I was very naiive when I began and just started with very simple cleansing and self love spells without worrying too much. Then I strated to do more research and suddenly I felt I had been doing evrything wrong. Everybody was talking about deitys, wands, cauldrons and all these other things I had never used or, in some cases, never even heard about. So I began setting up an alter with deitys on that I never really felt a connection to. I worked with spells by others and went out of my way to follow them word for word and spent a lot of money on the way because I didn't have most of what was supposedly needed for it. All of that felt so wrong, that I stopped praciticing for years. And then I stumbled across a line somewhere saying that every witch has a different way of practicing and that you didn't have to be wiccan or work with deitys to be a witch and that blew my mind. So I had been right all along! I started my practice and my research once again but this time listening to what felt right for me and sticking to it. The void I had felt without the craft was filked and I couldn't be happier now! The one thing I do wish I had known and done from the beginning, is keeping a book of shadows. It would have been nice to look back at how I started, but it's okay. I keep several seperate ones and they are an invalble part of my craft.

Congratulations on having found your way! That’s amazing 😊 We very much share the same experience. I started my journey out pretty much the same way over 20 years ago, with sincerity and intuition as my guides. Then I came upon my first Wiccan books and all through my teenage years I followed others’ scrips. Never felt right and led me to a couple of years of not practicing in early adulthood. I was called back however and eventually found my way. I’ve found me craft as well as myself and it’s a wonderful place to be spiritually.

Such great points. I first started practicing witchcraft more than 40 years ago. I say “first started” because I’ve restarted several times. As my life has changed, my path has changed, too, and I’ve been a beginner at something or everything just about forever. The life-long journey advice really hit home for me. If you’re always learning, you’ll always be beginning something, and I think that’s at the heart of living life as an adventure. The journey is the doing.
Regarding closed practices, I avoid them for two reasons: Either they are exclusive groups that maintain secrecy and separation, and that might work for some people, but it’s not my scene. I don't dig exclusivity, in witchcraft or anything else, honestly. Or else the practices are someone else’s cultural tradition, and I want to respect them enough not to do their thing without their invitation. Being an American and from NYC, I come from a multicultural society, so if I feel a connection with a type of practice or a deity or spirit, I will work with them, but in my own way. I won't imitate their mother culture's rituals or language unless I am properly educated and welcomed into it. That's how I approach things.

Appropriation is a big topic. I'm from multiple cultures and I like to do ancestor type work, but because I have no teacher or other means to learn how to ancestor work, I'll seek guidance from others traditions to help guide me. Again, if you don't want to put barriers, share YOUR practices, but if other communities have boundaries we should respect them. it's the respectful think to do 😅 if you have ancestors in those communities you can access those practices, it’s not close to you! But research, maybe you need to be initiated to practice, maybe you need to study certain things, maybe you need to find an elder that can initiate you and mentor you. I think part of it is to learn these things so you don’t risk doing something that would be disrespectful to your ancestors, or simply doing things you might be getting from other communities that simply don’t resonate with them, making it harder for you to connect, because it’s not all the same, especially to our ancestors. When to start practicing spells
My answer is when you have the right mindset towards the way things work.
Not everything will work in your favor as you want it.
Two. Faith is the basis of everything, faith in yourself and your own work. Faith is what allows you to be determined.

I've been in and out of practicing over the years but now I'm fully in. I've learned so much over the years but I love how we still learn pretty much forever - but the one thing that's super important is INTENTION. Its unique to each witch and is the foundation of literally everything!

I consider myself a baby witch, I've had my own altars for years and have always had a connection to the natural. I dabble in rituals where I have guidance beforehand from a local shop I trust and am thankful to live in a place that allows such shops to exist. I'm finally accepting that I'm ready to learn past my intuition.
Past this, I agree that INTENTION is very important. Growing up in conservative Christian areas of the US, the word "faith" is a very harsh and controlling word to me. It's a big reason why avoided diving into witchcraft because I have my own beliefs and any sense of organized religion brings be back to the oppression of being the outsider, not free to express my own thoughts or feelings. Again, this is my journey, but I think it is important for people to separate the common phrases used by organized religions that inflict harm on others. This is my opinion and is not meant to bring harm, but I want some awareness around it. Especially since that word itself was used against me in my youth.

