I use to have the VHS video showing the restoration and first run of Santa Fe 3751.. Nice to see her still running the rails! Last time I was at the grand canyon.. The rails had trees growing up in the middle. Sum sections had missing rails near Williams, AZ due to metal thieves
The switch at Williams Junction leads to both the Grand Canyon RY and the BNSF Peavine to Phoenix, AZ (and Parker, splitting off at Matthie). The route through the town of williams used to be the main line and pretty much all passenger trains would pass through there but since the end of ATSF passenger service, the line that connected back with the Transcon to the west of Williams was abandoned and as a result, Amtrak stops at Williams Jct. and passengers are bussed back into Williams.
This is like, 5 years after the video, but thank you. I'm in love with steam locomotives and NEVER get tired of watching them. Awesome video. Good work. Thank you. Kudos to the engineer for the extra whistle blasts for the video.
Because the trips are really expensive and hard to organize. I'm sure if there was more of a demand for these trips and more opportunity, it would run more often. That's the problem with main line steam these days though.
Cto O Thank you for the comment, glad you liked it! If you liked this, you should look at another video I did that's similar in style to this one, search for "Denver and Rio Grande Steam Train 315 - Durango and Silverton".
I remember when I saw it race by along highway 89, then being able to get into the cab when 3751 stopped at Parker for the night. Really upset I lost all those pictures and videos.
I play on the 3751 steam engine when I was a kid when it sat in front of the San Bernardino depot my grandfather worked for the Santa fe i have old 16mm.moivies running this.
Oh so thats how the Phoenix trains get down to my neck of the woods. Thanks, sometime if I return shall have to try hanging around Junction area for a bit.
4:28 man: ahhh what a nice day to take some pics and videos of these steamys 4:29 hat: cya man I ain't seeing trains 4:30: *AYYYYYYY GET BACK HERE YOU*
I wish 4960 would run from Williams, AZ to Los Angeles, CA, and perhaps a round trip excursion from Los Angeles to San Diego, California. No diesel consist at track speed.
brian falzon That's a great idea. It would be a great way for 4960 to return to the mainline for the first time since the 60's and 70's, back when it ran the circus train on the CB&Q.
I understand in Barstow it was filmed at the grade crossing of Lenwood road but I looked on it on google maps and lenwood road is an overpass over the tracks
Lenwood Road used to have a crossing gate, however the overpass was built shortly after this. I don't exactly remember when but I think construction on it started in 2013 or 2014.
Does grand canyon no longer have steam engines in regular service? When I was there a little less than ten years ago they did, but they were not in good condition. How are they on money?
I wish 3751 would run in the east. *cough* Pennsylvania *cough* Harrisburg to Lewiston round trips *cough* No diesel assist *cough* at track speed *cough*
ikr what would be awesome seeing it in PA IN OH and other eastern states I wish steamers like 3751 traveled down here to FL but probley the farthest they would be able to go is Jacksonville since csx doesent allow steam exscursions on its rails unlike NS as NS runs to jacksonville
tommy4trains yea CSX owners are a few bad choice words but CSX actually owns C&O 614 but they want to upgrade it to natural gas and where's the fun in that I wish they would just sell it to a steam organization to restore it, it ran a decade ago if I'm not mistaken and isn't in bad condition but thanks to CSX it's sitting out in the weather slowly deteriorating
Ikr almost any steam engines run in (cough) pennsylvania (cough) because of (cough) amtrak (cough) csx (cough cough) I'm so sad almost all the steam engines running in Pennsylvania are at strab urgent or at steamtown
Why was it run over the A&C instead of across the ATSF (BNSF) Transcon? I mean was BNSF against it even with em having all that rescue power in-tow. On other notes I would love to a Scotty Special organized, LA to Chicago and return via Raton Pass, NM. Then maybe 30 car organized reefer same route using a long offset cupola waycar fully restored of course. we all can dream... great vid by the way thank you. watching these steamers makes me nostalgic for Tom Mix reruns and coke from a glass bottle and maybe bag of planters peanuts.

