From what I've observed, a "secret" or hidden technique is simply a technique the teacher reserves for those he deems worthy. That, or an application which doesn't have a direct, obvious link to its corresponding technique(s). What trips many of us Westerners up is we're used to a "get-to-the-point" model of teaching where things are made plain to us. In Eastern cultures like Japan & China, at times you have to "earn" the answer, either thru some test, trial, discovery.

I don't believe in "secrets" - only in good and bad technique resulting out of the teachings of good and bad teachers. This one seems to be a very good one indeed! Very convincing!

The embusen lines and direction of your eyes in the Kata MEAN something. If you figure that our, your application of the techniques will look much more like the moves in the Kata than what is shown here.

What he teaches isn't wrong, nor are they "secrets" as the Japanese title claimed nor are they unique to Tomari-te. What he is doing is taking bits from all the Okinawan traditions and attributing it to "Tomari-te" (which incidentally became extinct by the 19th Century so nobody can say what it really was).

+Toraguchi Toraguchi This is basically just Shorin Ryu with some other stuff kind of mixed in. Real Tomari-Te is still preserved by Tokashiki Iken in the Gohaku Kai

I learned the same concepts through Tai Chi. The ultimate offense is a perfect spear, the perfect defense is a perfect sphere. Combine the two and you have the Spiral which is also at the center of martial arts.
No single art can take credit for the concepts because they are ancient and discernible through self study.

Tomari-te Kata are still practiced on some Okinawan style, to say Tomari-te is extinct is incorrect.

Right, that's my point. The only reason why it's a secret is because the teacher hasn't taught it to you yet.

    this is not Tomarite.
this is Okinawa Kenpo of Shigeru Nakamura which was a mixture of Shurite & Nahate.
the only Tomarite in Okinawa Kenpo would be found in the Sekichi Odo lineage by way of the kata of Chotoku Kyan which Sensei Odo learned from Seiki Toma.
Yoshitomo Yamashiro, according to his own website comes from the Hiroshi Miyazato lineage, a separate branch from Sekichi Odo's.

you are 100% correct. There was no Tomari Te influence in Shigeru Nakamura's lineage. There was mention within Taika Oyata's organization that Kuniyoshi was in Tomari but tracing Kuniyoshi's timeline I can not find definitive evidence he was ever in Tomari. Or if he was, what impact if any it would have had on a warrior of his caliber. Kuniyoshi was Naha-Te exclusively. Which begs the question in Oyata's lineage.... why call Seisan of Okinawa Kenpo.... Tomari Seisan when there is no Tomari influence at all in that kata? Seems to be a fabrication to show a division from Okinawa Kenpo after Shigeru Nakamura had passed and Oyata had been teaching in the US.

Actually if you know anything about Okinawan karate history, there were no styles only regions where certain masters lived and taught. They would also send their students to learn from other master's specialties. So Karate has been intertwined from the begining, it changed only when this thing called styles began mainly after WWll. Which did nothing for Okinawan karate except create styles that hindered learning techniques from other master's. But created a way to make money and stop students from going to other master's to learn which Belt Ranking also contributed to this. Now a black belt in A certain style is not recognized by another style. Which is absurd, but that is how you create a money flow that does not leave your organization because it's rank would not be recognized by the other schools.
