How I attach wooden bats to the wheel with clay pad

Making plates or other flat pottery items requires using a bat. This is the method I use to attach bats to the wheel head.

What is the metal rod attached to the edge of the wheel for?

if you’re making ten mugs for example, that’ll help with consistency bc you want to pull them to the same height without taking out a ruler each time to measure