Since you have a map of it maybe you would know now where does the Grand Canyon Railroad switch off compared to when the 3751 ran to Parker Arizona? I was there in 2011 and came via Amtrak SWC, I remember seeing the switch off at Williams Junction but I thought the track just ran from Williams Junction to the Grand Canyon Village.
7-1-2013: VERY nice production. A discussion/video about HOW you made the video (video and audio equipment, pre- and post production software) would be appreciated!
1 thing that confuses me about this visit is why didn't 3751 depart with the train at Williams, AZ til they got to the shops where the engines and some equipment stored?
Fun fact: The GCR tried to acquire sister 4-8-4 #3759 which was (and still is) on display in Kingman AZ for operation on the GCR but the citizens Kingman voted against it.

If 18 ever returned to the GCR with 29 and 4960 3751 can join the three and could do a train with 4 steam locomotives! Edit: This comment aged badly, she has returned home to Pennsylvania

Or maybe I should of said railfair not NRHS convention
SP&S 700 too, it'd be nice to see her and 4449 do something besides spin their tires in Portland for once.
Daylight will fit for doubleheading with 3751
I love the sound of a ATSF 6 Chime.
It's nice to see everyone in support of these events. Good for the community.

yea great awesome trip video of 3751 return from the gran canyon and other trains too
Because the trips are really expensive and hard to organize. I'm sure if there was more of a demand for these trips and more opportunity, it would run more often. That's the problem with main line steam these days though.
They did two runbys, one each way. Don't remember where the NB one was but the southbound one was at MP 41.
Depends on the trip. I'd say getting a cab ride is probably always going to be the hardest to pull off. I actually did both on this particular trip.
How did you even keep up with the train if you were not riding on it
Coaster, where is this place at 46:06?
Oh, good. I'm glad to hear she still runs. But why not so often?
I Remember the Grand Canyon that I Visited 3 years ago! And the View Was Beautiful.
I might be going there for vacation or my mom might be taking me out of school to go there
This video was awesome to watch thank you.
I've been to Santa Fe twice long time ago. The beautiful city! In Korea, Yong In
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it.
Outstanding video, excellent narration. Very informative. My son & i thank you. Plz make more like this!

very nice video Mike. This is one of the best video's covering the Grand Canyon Limited excursion I've seen by far.
A beautyfull and interesting video trip through the Grand Canyon landscape.
Fantastic motives from the Canyon and powerfull old steam engines
That was an awesome trip to watch.I wish it could come thru Memphis,Tn
Thank you very much!
Cool video! The second view of 3751 in the night is my favorite!
Yeah the black and white texture makes it easier to see the train and it looks pretty bad ass
Yeah, it just doesn't get out all that often. It just made a trip to San Bernardino last weekend.
I remember when I saw it race by along highway 89, then being able to get into the cab when 3751 stopped at Parker for the night. Really upset I lost all those pictures and videos.
Thank you!
Great video once again.
1945 I learned a lot about this ole locomotive for AT&SF, she is a great machine as I remember.
I play on the 3751 steam engine when I was a kid when it sat in front of the San Bernardino depot my grandfather worked for the Santa fe i have old 16mm.moivies running this.

Very magnificent trains

That's a good distinction being the oldest 4-8-4 in existance, along with Union Pacific's 844 4-8-4 being the only steam locomotive never retired.

also it's incredible how much more the diesels smoke than 3751 in some of the shots. I think the argument of which is cleaner is a moot point!
EXCELLENT!

I never noticed that the first time I watched it lmfao 🤣
When the Grand Canyon was formed 6 million years ago, was that when dinosaurs roamed the earth?
Well, since birds are technically dinosaurs, yes :) But the dinosaurs you're talking about all went extinct about 65 million years ago.
