This is Side Scrollers, the #1 video game podcast on planet Earth.
Those are not prices that Xbox are actually paying for those games to include them on Game Pass; They are internal estimates on what it *would* have cost to include the games on Game Pass if they had chosen to do so at the time that the estimates were made.
The majority of games listed there are not and have never been on Game Pass.
Of the games that *are* currently on Game Pass the costs listed in the article will not have been paid for the inclusion. For instance Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is now available through Game Pass but it is available because it, like all EA games after a certain period of time from release, has been added to EA Play and there was already a deal in place to have EA Play included through Game Pass. Gotham Knights is currently available but was only added a year after release by which point it would have already been shown to have failed to meet the commercial expectations for it.
The fact that these are internal estimates rather than actual figures is stated clearly in the article in question.

The idea of the argument is still sound based on the fact that Microsoft is paying way too much money, going by these estimates, to put games into Game Pass. You can say, "These games aren't in Game Pass," but other games are in Game Pass, and those games had estimates, and Microsoft paid the money to get those games in. The estimates in this article are being used as examples.
@@nerdyneo21 The information was plainly written in the source article they were using anyway. They shouldn't need to bring on an expert in order to read the source they're citing for them.
It's understandable that things can get missed or misread when you're doing something live but the fact this was actually clipped out for later publication is a bit concerning.

Crazy that WB Games might even make profit on a huge flop just because of Microsoft paying them. It's not surprising game studios are lining up to make their games DEI compliant just so they can get on GamePass
The deal never happened..this is all from that document that was in the legal proceedings that got leaked.
Its what they offered for certain gamepass titles.
They better not claim the game was successful tho. Both gamers and investors would have a field day with them. It would straight up result in legal action.

Yet MS paid for an amount so if the game is successful all the money those decs could make by releading the game at full price will be los cause imagine if MS pay 100M and the game at full price could sell 200M that is the risk of making a deal with MS

@@metpachSame. Some people get all bent out of shape about owning everything, but I’m not going to play most games more than once, and I’d never play some of those games at all if they weren’t on game pass. I don’t want them taking up space and collecting dust.

I can't cancel because of this reason I canceled because of other reasons a while back whoever picks the games needs fired.
@@davidframe1613 Yeah, I cancelled after their inclusivity mandates for hiring and game character depictions to all their studios was leaked. MS literally buys great studios, forces them to go woke, and then shuts them down when their games flop. No hope for the future as a Xbox owner. Sold mine.

It's a publicly traded company. The shareholders want as much profit as there can possibly be so no amount of money is ever enough for these people.
I think you're thinking of the investors that directly funded the game and earn a percentage of whatever profit it earns.

They're clueless, but these were MS payment estimates for having/launching these games on Gamepass, so pretty accurate. I remember seeing these figures, I think during the actiblizz acquisition trial.

Way too much money on too many big projects.
We need more High-Fi Rushs double A and lower budget releases and less Triple A big budget releases like The Suicide Squad.
You go all out on the budget for Avengers End Game, not The Marvel's and everything else they keep spending absorbent loads of money on.
It's a problem big companies have created for themselves by wanting to make all the money. I'll stick to smaller indie games and emulated classics thanks.
Not everyone pays for game pass, I make enought rewards to keep it free and am sure I am not the only one, also all the old gold users are now counted as well now afer a name change.

Thats an estimate list about how much MS could pay for those games to be on their service. Suicide squad isnt on gamepas and neither a lot of those games like MK1 or BG3.
I don’t understand how them adding one game takes away the value you were already paying the same price for. The only reason you and others would cancel is purely on principle. It’s a silly idea bc I guarantee you, you will be the .001 % who do that and then cave a few months later when they put cod on.

