I've never felt so robbed of 10 euro, this should have been free. I miss Wii Sports

From what I've heard, Reggie had to fight Nintendo back then to make wii sports a pack in deal. So they've always been willing to charge for tech demos.

it's a lesser version of the 1 2 Switch problem, where it shouldn't have been paid, but if it was a pack-in, it'd be a dreadful first impression of the system.

This makes my eye twitch because I've worked for a corporation and this feels exactly like training material for people who have to sell this product. You're paying for TRAINING MATERIAL, not just marketing material, TRAINING material for corpos. That somehow feels worse.

    • @carlwheezerofsouls3273
      @carlwheezerofsouls3273 8 months ago +148

Cause training material, as begrudgingly fucking boring as it may be, actually has a use, To train you, for a Job, that YOU get PAID for.
Whats happening here, is YOU’RE paying money, for boring-ass-training, that you absolutely dont need!
You PAID MONEY, to be quized like THIS:
“WHAT SHAPE IS THE OBJECT SHOWN ON THE LEFT ( A FUCKING CIRCLE)”
      A: A SQUARE
      B: A TRIANGLE
C: A FUCKING WASTE OF TIME
They might as well just have had a Text prompt show up when you start the tour, and all it says is “Can you read, or See, at all?” And a Yes or No option, Both options lead to the game instantly closing.
Would have been just as useful.

@bawnawn "People just need to be smarter" is entirely backwards way of thinking. When you want something fixed, you fix it _at the source._ This is like squashing ants as they leave the colony, mouthing to yourself "if they would only just stop going into my house". No, that doesn't work. You solve the problem at the source, which is taking out the ant colony itself or cleaning your home. People buying this stuff blindly is a problem, but ultimately it is a symptom. Symptoms only go away forever if you remove/fix what causes it, not just wishing the symptoms stopped happening.

When I was at the Switch 2 hands-on event in London, there was a booth for this game hidden right at the back of the hall. There were 6 screens for it and 1 Nintendo staff for each screen, but NOBODY was queueing for it. So I did.
It was easily one of the funniest 15 minutes I've ever had at an event like that. The guy walking me through it tried so hard to be convincingly excited for the first 5 mins, but even he couldn't pretend how pointless it was and we both ended up spending the whole time making fun it. By the time I got to the 'guess the frame rate' game while the dude was explaining what I needed to do and what a frame rate was, I fuckin lost it lol. I know I'm biased but I can't hate Welcome Tour because of that - its confidence in just how 'nothing' it is borderlines on genius. It's so stupid it's almost a masterpiece
.......saying that though, charging money for it is disgraceful lol. I could swear everyone at the event mentioned it 'came with' the Switch 2 like how Astro's Playroom did with PS5 but I could be misremembering
Bottom line = the game is so dumb it's brilliant, but the price is so dumb it's terrible

you also need to remember their rivals for the context of why having these things mattered at the time
after all, how is it meant to compete with the psp if it has no features? or hell, how is it meant to compete against its older brothers, like the gameboy and its advanced(mutated) cousin? it needed them because the market was asking for them at the time
the reason why the switch 2(and also the first switch may I add because lets face it, they are both suffer from basically the same issues) is like this is because there is no rival; and if there is no true competition, why bother doing any better?

How did PlayStation get a free 3d platformer to teach you how the console works that went on to be the framework for Astro bot, a game that won GAME OF THE YEAR, and Nintendo made this paid slop? It’s just mind boggling and disheartening tbh.

All the same assets could have made a 3D Mii world shaped like the console, and the little demos and options would be interesting little distractions when you're not playing a game. The normal menu could be popped up at any time with x, +, -, or whatever button, so no loss and only gain. This could have been a console with personality-Nintendo could have felt _fun_ again. Instead, they've opted to sell their company's soul for $10 a user. It just feels like such missed potential...

      Sega does what Nintendon't like....
      - Not having a $10 Demo
      - Not allowing games to still be digital in a physical case.
      - Have their party racer cost $80 base.
      - Butcher flagship RPGs appeal
      - Create lawsuits based on common game mechanics.
      - Hiring fan-devs.

Reggie spoke in an interview once about how he had to fight tooth and nail to convince the Nintendo heads to make Wii Sports a free pack-in game in the West (it was sold separately in Japan). Apparently the culture at Nintendo HQ in Japan is that giving away a product for free is basically an insult to the people who made it, effectively calling the fruits of their labor worthless.
As someone not part of that culture, I can only say that I view charging money for this as insulting to the consumer.

@zymosan99yes hi i believe you're not aquainted with the fact Astrobot is the sequel to Astro's Playroom and thus features much of the same basics in gameplay, aesthetics, themes and vibes, hence why i described it as a Mini Version Of A Goty Game! hope this helps!

@YerologyWhat is even more hilarious? Astro's playroom also takes the "explore your new console by visiting its features" scenario and actually makes it work.
Doubly so when you realize why certain choices were made. As an example, the SSD level is themed around the PS2, for which Sony was pushing a "remove load times" policy on their first party titles, with games like Ratchet and Clank or Jak n Daxter masking them altogether as part of a wider company policy. Hence why you find them in this level as easter egg bots.
...and then you get these quizzes.

"I miss Astro Bot" was my singular thought as well

Completely unrelated fact, but did you know that The Witcher 3 regularly goes on sale on Steam for under $10?

10 dollars for this, there’s a handful of indie game that actually worth your time

Astro's Playroom had a much higher budget, had more thought, love, and care put into it, and everything could be fully completed right away... and it was bundled in with PS5.
This is a $10 tech demo that you pay $85 DLC for.

And it actually pushed showed off what it could do with water physics and everything. This feels like a knockoff game.

You know what this feels like? This feels like an interactive demo that they would’ve given to investors interested in learning about the hardware and tech behind the up-and-coming console.

Actually, no, after thinking it over I think that might literally be what this is. The corporate speak and artstyle, the weirdly vague explanations for all of the features, the extremely simple and rudimentary gameplay, and the constant positive reinforcement… this all just feels like an ad for “invest in Nintendo stocks”

5:30 You see, The Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour knew it'd have to compete with the Deltarune launch. Luckily with this minigame, you can play Deltarune at home (the Tour 2). Genius design decision, we should all buy another 2 copies of Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour.

Honestly though, controlling the UT/DR soul with mouse sounds kinda fire.

Ironically enough, Deltarune has a boss fight that better shows off some of the new features than this game does.

The thing I can’t fathom is… how do nintendo actually expect people to pay for this? It’s not even pretending to be a game like 1-2 Switch did. This isn’t even Nintendo being greedy, it’s just… stupid.

It is both greedy AND stupid. Nintendo are developing a talent for multitasking.

@_MajorasLabo was… a game, and experience, at least. Sure it was overpriced as hell (as nintendo does) but at least you can get value out of it and I can see the thought process behind its existence.
This is just spending money to buy an advertisement for a console you already own, pretty much. Sure it’s significantly cheaper but you’re effectively buying… nothing.

      @Bluebatstar 8 months ago +27

@TSMSnation I mean, Dan’s a content creator, this is his job so since he made content on it he can justify it. If nintendo were marketing this to content creators so they could make fun of it that’s a remarkably small target market so I doubt that.
