  • Lately, it feels like Hollywood's film and television shows are mostly remakes and reboots. Today, I want to explore the business theory of film remakes, the writing process when adapting stories, and how Hollywood is built on a long history of adapting pre-existing IP into a cinematic medium. I constantly think how the film industry is lacking a bit of original movies and shows. But it’s also very confusing. Everyone says something else about a movie that is so bad, because the critics say so, then someone you know tells you it was great. I honestly think remakes and reboots are fine, but we want something new and original. I’m a writer myself, and I want to see something new and non cliched.

    • @CameoScooby
      @CameoScooby 5 месяцев назад +5

Yeah I agree, I think studios are scared to tackle new ideas because they think it won't do well. I think with good marketing and a good story and a great cast would really help sell the new idea.

  • @AMoran95
    @AMoran95 5 месяцев назад +45

I think you hit it on the nail. Reboots and remakes are safer because the studios know they have those ips and can bring back the original cast or change the cast. I mean a good example for a lot of people is Spider-Man. There is like 7 Spider-Man film projects and the reason each of them feels different is because people know the character and can really change a few things and they know people will buy a ticket. Also people who read come to the movies so they can critique the difference between the film and book, but it’s also because readers want to see the movie so they could see if the film is everything the imagined in their head.

Remakes can be good if they take inspiration from a source and make it into something new. That is completly fine and valid. Sadly I think most people are upset, because some remakes do not feel orginal and that some franchises rely too much on nostalgia. It comes across as if filmmakers or showrunners don't bother enough anymore to create something original or write decent stories or characters as the rely too much on nostalgia and an already existing fanbase. I personally believe that remakes can have potential, if they are made with respect to the source material and tell a compelling story (for example Arcane or The Last Of Us).

This is a really interesting topic, and it's definitely gotten me thinking about why this is happening. But you're right, Makayla. Artists do like to take inspiration. The play that I am working on, I am taking inspiration from multiple things (even the two main sisters are inspired by my best friend and I because she feels like a little sis to me ;)) As well, songwriters as well tend to take little song snippets from each other.

I always try to make stuff that’s original and yes, it does involve taking inspiration from other work as well as the world and environment around you and what you enjoy as well, like merging it all together in a way to make something from your identity.
I’ve been working on my own Marvel Universe and I have my own takes on characters, storylines, even new Storylines, different costumes, teams, etc etc. I’m making sure it’s true to what Marvel is to me but I also want to add my own spin to it.
But even with that, I have my own original superhero universe that’s inspired by so many different superhero brands, and also different entertainment and stories outside of the superhero genre while weaving it into the genre somehow, so different types of characters, powers, backgrounds, genres and tones come into play.
But yeah, listening to you talk about this really opened my eyes a bit more as I work non-stop in my creative writing and stories and I always try to subvert expectations, try something new, and finding the perfect balance in my stories that suits me personally so thanks a lot 😋👍

iced coffee! I mostly agree. It’s not often talked about that so many famous movies come from novels but is somewhat known among cinephiles and avid readers. I will say I do wish that even if studios remake things that they would make it their own! Not just modernize it or make it a musical. For example, ‘the Mask of Zorro’ has been made multiple times in the 20th century but the 1998 one with Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta Jones is definitely classic! Also Rian Johnson’s films being a new invented Agatha Christie mystery.
Also, little note but ‘The Wizard of Oz’ came out in 1939 same year + studio as ‘Gone with the Wind’. Judy Garland won an honorary (jr) academy award when Viviane Leigh won hers (sounded like Makayla said 1933)

I feel like I enjoy shows that were inspired way more than the ones that are literal remakes if that makes sense... Inspirations can bring you so much more novelty than remakes can, just because you still have the freedom to count your own story, even though the new story might happen in the same universe.

10:25 Totally feel like that when I’m writing sometimes!! I intentionally do it, especially if I’m looking for the same tone that some studios take. Definitely.
Also sometimes when I do that, I get into a mental state of “I’m a fraud, I should never touch my keyboard or pens again bc I’m such a hack. I’m a hack and everyone knows it!” And then I go to sleep bc it’s probably 2 am when I start thinking that way. That or I take a day off to refocus and think.

This video is honestly very informative, because I don't think I have thought about it that way, I kinda sorta knew most films were extracted from books, which I find very interesting. But in my opinion reboots are most of the time a no, I feel like there's a difference in taking an idea from something and modernize it or create something bigger rather than just taking the whole concept of something and remaking it.
I hope that makes sense 😅.

