The only games I've found that it's not true for have the avalanche/cascading reels because they are meant for you to sit and build up to bonuses. The pays on individual lines are low but steady. You can hit like 5 bonuses in a very short period of time, but everything else you have to get up if you're not winning.

You know, certain newer machines do seem to operate differently versus how traditional video slots operate with an RNG for each reel, I've been feeling that way too.
For me it's the way the bonus symbols land in some of the newer games as the frequency seems to change for remaining reels based on if prior reels had bonus symbols that landed. I should do a test with say, 1000 spins or so!
