  • Ask any jazz pianist to recommend a book to learn jazz piano, and the number one book that gets recommended is The Jazz Piano Book by Mark Levine.
But this book is seriously confusing for jazz beginners- I'm here to guide you through this really confusing book!
In this video, I go through chapter 3. I cover:
    - Three-Note Voicings/ shells
    - Voice leading
    - How to play from the lead sheet "Just Friends" in the book
    - Why the 'suggested tunes to work on' is full of terrible choices for beginners
    - The tunes I recommend to work on at this level come from The Real Book Vol I:
. All the Things You Are
    . The Girl From Ipanema
    .How High The Moon
    - I guide you through 2 more advanced chords in All The Things You Are from the book above so you can play the whole song
    - Chapter 3 doesn't give you quite enough to be able to start most jazz songs- you need the chords from Chapter 5 as well!
    - Watch out for ties in the melody when changing chords
    - Watch out for chord symbols in lead sheets that don't line up properly with where they are supposed to be- this is a common issue!
    - Importance of absolutely knowing all the scale degrees of every note as you're playing- no shortcuts!
You can download a sheet of foundational reference information that I give to my beginner students that will help you with these beginning chapters here (and it also contains translations of British- American music terms)

Strong classical background (about 10 years of study dating back to 30 years ago), I am now 53 and getting into the Mark Levine's book. Just found your channel, and IT IS very helpful. Thank you for spending your time doing these videos!

Massively helpful!! Really hope you continue the series. Classically trained for a decade as a kid and just started learning jazz, haven't found a teacher yet and picked up this book. even with my knowledge not a great book, have found youtube to be more helpful

Honestly, if you're worried about fake books violating copyright or the chords in fake books being too complex, forget about reading from actual fake books for the time being. Begin with the melody of folk songs like Greensleeves or Auld Lang Syne, children's songs like Mary Had a Little Lamb, traditional pop songs before the jazz era like Alexander's Ragtime Band, or classical pieces with simple melodies like Johannes Brahm's Wiegenlied, and then convert the underlying chords in the chord progression, usually only triads, into their corresponding diatonic seventh chords and write it on the sheet music for the piece. You've just de facto created your own lead sheet for the piece.

Well yes in some ways I agree with you- but IMO this isn't very practical for somebody at the beginning of their journey into the jazz world

Great! I tried doing Levine alone, no luck. Has chapter 5 come out yet?

I'm planning it soon- it's particularly tricky to clarify all the confusion and bad structure of chapter 4 first though!!
