    I went back and forth between the m3 pro 14 inch and the 15 inch M3 air. I tried them both and this is the conclusion I came to. Yes the screen is better on the pro but you don't notice it unless they are right next to each other. I hear people say that the speakers are better on the pro but not by much to be honest. I actually didn't care for the pro speakers. The pro is better at almost anything but feel. The pro felt cheap in my hand and typing is horrible. If you have big hands the edges dig in your wrist and it bothers. Screen size makes a huge difference. The 15 inch makes you want to be in front of it. It's also light. Yes, you do feel the weight difference especially while you're holding it in your hand. Unless you are really rendering a ton of videos and yo need color accuracy to be at its best go for the pro, but for most of us, the AIR is it. It feels amazing in your hands and holding it makes you want to keep with you at all times. Once you use the 15 inch air you don't want anything else. I created a million reasons why I needed the pro and ultimately stood with the 15 inch air 16/512. Im super happy!

    The M2 15 inch air I have it for over 5+ months now close to a year and it’s an absolute beast! I only maxed out the RAM to 24gb ram with 256gb SSD cause i don’t really see a difference with the speeds and I always don’t mind the waiting on the downloads anyway since I’m doing something else to keep me busy. Overall, I’m very satisfied with it! Use multiple tabs, have photoshop open while watching a stream or RUclips, pretty much have multiple applications open and the 24gb ram REALLY helps to not wear out the SSD swap or MacBook itself, absolute powerful machine!

    Still have my m1 13" Mac Book Pro which is fantastic for taking on vacation and trips. Wanted a new M3 model and went with the 15" Air (16GB, 512 storage), in retrospect now reading reviews on the 14" M3 Mac Book Pro and thinking for the extra $100, I'm gaining more than I'd be loosing and thinking of swapping for a 14" Pro. But I love the thin form factor and the 15" screen so I'm really on the fence... I don't care about the extra ports, but The two leading features of the Pro model I like are the ability to use the laptop screen and two additional monitors (3 in total) and that huge upgrade on the screen.

    Great that dual monitor support was brought to the MacBook Air and will be coming to the base m3 macbook pro. I understand the software limitations of not being able to run two monitors and the built in display at the same time, but why must the lid be closed? I own an apple vision pro and when I use mac virtual display it blacks out my screen but I can keep using the trackpad and keyboard. Why not do the same thing for the m3 air and pro? Black out the laptop screen if connected to two external monitors but don't require the lid to be closed. That way people can still use the keyboard and trackpad and don't need to get an external keyboard and mouse. Seems like an easy software change.

    Getting the m3 air with 1 tb and 16 gb ram is not very far away, I think around $200 some dollars from m3 pro configuration refurbished (also 1 tb and 18 gb) which just gives you so much more.
    And the display isn’t just a little bit different, it’s a world away, in my opinion, for me. Watch a 4 k travel video, last I looked up was Tahiti, and it was such a huge difference in clarity, like everything looked more alive and super vivid. Air looks like almost 2d vs pro that looks like better than life.
    But if you never bother to look side by side or check out both, for image quality, or don’t care for image quality, it’s fine either way, and air might be better for those more light sensitive or eye sensitive. I wish I could post the side by side photo I took, even on that you can see it’s super different.
    But I was gonna get the 15” air specked up, and live limitations (less powerful, worse speakers, probably more delicate if dropped/mishandled), till I compared the displays… and everyday of viewing, I suppose I value that experience of beauty. Plus though I don’t do it all day long, or everyday, I want to edit large raw images and use many layers to make new art. I was trying to get away with a lighter machine with bigger screen for once from apple but seems I may still go for the pro.
    Thx for review though and I think it probably is a great choice for most people!

    • @andyH_England
      @andyH_England 7 месяцев назад +1

      For many light users, the base 15-inch is the sensible choice. I have been using 8GB/256GB for 3.5 years with an MB Pro 13 M1, and it has been perfect with no need for more RAM, and I only use 40-50GB of storage. When the deals arrive in a couple of months and we get £150-200 off then the M3 MB Air 15-inch base will be a bargain. But even at £1300, it is cheaper than many Windows alternatives.

      Great comment and a very valid argument. Must say I was very convinced a midnight m3 Air with added ram was the way to go. Went a to a store found the greasy midnight blue then there was a this 14” silver m3 pro looked amazing and clean. The MacBook air screen seems very flimsy compared to the pro. Since I had issues with my screen before and want something that could last. Taking into consideration spec’ing up the air is so close priced to a m3 pro. In my case I would go from 13” to 14” for very little price difference. Only downside is the slightly higher price compared to based air model and added weight but use it more at home than traveling. Didn’t have the opportunity to see the difference in screen quality side my side in the store.