Yes, I'm a 66yr old newbie to witchcraft. I've had signs all my life but being a single mom kept me busy. Now I'm retired. And kept busy with crafts and grandchildren.
I adopted an 8yr. old cat from a shelter. I didn't know until I signed her papers, that her name was Minerva. She was my soul mate. I say was because she passed away from cancer. I see her sitting by her burial site in my backyard waiting for me.
One day my oldest daughter (age 42) told me that I'm ignoring a calling.
So, I made an alter and the first attempt I started meditation, Minerva came through!!! I was SO surprised. She handed me a green stone and told me to continue and that she would be with me.
Every time I meditate, someone else comes through. Archangel Michael blew me away. I broke out in tears upon awakening.
Hecate is beautiful and peaceful with a smile to light the world.
I listen to your RUclips. I know nothing other than deities. It surely takes a LOT of energy. I am physically and mentally exhausted afterwards. I have sensations of nosebleeds but it doesn't actually happen. I'm I OK? Is what I'm doing OK?

One of my other favorite RUclipsrs, Hearth Witch, shares a differing opinion that beginner witches should *not* necessarily jump into spell work, but that they should first start with the basics like centering, grounding, visualization, etc. before they attempt any spells. I really enjoy your videos and I think you're wonderful, but I think the discussion around exploring "closed practices" should recognize that it's not always simply appropriation. What about people like me who only know that they're from somewhere in Western Europe? Should we not practice for fear of going where we're not allowed? Not to mention people who are adopted and have no clue what their ethic background is. More than this, though, hearing how much our practice is all about what resonates with us and that it should be uniquely what works for us, but also being told that we can't look outside of our own culture is confusing and feels like a contradiction. No disrespect to you or your opinion at all, I just feel like it's more complicated. People have been moving around and adopting new ideas for thousands of years. How do I understand where I'm allowed? I appreciate listening to your thoughts always, though.

I appreciate your comment and I am not the right person to speak on this matter in depth as I am not personally from a cultural background that has dealt with backlash or difficulties but what I can say is that there's a big difference between appreciation and appropriation. There are often ways to learn from and work with understandings of other cultures without causing harm to them or appropriating them. There's a big reason why certain practices are closed and that's something that should be respected and with a bit of research into them it's easy to understand why. Each closed practice is closed for different reasons but it's usually because it's deeply harming to the culture still practicing when people outside of the culture to come in and take their practices on as their own. At the end of the day though it's really just about respecting those who are saying that their practices need to remain their own as a means of preservation to their practice or culture and it's not really for us to argue

I find this really interesting as an Irish person when I see people talking about Samhain, Bealtaine, Lúnasa etc. which come from my culture (did you know all of these words are in Irish, our original language? : ) ). I see a lot of my culture being appropriated, particularly by English and American Witches. They don't even spend the few seconds it takes to learn how to pronounce the previously mentioned words, let alone learn about our history and where these festivals etc. come from. It can be especially hurtful when English Witches do it considering how our language & culture have been damaged (and almost erased in the case of our language, Gaeilge) by their ancestors. Sometimes it seems only some cultures deserve respect and not others. Just my rambling thoughts on the subject.

If you need any help with the Irish pronounciation I will gladly oblige 😊 I just feel like our former colonisers should at the very least show some respect to the language they forced us to stop speaking if they are going to be appropriating our culture. And this can be applied to so many countries and cultures.

American “baby witch” here: I have Irish ancestry, and I would much rather learn about the folk practices of my ancestors. For examples, using only herbs indigenous to Ireland for spells (or herbs I grow in my garden). I don’t want to offend or appropriate from a culture I don’t have a connection to. As of now, I don’t celebrate the holy days you mentioned, but would like to learn more (especially how to correctly pronounce them). Do you know any good sources for learning more about Irish folk magic and other traditions?

@@SunflowerHeliotrope sorry but its the general consensus here in the "Old world" that you stop counting as Irish/scottish ect (I myself being scottish) after your family has been in America for more than a generation. Celtic traditions are an open practice so you're still welcome to partake in them and use them in your practice, but you're unlikely to get friendly looks if you conduct yourself as anything other than an American.

Hello my name is Sven. I am a 51 soon to be 52 yr old Bisexual man. I just wanted to say this channel has amazing advice and is a very common sense driven approach to learn witchcraft. As soon as I can I want to become a Patreon. (Which will be my next paycheck). I am getting back into the craft after falling into the pitfalls you discussed in your vod's. I wanted to restart on my 52nd birthday, a present to myself. Thank you for having these VOD's

    Great video!
It took us a while to figure out that although the Egyptians had great rituals, they just *might* not be what we need in 2022.
Also: cultural appropriation is NEVER ok. Take inspiration from it, but always work with what is good for *you* !