This is an interesting viewpoint- i think in our age, it's harder for original content . Reboots are hard because capture the same magic that worked at first can be tricky. Audiences do change and grow older so finding the original charm for mature audience is so important. I do agree that everything is recycled in some way-heck even in anime, the structure of characters and story is recycled but the world building in each is different. Great video and iced coffee

Great video! I would say adaptations work much better than reboots. Adaptations tab into the same audience but like you said "it's an original derivative" it truly requires dissecting what works from the novel , comic, or whatever the original offered, and then perhaps adding new elements that will work better in the new format, whether a movie to tv series. There is so much ingeniutity that goes into that process. They have to extract the essence of the original and use what works then distill that to a new audience. It requires an artist's insights to adapt.
Reboots require much less ingenuity. The changes seem to be arbitrary. And the motivation seems to be money rather than a true creative endeavor. Like Jeff Goldblum's character said in Jurassic Park “Your scientists (movie executives) were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.”
You have great adaptations like the early days of the MCU , unpopular characters like Guardians of the Galaxy are now household names! Then you have unnecessary reboots like the Fantastic Four (2015) which didn't add anything of substance to the franchise, and just seemed like a remake for sake of making one.

Remakes can and should certainly be good thing. The issue Hollywood is having of late is that there is less subtlety with modern remakes. Because a lot of the time, overexploitation of the nostalgic factor is usually the watchword and as such creatives are made complacent in terms of offering up something new or adding in a bit of subtlety to enhance the remake.

My biggest gripe is when movies from the 80's (I lived those years)especially are made into TV shows trying to capture the magic of the movie. For me it erodes somewhat the nostalgia of the movie and they almost always use new actors for tv...never works...money grad in my eyes and heart.

Also I think reboots are good they just have to do it the right way so people don't be thinking it's terrible.

Hello, Makayla! My name is Sabeh and I’m 14 years old and I have a few questions for you:
    1. When getting an Agent/Manager, is there like some sort of website you can hire them off of?
    2. I am really trying to get some auditions in my area, but I have no luck. I tried Backstage, and sill no luck. Do you recommend any other websites?
    3. How did you get your first audition?
Sorry for taking your time away, also I am a BIG fan of your work and I’ve been trying to become a young Actor from taking advice from your videos! Keep up the great work!
Edit 1: OMG MAKAYLA I HAVE AN AUDITION ON SATURDAY!!! WISH ME LUCK!😊

I would love to hear you pick a series/movie and analyze it as a budding screenwriter! Or as an actress!

Same thing with Broadway there is a lot of shows based off of popular movies. (I'm actually doing Anastatia at the moment!) although they are remakes or adaptations there still really good... at least the musicals are.

Ik this is a bit random and has nothing to do with this vid in particular but I just wanted to ask a question. I have to pick my GCSE options next year and I wanna take drama because I’ve been getting into acting recently and have joined a theatre/acting group and I was talking with my brother who took drama GSCEs and he asked me if I wanted to get into acting as a career and I said yes but acting is a hard industry to get into and (for when I’m older) if I got an acting job on something I would have a steady flow of income but then after I finish that acting job my income would drop and paying for things will be more tricky. So my question is how can u easily sustain a good flow of income while not acting/after ur acting job finishes?
(Sorry if that doesn’t make any sense)

Speaking as a layman, I think rebooting a movie is not a bad this just if you do it without messing up the magic around it!

Iced coffee! Remakes have been around since the 1930s in Hollywood, I guess. Some examples I could think of are the Universal horror films of the 1930s such as Dracula and Frankenstein, which have paved the way for other remakes such as the Hammer horror films in Britain. Heck, an original idea such as King Kong had a number of remakes. But I agree that this current trend is more associated with franchises because, earlier on, remakes were just a rare anomaly more-or-less.

I've never liked remakes all that much. I prefer watching movies that are more original ideas. I'm fine with movies that take ideas from other movies and yet make it their own. I think of the scene in "City Of Angels" where Seth's lip is bleeding after he wakes up as a human after falling off the building as an angel. When I later saw "It's A Wonderful Life" and the scene where George Bailey's lip is bleeding once his cop friend finds him on the bridge and he laughs, that scene reminded me a bit of that movie, yet both movies were their own. I've never seen the "Wings Of Desire" movie, so can't compare that to "City Of Angels". I like some tv shows that are remade, though. I think of the new "Monsieur Spade" tv show and knew right away it sounded like Bogart's "Maltese Falcon" character, so in that sense because I'm a fan of the old classic movies, that made me want to watch the show and I've watched it on Sundays since the premiere on AMC.

As someone who enjoys some reboots/remakes, I can relate as a RUclipsr as the people I consistently keep up with on this site have content of their own that’s so good that for my own channel, it’s not that I’m not trying be like them nor copy them, but it’s because I’m inspired by them as for example, 2 NASCAR RUclipsrs I keep up in KamikazeGames and Brock Beard with have done documentaries on their channels that inspired me to make my own about my past in Brook Park in the Sandhurst House.
CodyHGaming who’s another NASCAR RUclipsr has a NR2003 series titled *Can I Recreate?* which inspired me to do my own version with Tim Duncan’s best and worst plays with the San Antonio Spurs during his illustrious 19-year HOF Career. You know what I mean? Same with people I’ve seen do Wheel of Fortune Game Night and Gameplay Videos which inspired me to do the same thing my own way and and also do Jeopardy! since nobody has done that yet. Great video Makayla! So beautifully well spoken!
