves into the pier, dragged out a bit, and repeat. A man who'd been walking the pier with his s/o suddenly jumped in to help. Now, there were 2 drowning young men in the lake. A few of my friends were there, teens at the time, and they used the emergency phone located on the pier to notify Coast Guard. USCG pulled up on the other side of the pier from drowning victims & threw life rings to my friends to throw to the men. Thankfully, they were both rescued in good condition, and it resulted in our city installing life rings along the pier. There have been many others here who weren't so "lucky," however.
Long story longer - I agree with what's been said. If you CAN rescue, rescue; if not, seek a rescuer ASAP.

As a life guard, the longest 7 seconds of my life were 7 seconds I thought a boy was messing with me by purposefully swimming at the bottom of the pool. I went in and got him, he had water in his lungs, the first step before losing consciousness. Those friends are some real monsters.

    • @semievilsquirrel

I was a lifeguard at the local pool and people don't realize that drowning is not usually a big, splashy event - which makes it even harder to identify. I pulled a young boy out who seemed to be trying to slowly climb through the water. It was creepy, tbh. He coughed a bit when we got him out, but thankfully no other measures were necessary. Scared the crap out of my teenage self.

@@semievilsquirrelI was a lifeguard for ~5 years in HS/college at a neighborhood pool. Had 6 or so saves in that time. Most were easy to see since I was familiar with the weak swimmers & recognized when they got too deep. I had a few saves as I was older, one was a non swimming couple at the beach at low tide, that couldn’t stand later in the day when tide came in. We had a group of college friends pounding beers on the sand bar all day (July 4th), 2 former lifeguards in the group went full Baywatch & pulled the couple in. The other was just a few summers ago while on a float trip. That was one of the only scary ones, since it involved a powerful current & two early teens kids who had tipped their canoe.

I grew up swimming and have always been a good swimmer. That said, I've nearly drowned twice after getting pushed in water. Because you're caught off guard, you dont always have time to catch your breath, so you inhale water. You're disoriented and try to center yourself, but your gravity is different and now you can't tell which way is up for air.
"But you're a good swimmer" is not an excuse, DON'T PUSH PEOPLE INTO WATER! These were poor friends, not only for waiting so long to act, but acting without thinking. What Chris went through is a terrifying experience, and no joke is worth that price. So glad he survived, and hope that he gets the support he needs to thrive and grow. ❤️

I went to high school and college with Chris and have been following the incident since the beginning. The most insane part to me has been that on April 15th the family’s lawyer made a post that said the cops stated that they wanted to “hear Chris’ side of the story”before they came to any conclusions. This was when he was still very much in a coma and no one was sure he would make it. The “friends” statements had already changed and there was a confession to pushing him in. There is so much that can be said for how poorly the police have handled this and how none of his “friends” helped him. It was two strangers that jumped in to save him.
Now his focus is on recovery but he also turned 26 this year and was working on his education. He no longer has health insurance from his family so he has set up a go fund me to help because we know his bills will be astronomical

While the police actions may seem infuriating depending on the jurisdiction and department if the victim is still alive they are still required to at least attempt to get a statement from them. Also with this being a drowning, an accident still has to be ruled out. Remember the criminal standard is beyond reasonable doubt and I can imagine any half decent lawyer pulling a horseplay defense along with "fight or flight" to explain the lack of response.

And with both of those headaches ironically and stupidly enough the disability I was receiving was $200 too much to receive help for my transplant so I'm not even done with treatments. The unneeded stress my family I have gone through because of how ridiculous the rules, restrictions, and the lack of help from social security themselves on how to navigate between them the insurance and the hospitals. Also seeing almost every nurse, specialized nurses having to leave to convenient er's because they don't get paid enough and some doctors just never being there months on end then go on vacation for another three months while I'm stuck in the hospital wishing I could win the lottery or die so my family wouldn't have to be burdened anymore.