Its not an real list, its estimated of how much they would've paid, its not on gamepass.
Im pretty sure there are alot of people who stacked thier subsriptions and convered xbox gold to gamepass for years. I have a friend who doesnt need to renew for for the next 2-3 years and paid maybe 60 in total. Theyre definetly not getting full subscription price for those 34 million users.
I genuinely don't understand what's so confusing about them not making money. How many studios do they have? With games in development. Average about a 100 million dollars per game. Plus licensing cost of games going on Xbox game pass. And you see how it's not very profitable.
They could make exclusive games with that much money.

I doubt it's just for a month. It's probably for a year or a couple years. Wb games are always on gamepass for a long time.
$250 million. I'm expecting it more of license right to be placed in rotation or several years. That said all EA games eventually go to Game Pass as part of EA Play with Ultimate. I'm expecting they'll add Ubisoft+ in the near future and maybe give three tiers of Game Pass.
It’s hard to believe many games will forego that kind of scratch because they joined the GamePass service just as it’s hard to believe any of those games could return those numbers to Microsoft based on their draw in new subscribers. I thought part of this whole thing was that the arrangement should help both sides inherently by making the game more accessible and popular.

The black woman is Sarah Bond. She was made Head of Xbox when Phil was promoted to CEO of Microsoft Games. So, Phil didn't get fired in that sense. However, Satya is now making all the big decisions concerning Microsoft Games and Xbox, which means that Phil did get fired in the sense that Satya doesn't trust him to run things anymore. My guess is that Satya and Phil have already planned on when Phil is going to "retire" from Microsoft.

These are all estimates of what it 'would' cost them to put on Gamepass; most of these games never have been (and likely never will be) on there. It clearly states that in the article as well.

That list of games and gamepass licence ESTIMATES are Microsoft's internal guesses on how much it'd cost to get those games on gamepass. Most games listed aren't on the list. They ASSUMED Baldur's Gate would suck and only be worth $5 mill. They ASSUMED Suicide Squad would be a hit and be worth $250 mill. They didn't actually pay for these games or make any deals.

They didn't get those games, but they got other games that they made estimates on and paid money for. So, it's still a sound argument with estimates that are used as examples of how Microsoft conducts its Game Pass business.
@@G360LIVE I absolutely agree that Microsoft are idiots. They were considering throwing a quarter billion dollars down a pit to bring Suicide Squad to gamepass day 1. They have absolutely no idea what gamers want which is why I sold my Xbox and got a Steam Deck.
But the video and its title featured everyone flabbergasted on how much money MS actually spent on these games, which they didn't. Misinformation.
@@nerdyneo21 Funniest part is that MS dismissed Baldur's Gate 3 pre-launch as Google Stadia trash in the leaked memo. Look at the Gamepass library. MOST of those games would (and probably do) fall into MS's own standards as Stadia trash.

I wonder if they are just including all the initial cost if the infrastructure and using it as an excuse. In truth i think some of these closers were about harvesting and cullung employees from these studios, but xbox is doing fine.

Thats hilarious. Only one of those games i played on GP was GTAV and ended up buying it within a week. Already had RDR2 and the rest of the games are not for me......yes it took me that long to play gtav. Never got into any of the first gta games and still dont care for them.

@@WayStedYou Oh that changes the context of the whole video. Offers are big differences than actual agreed contracted costs. A board could agree to offer a game like Suicide Squad allot of money based on it's IP value before release, and then think twice once the product dropped.
I did the math. On the low end for those 10 games on Pass, 1 billion 404 million, or $1,404,000,000 per year

I feel like this list is fake or wrong. As some of these games aren't on gamepass. It's more likely the contract agreement with that high price, and we dont have a defined timeframe.

The metrics for Game Pass success are still unclear. Especially with titles like Hi-fi Rush and it's studio being closed.

This is why Microsoft want to go in hard on mobile gaming, they want the amount of people on game pass to grow because of how costly it is to have games on there, so if 2 billion people “play” on mobile, Microsoft will be desperate to convert that to game pass subscriptions. It’s not about profits, it’s about the amount of users.
