Wow, love this recipe, thank you so much for sharing. I too find I am allergic to a lot of ingredients in hair products so look forward to trying this.
Thank you for sharing your tutorial I know your way is better because I was putting water first then guar gum which ended up being lumpy thanks for sharing
Generally, bleached hair need lots of moisture and protein, but to be sure of what your hair needs take my FRIZZ QUIZ - Blog www.athenapadilla.com/post/protein-moisture-balance-test-frizz-quiz-results-best-products-for-frizzy-hair If you need more moisture in your product the easiest way to adjust this is by adding 1-2 drops of oil per handful of product on the days that your hair needs extra moisture. A great healing oil that provides deep moisture is olive oil. And if your hair needs protein then I highly suggest my NoFrizz10 Naturals Concentrated Protein Drops. You can add 1-5 drops to a handful of guar gum gel in your hand as you apply product depending on your wet stretch test results and what your hair needs on any given day. If you find that you need it everyday then you can add the oil to the bottle and won't need to adjust preservative as long as you add the rate I'm suggesting. The protein drops already have a preservative so no need to adjust preservative when added to products.
Hi, I just watched your video👍. Thanks a great deal. Can I use glycerin to dissolve the guar gum?( to also have the benefit of a humectant) And still add that quantity of preservative? Secondly, can I use aloe Vera liquid instead of distilled water? Thanks in advance 😗
You know what, I was thinking about this and I believe I was mistaken. Glycerin is a water based product and so I don't think it will mix easily with the guar gum powder. The guar gum only dissolves with an oil or oil type ingredient. Glycerin, even though a moisturizer, is not an oil. I got confused in my mind on that for a sec. I haven't tried mixing it with glycerin yet though. Did you try it?
I purchased some Guar Gel from you but have been using it the wrong way.🥴 I have no problem mixing my own at home and will give it a try. I particularly like the unscented version because I am trying to minimize scents and essential oils in cosmetic products. Do I like the way scented products smell? You bet, but they can lead to sensitivity over time and I already have some scalp issues. Can I use a hand mixer with beaters instead of the Kitchenaid style shown in the video? Thank you for sharing, Athena.
Hi. Ok. Thanks for letting us know. Regular kitchen beaters do ok. It says to do that in the old pink chart recipe, and I used to do it that way all the time, especially when I made small batches, so yes. And since you'll put it through a strainer anyway, you won't have any problems. Think of it this way, if you do get any lumps, the lumps are a portion of the guar gum powder and possibly preservative, that end up getting removed. The remaining preservative will be enough to keep the product shelf stable so no worries there. And the product may not set up as thick as you like. So the easiest thing to do is to just sprinkle a little more guar gum and re-mix until you get the consistency you want.
Just remember that this guar gum gel contains no oils or butters or conditioners, so if used alone without at least a leave-in conditioner you may notice that hair is dry. This gel does not dry out hair though, it is just a very light moisture product. If your hair needs extra moisture, then by all means, use this layered or mixed with creams and stylers. It's great for clumping curls, smoothing, and adding shine. It's like water for the hair but with out the frizz!
I generally only put about 2-3 drops of essential oil in 8oz of guar gum gel. I have used all varieties to make really fun new fragrances. Vanilla orange is nice.
Does it flake. I have used hydrolyzed guar for years for the conditioning properties and slip it adds to my less expensive deep conditioners. Never tried as gel.
It is very rare that I get any flaking with this gel. It does very well. It's generally pretty difficult to get too much but it is suggested to use on wet hair. Also, it reactivates with water very well on subsequent days so usually, no extra product for refreshing is needed.
It doesn't flake like typical hair gel. If too much is applied to the hair you may see very fine powdery release when you scrunch out the crunch, but hair is left shiny with no noticable flakes. This is one of my top selling products. Many repeat buyers who can't live without it! :)
Yes, xanthan gum sets up a bit thicker. Make using the same steps that I suggest by starting with the preservative or oil and the powder, dissolve that, then add the water, and mix with a stick blender very well. *Hint, let your xanthan gum mixture set for 10 minutes before mixing.
Generally, a pre poo would provide more moisture than this. If you add your own oils to it though, it would do a great job at preventing moisture loss during shampooing.
Vitamin E is not nearly strong enough for a preservative. It will go rancid in a couple of days without any preservative, so definitely keep it in the fridge to preserve longer!
For line seed gel do you mean flaxseed gel? The differences between guar gum gel and Flaxseed gel are many Guar gum gel has a very slippery wet feel to the consistency where flaxseed gel is gooey and a bit thicker in consistency. I would say that flaxseed gel may provide a little more hold and the Omega 3 that the guar gum gel does not have. I can say that when I compared then on my hair that the guar gum gel actually provided more curl than the flaxseed gel for me. Guar gum gel is more suited as a primer to be used very liberally without weighting down the hair and providing water into the hair to get that squishy sound when scrunching and to get that seaweed look.
It can work to dilute any product and to add slip. and besides being used as a lightweight hair gel and to help clump curls, It can also work well to mix with serums for the face.
No because it would be very hard to wash off hair and be too heavy. It does however, mix well with creams or stylers of any kind. So you're welcome to try.
It doesn't matter if you add cream or gel first, but just make sure that both are already emulsified finished products. Then just stir or blend then into the finished guitar gum gel. For a curl cream I suggest 1 part cream to 3 parts gel. (The guar gum is already a gel so if you think you need to add a "Styler" then consider the purpose of that... Is it to increase hold? Then add sugar and honey instead. Is it to add moisture, then add a couple drops of oil. Etc. Just be sure that anything you add has been accommodated for the proper preservative.) Note, if you mix guar gum gel with any prepared product, it will dilute the prepared product. Which can be very useful in cases where you have a product that is too heavy for your hair!
Athena Padilla I want to make an all natural conductive gel. I’m willing to refrigerate it because I’m too cheap to purchase the preservative. I also don’t have a nice stick mixer so I said vitamix blender. I like your recipe! I’m currently using aloe, glycerine and avocado oil for my hair concoction. 🦋