As a guy, the story about Australian woman keeping men out of the art installations was absolutely hilarious. She's right, the discrimination IS part of the art. It is absolutely hypocritical to sue her business for discrimination when there are 'gentlemen clubs' which don't allow women in. Any argument anyone can make for them can be made in this case, too. I hope the higher courts in Australia don't view the case as narrowly as "does it discriminate? Yes. Bad." Also, the malicious compliance was top-notch! Hats off, she's playing 4D chess.
This feels eerily similar to the recent "Would you rather be alone with a strange man or a bear?" thing. Where, as soon as women chose bear, men showed them reasons for why they were right in choosing the bear. Discrimination against women has existed for centuries, if not millennia, but fuck women if they try to play the same game but better.

Keep your chest up (parallel to the sky). It will keep you afloat without the need to "swim" until help arrives.

So for anyone else built like a skeleton with rocks taped to it who *can't* swim, do what this person said but spread your arms and legs as much as you can, kick every couple of seconds, and know that even if *just* your nose is above water at least you can still breath as long as you, as this person also said, stay calm.

The Australian ruling citing that its discrimination to ban men from a pay-to-enter lounge, despite there already existing clubs that ban women there TO THIS DAY would be hilarious if it weren’t so depressing. They can look at the clear double standard for what it is and still somehow decide to enforce it instead of fixing it.

In Tasmania, there isn't any gentlemans clubs that don't also permit women entry, atleast within my brief googling.
In Australia, very few operate as men-only now.
Despite their existence, the key difference is funding, Musuems in Tasmania are publicly funded via grants given by Arts Tasmania and the Department of State Growth. Any publicly funded institution discriminating on the basis of any intrinsic characteristic is illegal, and immoral. In the US this is a clear Title IX violation.
Not only that, are any of these gentleman clubs hosting timeless classics like Picasso? Doubt it.

You don't know just how much I had to scroll to see someone mention this, never mind even talking about the case in this episode.
This what has been bugging me about it from the first time I heard the story. I've known for a long time that a lot of suicides can seem sudden and unexpected, and a lot of family and friends will say "they made plans for the future" in response. I thankfully haven't lost people to suicide, but it has been close, and it was close that it happened to myself. I know for a fact that I would've rather pretended everything was okay and I was making plans with others for the future despite knowing I was going to end myself before those plans would happen. I understand the family and friends must be sad and shocked and want to find someone to blame, but I don't know if anyone outside the community has the right to speculate on it.
Like Phil said, the pastor could have abused her, and she still could've taken her own life. Both can be true. We can say it was weird how he decided to handle the news of his wife's death, but at the same time, people handle grief differently and we can't expect everyone to act the same. All this public speculation feels gross, especially when you know about how "true crime" can be online and go further with this. Especially if the two had kids.
Either way, if more things come out, more things will come out. I don't know these people, I don't know their everyday lives, and I won't try to speculate what happened too much. I just wanted to share my perspective on what we've seen so far, since I also struggled to find comments talking about the situation at all.

One of my brothers when I was 7 or 8 years old, paid an older kid in my complex to push me into the deep end of our public swimming pool. I hit the water screaming and got a massive burst of chlorinated water in my throat. I didn't know how to swim. My brother who had this done was sitting in the corner watching me in my panic with the smuggest look on his face. I could have very easily drowned. I was flailing. I was doing everything wrong. The kid who pushed me was the one who got me out of the water and sat with me the entire time trying to make sure I was okay. He was so shaken and apologetic. He told me what my brother had said, and he kept saying "he didn't tell me you couldn't swim". He knew I couldn't. I had literally told him before we went to the pool.
A couple of weeks ago the same brother died and me and my other brothers are comforted by the fact he's probably in hell. Him having that kid do that to me doesn't even breach the top ten worst things he had ever done either. That kind of evil can live in the hearts of "friends" and "family". Blood might be thicker than water but evil hides in both.
I hope the lady is punished for what she did. He could have died and the fact he didn't doesn't suddenly make what she did any less harmful or worthy of scorn. Even if she didn't know he couldn't. That kid was in the pool hoisting me out in under a minute. They let him be in there for ten. Sick fuckers.