I'm so so glad that you mentioned closed practices and leaving them alone. I've been a longtime lurker of the witchcraft community and part of my hesitancy in getting involved has been the overwhelming presence of appropriation and witches who don't care and won't listen to marginalized voices. this video was so reassuring!

    • @thatguyron7776

It's only against religion because people made it that way. While there ARE dangerous aspects to witchcraft, the danger lies in more complex witchcraft such as Ceremonial Magic, or Goetia. Outside of those? Nope. Witchcraft isn't dangerous.

Trick to deities is too let them come to you, every deity I have worked with came to me offering assistance.. sometimes threw dreams, pictures, divination and tarot/oracle cards, sometimes animals (you will feel it).. animal totems as well, we gotta understand that we do not control spirits and such and that they will often show up when you need them even if you didn’t realize you needed them at the moment. Good to understand closed practices, but if you feel the call you should honour that call, of course do your research first and for most.

I so appreciate that you discuss altering spells to make them your own. It took me a long time to understand that magick is intention made manifest... and that all the gear, the herbs, candles, colors, and spellwork..etc... are vehicles to help manifest intention. Years ago, I remember being so frustrated trying to cast a circle in traditional way.... and then something occurred to me.... I could do the very same thing.. but in my own way... understanding that it's more about calling upon the elements and directions... while setting intention. Since then I made my own path (something I do in general in my life in many ways)... and my practice has come to mean so much more to me... and is far more successful because it's mine and made by me. Honestly, I cannot think of anything more personal and unique than one's spiritual path. Thank you for your wonderful videos~

I'm not so sure about this idea of not appropriating practices from the traditions of other cultures. What can we do, only stick to our own culture, even if it has no traditions in witchcraft?
Any other religion like Buddhist, Christian, Taoist, Hindu, Muslim etc. has no ethnic boundaries, so why should there be with witchcraft?
Personally, I think it's a shame to hide and hoard our knowledge and traditions. All cultures are based on thousands of years of evolving by borrowing ideas from other cultures; they do not form in a vacuum. Even the Hindu and Nordic (Odin etc) faiths are based in the same spiritual tradition, having split around 5,000-6,000 years ago.
I think the best thing we can do for humanity is to share our insights, not keep each other segregated.

While I understand the baseline of “cultural appropriation” and respect that fully - I do see this widely spread.. however - on another spectrum - My belief system includes the idea of reincarnation and i personally feel very deeply connected and a deep reverence for practices that are in cultures outside of the one I was born into in this lifetime. Ultimately it is a soul journey and the soul can be very loud - when you know something is meant for you - you can feel it deep in your bones.

Yes to labelling. You don't need to label your practice. You can just be a witch or pagan or whatever. One day down the road you may identify with a certain practice. But just get started and enjoy the process.

As a practicing witch I find it helps when you take stuff from your heritage or where you come from. I come from Irish decent as my mother was Irish, I take those practices and my culture when I’m practicing. My father can from Germany and although there is less abundant witch practice there I do study and read about it.

Affirmations are something you tell yourself over and over and over until you believe it. Like "I am lovable and deserve to be loved.". Do you believe your own voice in your native language more than you do when you say it in English? That's the question to ask yourself. Which language do you personally accept more? Use that one.

Thank you for making these videos. I am guilty of being a perfectionist. I have recently adopted the mantra that "Perfection is the Enemy of Good." I have called myself a "lazy Witch" for many years. I think I'm actually paralyzed that my practice won't be perfect. When I practice a spell or try something new, it works, I have no doubt in that, but I still shy away from new things. I also make things entirely too complicated, and it is overwhelming to the point that I just don't do it, and then I feel ashamed that I'm not stacking up. Actually, I can add the last paragraph to every aspect of my life. Best bit of self-discovery ever! Thank you for giving me permission to be me, in my Craft, and the rest of my life!

I only wish I have learned about rootwork, Ancestral honor, wild witchiness and being more comfortable with my own family paths. I've been on the path for more than 20 years. Always learn-never stop. Shadow work is important but do so with CAUTION or guidance. Agree with the closed practices. Even though I have Native bloodlines, I've no idea which tribe so until called by Spirit or I find out what family side, I keep that free of my magicks. Good luck all. Practices always.

I think what you are doing is very important and useful to the community as a whole, it's important for people to understand how natural and normal spiritual expression can be without all the stigma and tropes handed down by religious ties.
We do these things everyday in every way because it brings joy and a sense of closeness with the over soul, just like the teachings of native peoples across the world we are all connected by this sacred bond, a bond of humanity and love of our brothers and sisters, whether you call it "magik" or expression of the will, it's of little consequence blessings to all and blessings to you for spreading useful information ❤️