1 cup water (add last), 1/2 tsp optiphen, 1/2 tsp guar gum. Most do not show us the proportions. So helpful. Thank you so much for your help.

Very nice tutorial. I add a humectant to mine and glad you love your curls. Curls are not kinks but Beautiful versatile hair and I love mine

You can add pectin or Arabic gum for more hold
If required and replace the water content with marshmallow root tea
Sure
@@AthenaPadilla it’s a great product nice and lightweight , a lot of products are too heavy for my curls thanks

Glycerin is an option, yes, but it is not a preservative.
And yes, if you prefer to use aloe instead of water that'll also work very well. You could use any kind of hydrosol as well.
FYI, The shelf life with aloe will be lower. Please use a preservative or store in the fridge.

@@AthenaPadilla I've tried it with equal parts glycerin and guar gum with 8oz water, it came out perfect for my hair type.
Can u tell me when should we use this
As a gel or styler. Preferable over or with leave in conditioner.

Hi dear I just wanna make sure your products are cg friendly or not ? Thxxx 😊
Yes, they are CG friendly❤️
Yes, I only make curly girl approved hair products.
Hi, do you know if over ussge of this can damage the hair?
I have had customers using this product faithfully for many years without any problems. It is very gentle and safe.

Which essential oils have you put in there in the past?
I generally only put about 2-3 drops of essential oil in 8oz of guar gum gel. I have used all varieties to make really fun new fragrances. Vanilla orange is nice.
Where do you get your optfen?
I buy my Optiphen on Amazon.
Does it flake. I have used hydrolyzed guar for years for the conditioning properties and slip it adds to my less expensive deep conditioners. Never tried as gel.

Nice
What stops it from flaking? Because guar gum flakes terribly

Can I use Xanthan gum instead?
Yes, xanthan gum sets up a bit thicker. Make using the same steps that I suggest by starting with the preservative or oil and the powder, dissolve that, then add the water, and mix with a stick blender very well. *Hint, let your xanthan gum mixture set for 10 minutes before mixing.
Thank you!
Does it have to be distilled water or can it be filtered water? I have a whole house water filtration system..
Either is fine.
What the preservative What is the shelf life?
could i use this as a conditioner/pre poo instead as a leave in?
Generally, a pre poo would provide more moisture than this. If you add your own oils to it though, it would do a great job at preventing moisture loss during shampooing.
Hello. If I use vitamin E as preservative is it good or should I keep in fridge?
Vitamin E is not nearly strong enough for a preservative. It will go rancid in a couple of days without any preservative, so definitely keep it in the fridge to preserve longer!
@@AthenaPadilla ok thank you. can part of it be freezed?
Yes, freezing is fine.
Vitamin E is not a.preservative it's an antioxidant
After shampoo as conditioner
Or after once hair dries
It is to be used after shampoo and conditioner as a light weight gel or primer. It is also great to mix with other creams and stylers.
Can i use it as conditioner after shampoo and rinse it off
How many mins should i leave on my hair
Is 5 mins enough
No, it won't do anything if you rinse it right off.
Hey, what's the difference between this guar gum gel and line seed gel? :)

Can this be used as a body wash?
This can be used as a base for a cleanser if you add cleansing agents but by itself it is not a cleanser, no.
It can work to dilute any product and to add slip. and besides being used as a lightweight hair gel and to help clump curls, It can also work well to mix with serums for the face.
Isnt.preservative to be measured by weight ?
Yes, but in this recipe for you I have already figured out the teaspoon ratio so that it is easier for people without a scale.
@@AthenaPadilla ok understood
