    • @AttilaTheHun333333
      @AttilaTheHun333333 5 лет назад +15

      A comeback would make less sense for a digital format, especially since it’s a lossy compression. Furthermore there are basically no spare parts. I heard that the sophisticated tape heads have a relatively short life span.
      I was lucky enough a few years ago to get my hands on a lot of sealed Philips cassettes so I can play around a bit with the format. But yeah a comeback would be cool nonetheless.

    • @IrishCarney
      @IrishCarney Год назад +2

      It can't because it's proprietary. Nobody can legally manufacture a DCC deck or portable player without Phillips' consent and they've given up. But if a format and player are open-sourced (including the hardware), then that changes everything. This is why anyone introducing a new format should open-source it. Reassuring people it would survive the death of its creator company encourages buy-in and prevents format death.

    • @88porpoise
      @88porpoise Год назад

      @@IrishCarney Any patents would have long expired (the global standard is 20 years) and even trademarks would have lapsed from having not been used in 25 years, so anyone would be free to make DCC equipment and label it as such today regardless of what Phillips says.
      But it won't get any noticeable revival for two reasons:
      1) As mentioned before, digital formats are much more interchangable. Whether you think it is for good or bad, analogue formats generally have their own quirks that are noticeable, but that is much less the case with digital formats where you just rip an .mp1 file and have it play out of your computer the same as out of the DCC player.
      2) It never had significant adoption so there isn't any nostalgia for it.

    • @viiviketomaki7284
      @viiviketomaki7284 Год назад +2

      It was too much of a flop to ever stage a comeback. There's only a handful of players, a small catalogue of music and any and all tapes are pretty rare to come by. Meanwhile Casette and Vinyl had long lives and huge user bases so there's way more music and players. As well as way more people who are nostalgic for the format.

      I think you might be misremembering that. There were no 386-class machines with a coprocessor built into the chip. The coprocessor was a separate socketed chip like it was with the 286 class machines. In the 386-class machines, SX and DX referred to the external bus of the processor. The original 386 (simply called '386') was 32-bit, inside and out, but it was expensive and very few applications were 32-bit at the time. So Intel decided to make a less-expensive version that was 32-bit internally, but had a 16-bit data bus to the rest of the machine. They called the new chip 386SX, and renamed the original '386DX'. The nice thing about the cut-down 386SX was it could be fitted to boards that were essentially hopped-up 286-class, making it a favorite for OEMs like Packard Bell, Gateway, Dell, etc. because they were an inexpensive way to build '386 class' machines for a larger profit margin.
      When Intel introduced the new 486-class chips, they were still using SX and DX designations, but now SX and DX indicated the presence of a working math coprocessor (DX) or lack thereof (SX) within the chip.
      Wait. I said 'working' math coprocessor. Yup. Dirty little secret. All Intel 486-class chips had math coprocessors built-in. But in the SX series, it was disabled at the factory. Intel sold them for less, but the chips were virtually identical. Really betrays the bogus price structure for processors, doesn't it?

      It had tough competition, though. Unlike DAT with its rotating head (quite similar to VHS), DCC’s stationary head meant that the bandwidth of the data stream was too low for anything but compressed audio. Not a terrible thing per se, but it being conceived when it was means that the format is essentially locked into an audio codec that is now considered obsolete and borderline insufficient. And unlike MD, DCC did not have any of the disc-based features like instant selection, editing, deleting or rearranging of tracks. But in the end, none of them really “won” thanks to non-technical reasons (as Matt’s awesomely detailed videos about the formats explain), except maybe for MD for home recording.

    • @JacGoudsmit
      @JacGoudsmit 5 лет назад

      @@nickwallette6201 Your sx would probably be capable of what the PC in that machine did, but only because the PC wasn't doing a lot of work. All it probably did was provide an editor for text information, and a way to record the audio to the memory buffer in real time. When it was done, the memory would hold all the bits that would go to the tape. The duplicators transferred the data from the memory to DCC tape at 64x speed. The normal bit rate of a DCC head is 96 kilobits per second per track, and there are 8 tracks and a slower auxiliary track that ran at 12kbps. So at 64x speed that's a total sustained data rate of 49.92 megabits per second. I'm pretty sure there was dedicated hardware to do that and the 386sx was not involved with that (except controlling the electronics that did the work).

    Thanks for another great vid😎👍 I thought I’d found a mistake in here but I’m pleased to say upon checking it isn’t, but I thought explain what I thought it was just in case anyone else falls for it.
    The ‘Whitesnake’ album you showed here you said was called just ‘Whitesnake’ and this had me confused as I’ve always known that album to titled ‘1987’, named after the year it was released. Turns out we are BOTH right, let me explain. So in the UK, (where I’m from), and the rest the rest of Europe, the album was indeed released under the title ‘1987’ , but in the good old U.S. of A. , it was indeed released as a self titled album. To confuse matters further, according to Wikipedia, (so take this with a large pinch of salt🙄), in Japan it was sold as ‘Serpens Albus’ which apparently is the Latin for “White Snake” in reference to the words on the front cover of the album.
    Anyway, thought I would just post this in case there were any other British/European fans of 80’s Rock music watching this who were a bit confused😁.
    Thanks again, always love the content here & look forward to whatever you coming up next😎🤘👍

    DCC was a "whippin' boy" format. The Music Industry did everything that they could to kill it. At the time, CDs weren't copyable and the only format that could faithfully reproduce them with digital accuracy was the DCC.
    By the time CDROM became available for PCs, the Music Industry had pretty much killed off the DCC. I remember buying my first 1X speed R/W CDROM unit in the mid-nineties as that was when the units became affordable. After that, the MP3 format took off and music piracy via the internet was very rife. You had people on the CDROM assembly line making or taking copies of CDROMS and you had people transcoding CD sound to MP3 and sharing it on News Groups and quite a few web pages later as ADSL took the world by storm.
    These were fun times, for certain! The Music Industry plugged one hole in the dike only to have a multitude of other ones show up via the Internet, workers on the CD assembly lines and music compression codecs.
    Still, they did manage to hold off digital piracy by a few years.