It's not necessarily that they act like everything is fine to not alert people to it. Many times it is just a split second decision. Something seemingly innocuous can trigger a person, and they will go through with it. That's why it is often so difficult to prevent.
Rarely do people plan out the exact date or time. They will have a plan, and even have everything ready. But it needs a prolonged time of pain and desperation so great, that it is hard to imagine for those who have (thankfully) never experienced it, to push people to go through with it. It's actually really hard work to try and justify it to yourself - having to gaslight yourself in to thinking that you will not be missed, everyone would really be happier without you, no one will be traumatized by it, you're actually doing everyone a favor, you aren't hurting anyone you love with your action, etc. takes a lot of effort.
It is usually a lengthy process to get to that point, and the most dangerous things are random triggers and being alone that lead to going through with it.

She ended up in a hospital for a while and fortunately now is totally fine, but sometimes an episode just happens. And unless you can corroborate their story (i.e. did a mechanic actually find a tracker on her car, were there actual threatening texts that she had to block, etc., and the police would know this) you have to be cautious about what was being said. That said, there could be more to this story, but we have to hold out for the police to release more evidence because it can be really hard to be the spouse of someone with a mental illness.

I think there are two things aboit that. One is that people seeing the sheer difference with flashy celebrities compared to the people suffering makes people angry quickly. Politicians don't often flaunt their wealth so openly so people don't have that visual trigger.
Second is that people ARE angry at Politicians, but often they don't get their main money from the people, it's from donors. So they often don't care if some people are mad at them. Never mind that many are extremely old and probably don't go on social media that much. They likely have assistants that take care of that.
I think people see celebrities as the rich that could actually get stuff done. Look at Kim K helping to get people out of prison who shouldn't be there.
What we need is a push for bottom up change. Small government needs to start the change and work it's way up to the top, not the other way around.

He didn’t have the financial literacy available to him when he was my age so he started contributing to his retirement accounts extremely late in life and will have a decent bit but not enough for him and my mom, a year younger than him, to rely on thus very much needing their social security in order to simply live once they retire. He tells me all the time how scared he is for me as I don’t even think about social security as I’m all but sure it’ll be gone by the time I’m his age but also for himself, he doesn’t know what will happen in the next decade of his life. Is disgraceful how we, all generations, are simply told if you want to make money, work yet when we do that and earn an honest living the government at a snap of their fingers can turn around and say sorry about that we can’t do anything about it. So unbelievably frustrating to watch my parents and people my age not know what their long or short term future holds because of the nonsense we deal with in this country.

In regards to the pastor and his late wife, it really shows how difficult it is to tell when people are suicidal. The original video showed someone saying "This was a person making plans/planning to live!" Yeah, that's quite common with people who are suicidal. They are masters at hiding how mentally unwell they are and continue to make plans like normal.

After something like that when you're with the crowd and all of that the panic and beer response to run away. I get the shame that teenager must have gone through and I get the feeling of her friend not wanting to ever see her again.Because that's a lot of shit to go through in surgery and everything out.
These people seem to deliberately try to murder him. A whole f****** group. They all stood around for twenty minutes. In that teen group even the girl who ran away reacted instantly as soon as they realize the extent of the effect the nausea the sickness that guilt everything and she fled. Not these people stood there for twenty minutes before even calling someone. TWENTY MINUTES!!! and these are adults vs kids playing around in a dangerous manner

Honestly, I don't agree with the message of the women-only art exhibition. It feels like a jab to men who never had a say in the social dynamics back in 1960s Australia.

Fr she's risking social suicide by outing herself for this possible payday. She's representing herself against Netflix's lawyer army. She had reasonable deniability before. The whole thing probably would have blown over in a month tops when the next big show comes out and we collectively delete this one from the public consciousness. If she can't prove he lied entirely she's basically admitting to stalking and harassment then bragging about not facing jail time for it. Not to mention how she's going to try to pull off the misrepresentation angle on a "based on a true story" presented show. Based on, does not mean factually accurate. She's doomed. Maybe that's karma.

As someone who has been pushed into a lake before, I can guarantee that it sucks. I could swim at the time, but when I got pushed in, my brain was too panicked to even remember how to swim. I was just flailing about, and was lucky someone fished me out quickly. To this day, almost ten years later, I still avoid water and the sounds it makes as best I can. There was even a span of time when the fear of water was so bad that even a shower could trigger a PTSD-like response. I can't imagine what it would be like for someone who can't swim to be pushed in if it was that bad for me. Absolutely that 'friend' deserves some kind of punishment; Chris deserves justice.
