They are doing it because it takes the uncertainty out of the game because there will be less kick and punt returns. It is 100% so that Vegas can predict games better. It is for gambling purposes and nothing else.

Goodell's only role is to boost the bottom line of the league and it's owners. He doesn't need to care about the integrity of the game or what fans and the larger football community want from the game. He railroaded this rule through with promises of more money for teams who helped vote it in, which means that the new rule has huge bottom line implications for the league. But for whom? What new NFL partnership would benefit from this? Simple answer: the NFL's new gambling partners. They need a more predictable game flow to run odds from, and squashing the return game is only the beginning. Vegas has probably dreamed for decades how easy it would be to make odds if there were no special teams in the game. If they get rid of the kicking game entirely, it's basically like calculating soccer odds - which has been a racket in Europe for decades. Any time the league wants to implement something that is solely bottom line-based the tipoff is the excuse of player safety, which they have proven time and time again they don't really consider when it rubs against Goodell's role of being a watchdog for NFL profits. This new rule is a signal that the gambling community is openly influencing not only games, but how the game is played going into the future.
@Ray Finkle Ha. No. It's not about gambling, it's about avoiding real measures that would serve player safety but would actually cost money. By changing a rule they can pretend to everyone that their concerned about players while they do nothing about all the artificial surfaces that causing all kinds of short and long term injuries but would cost millions to replace.
The first SuperBowl I watched was that Colts vs Bears game and fist play this guy named Devin Hester takes it 100 yards it was amazing and I fell in love with football ever since
People seem to be reacting very strongly to this; players will still take the ball out, all this does is change the risk/reward factor. Not saying its a good thing, but I don't see it being the monumental shift this is presented as.
I went to the Giants Panthers game this past September 2022 and the 1st play was a kickoff the Panthers fumbled and the Giants recovered the stadium went wild and the nfl is taking that away
I don't know...i really think it will add some new strategies. We will see a lot of muffed kicks too. The vegas angle doesn't make much sense... if anything it makes the game even less predictable.
If the NFL is concerned that it could result in more injuries, then why do it? I doubt this would be the case but I'm interested to know their reasoning.
This isn't difficult. It shouln't be an opening "kickoff". It should be an opening punt. Write sme rules up that allow for teams to fake punt (onside kick), but otherwise make it a punt instead of a kickoff. You still have the kicking action, a return action, the chance at a wild start - including a fake to go for it, ad the punt is much safer than the kickoff.
i just hope that the kickoff rule is a step to removing it entirely and replacing it with the 4 and 15 at the 35. it would make that part of the game significantly better. better chance to go for it, much safer, and much more exciting returns.
can they waive it off before anyone even takes the field for the kick? If they can just wave it off at the 20, dont even send them out... just start at the 25. I HATE this change.
They're doing it to make it look like they're doing something for player safety without having to really do or spend anything. It's a distraction to get away from talking about the real player saftey measures they're not taking because they cost too much, like how they still won't spend to have proper grass fields throughout the league.
Not sure if I’m correct, but why is the NFL constantly trying to change the kickoff when it seems like most head injuries happen during non special teams plays? Again I could be wrong.
It makes absolute no sense to me. Why would a kick returner fair catch the ball when the defenders are thirty plus yards away? Don't the special teams players want to try and get a good return? It's like these owners have no clue about the player's mentality. I don't think this rule will effect much. It would be a complete act of cowardice to fair catch a kick-off.
@@francinecorry633 oh? If so that's news to me. But it's not like the rate is *anything* like it is for the kickoff (nor is the commonness of the play similar at all)

Love that little sound clip introducing the segment: “…uh, we prefer to win.” 💀

Just use the XFLs Kick return rules… it will reduce the injuries and still maintains the kickoff aspect of the game

They should do kickoffs and punts the way the CFL does them. Every punt must be returned but you have to give 5 yards. Much more exciting.

Kick off returns are rarely the best returns it’s to the side line and straight lines
I like one team starting at 4th and 15. You can punt or go for it. I think that's more exciting
Nobody is thinking about the power of when a real returner gets yard and a half, to 6 yards. It will give the returnees an upper hand after 4 weeks.
If we really wanna stop injuries, then stop playing football. No more NFL, it’s too dangerous.
1 Devin Hester kickoff that’s it… punt return TD more exciting & not chaotic destruction for touchback or 25 yds return anyways.