    My take is that a maxed out M3 15” MacBook Air with 24 g ram the highest processor and video selection with a 2 tb ssd is 2500 $ no small amount of money. Now I really want the mbpro16” maxed out but thats over 5300$ and I just can’t justify it. Mostly because I refuse to pay more than about $2500 for any laptop, IPad, personally built PC. Mostly we all know we have to pay the Apple tax and I still have my mid 2015 16gb ram with the upgraded amd video card and it came with base 512mb ssd. I’ve since upgraded it to 2TB ssd but Apple refuses to update the OS because of my “non standard drive) since it still works and does what I need it to do on occasion I’m keeping it. I have it docked and use it more like a desktop. Since I’m used to the 15” screen I’m ok with an air at 15” don’t like only 2 ports as my old near 10yo hardware runs its screen and 2 dell 27” monitors just fine. I’ve replaced the batteries in it and it’s time for an upgrade. If Apple wasn’t so greedy I’d buy more stuff but they seem to only want to cater to the people making over 150K a year. Not under like us blue collar workers. I’ll have to save up for the 3K for my new air, if I can get my old laptop to do some specific music stuff I’m looking to do in then I’ll just put off buying new stuff for longer.

    I would so much want the Air with a mini-led screen. I don't understand why they refuse to make one. I would be willing to pay for it. "Best for AI" is a bold claim. But think about it. It has now faster circuitry for on-board AI processing, and this is great for light AI tasks like speech recognition, photo editing, and such things. The "real" AI revolution that is currently happening (think ChatGPT, AI generated images and video...) are so insanely ressource-intensive, that they can't run on a Notebook anyway. They run in the cloud, and the neural cores of the M3 don't help them at all, no matter how fast they are.

      We have a compare coming soon! The M3 Air is going to be the best laptop for anybody, but maybe not quite for everybody. The updates really close the gap between the Pro and the non-pro lines for most people. If you need the increased horsepower or added connectivity of the Pro line, then you probably already know who you are. That makes the M3 Air a super easy default recommendation for anybody 🙂

    So will this handle multi cam video editing of an hour long video? 2 4k and 3 1080 files?

    • @valuemastery
      @valuemastery 7 месяцев назад

      Yes, it will easily handle the editing part, as long as your video project does not require transcoding of files or extensive background effects rendering while editing (it will quickly throttle your M3, active cooling would be better here, but you can always do transcoding offline if needed). The hardware video decoding support of the M3 should easily handle almost any video format you throw at it in real time, so transcoding would be rarely needed, just edit using the full files. I even did this on my M1 Mac Mini, and it was just as fast as my 8-core Intel i9 MacBook Pro. Export of the final video is of course another story. Yes, it can handle this as well, but be prepared for it to take much longer than on an actively cooled M3 or even a M3 Pro/Max with a lot more graphics cores. They will do the job MUCH faster.
      Get 10 graphics cores, at least 16 Gigs of RAM and as much storage as you need for your projects, and you're ready to go.
      Just for reference, I'm doing video editing as well, and I ordered a 13 inch M3 MBA, 24 GB RAM, 2 TB SSD. Don't need the bigger screen since I'm mostly at the desk with two 27-inch monitors. But when I need to travel, it's ultraportable and has enough storage to have all my current projects with me, without me having to fiddle around with external storage.

      @@pshimmons If you had a 2016 MacBook Pro, you'll be surprised by the performance of the M3. I'm replacing a 2019 maxed out Macbook Pro with it. In the meantime, I got a M1 Mac Mini which in most cases outperformed my 2019 MacBook Pro. However, the Mac Mini has active cooling. But benchmarks have shown that a passively cooled, throttled M3 can be as fast as an actively cooled M1. So, I expect no problems here. Next year, I might go for an M3 Max Mac Studio to complement my new MBA, just for doing longer rendering tasks.

    The new MBA M3 is not really an upgrade. What has been offered is an insult to any customer. The base model ist with 8GB RAM and 256SSD is sickening and is no longer a standard. The M3 with a so-called 20% performance increase is not worth mentioning. You won't feel it when will you have 20% more power for a fraction of second. The dual screen set up is just ridiculous. With Windows PC you are able to use multiple screens for at least a decade.
    I went for a MBA M2 15GB and 256SSD plus an external 1TB SSD because I am not insane enough to throw money at Apple.

    The M2 MacBook Air is a better deal. Also, I am happy with my M1 MacBook Pro.
