ZZ Top are one of America's greatest treasures. The albums they put out in the 80s are as great as those they put out in the 70s, in fact 'Eliminator' is an awesome album regardless of era it was released in. The follow up album 'Afterburner' was another great ZZ Top album. And those videos they put out in the 80s were some of the best videos of the golden era of MTV.

I was so glad to be able to see ZZ Top in concert a couple years ago. They are such skilled entertainers, old school. The show was simple, just 3 guys on stage. That's all they needed, no flash, no smoke, no fire. Just 3 dudes with so much style and class. All those moves you see them doing in the videos they do them on stage. The flashiest part of the show were the matching rhinestone jackets they were wearing.

ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons has had a long life in music. Born and raised in a musical family just outside of Houston, TX, he started down the road of becoming a pro musician in the late 1950s at only seven years old, and by 14 had already studied percussion under Tito Puente and had gotten into electric guitar. He was heavily influenced by black music, especially the electric blues players and boogie bands of the time, before eventually being influenced by the more psychedelic blues/rock of Texas bands like the 13th Floor Elevators in 1960s, which is how he eventually met and toured with Jimi Hendrix. He and his bandmates in ZZ Top never forgot their blues/boogie roots though, and the responsibility to always entertain the audience. That's where the sense of humor and fun comes in, along with the little coordinated dance moves they incorporated in their live shows and videos. Those elements were a nod to those that came before them from the blues/boogie to Motown and beyond.

Noted on a previous reaction that when I went camping as a kid in the early 1960's we could get the signal (500,000 watts from 40 feet inside the Mexican border to evade power limits) we'd get Wolfman Jack spinnin' the disks on AM radio. Full of static, faded in and out, best damned music from outside the "record industry". Early pirate radio! If you heard it on the X, you heard what real music was goin' down and were an early insider.

Please react to 1970’s ZZ Top- Heard it on the X, Brown Sugar, Just Got Paid, Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers, Tush, Waitin on the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago, Blue Jeans Blues. No 80’s synthesizers just awesome Blues/Rock.

That's absolutely true, this song, even despite the fact that it was released 30+years ago, is still very relevant
And it's also very true that 'A Sharp Dressed Man' does catch a lot of attention from the ladies and vice versa

In his touring days, Jimi Hendrix met up with a "little ole band from Texas" and played shows all over the state. Jimi till his dying day said that billy was not only his favorite guitarist but was also his favorite person.

I was lucky enough to be around when MTV launched. I just started college and would spend HOURS just staring at the TV. As all these bands tried to figure out how to use this new platform, ZZ Top did a great job of putting out some fun videos during that time. Very fond memories!!

ZZ Top practices or used to practice in the warehouses at the end of my neighborhood.
My dad used to be a cop, and he used to get called over there in the middle of the night to investigate noise complaints. He'd wander in and find ZZ Top jamming at like 3am.
I met Billy Gibbons at the Men's Warehouse one day when I was getting a suit for my buddy's wedding.
Bizarrely, he said he didn't have a suit, and he needed one to go on some talk show (I think he said Conan O'Brien?) the next night.
Super chill dude. He hung out and chatted with us while we were all waiting for the MW employees to figure the suits out.

In the late 70's before ZZtop got record label famous they came from the neighboring state Texas and played for free at the high school football field for three years. The last year they did that they played the song Cheap Sun Glasses.
