Used to be one like it on US 40 over the Missouri River at Boonville, MO. Blown up in 2001 when a new bridge was built. The way people drive (at 70 mph) on the narrow I-24 bridge makes it just about as scary.
I'm a creeper. I CREEP across those big ole steel bridges slowly because I'm scared out of my mind of hitting someone being that close to them. OH HELL NO!!!!!!!!
I drove semis across those bridges at nite, 28yrs ago, when I was a rookie. Those bridges are only as dangerous as the people who drive across them, but as a long time CDL, I haven't had to drive a big rig across them for a long time, and I don't miss it.
THAT WAS ALMOST AS NERVE WRACKING AS THE TIME THAT MY SCHOOL CHOIR& I HAD TO TRAVEL FROM HAMMOND, LOUISANA TO NEW ORLEANS. 50 MILES OF NOTHING BUT BRIDGE AND BAYOU COUNTRY. OUR TOUR BUS DRIVER MUST OF HAD NERVES OF STEEL BECAUSE AFTER ABOUT 10 MINUTES OF THIS IT WAS STARTING TO GET SCREW WITH MY HEAD.
That's a piece of cake, those who never crossed the Huey p Long Bridge in New Orleans when a train was rolling over it "before" they widened it really missed something scary.
This bridge is like the old bridge connecting Gulfport, IL to Burlington, IA... it was replaced by a much nicer and safer one about 30 yrs ago... give or take. When traffic got backed up due to construction on Highway 34, cars and semis going in both directions would sit on the bridge for half hour or more... And the more semis, the more the bridge would sway!! Fun times!!
Oh Lord, that thing was spooky! And the steep grade leading the top and no room for error on the sides, at least it was southbound only on that really old bridge.
Bridges from back in the days when the country had plenty of 'erector sets'. The early versions of Legos. They came around at about the same time as Lincoln Logs. I was about 4 years old when we drove over this bridge when my Dad was getting transferred from Virginia to the Phillippine Islands - Clark AFB back then. I thought it was a really cool bridge. When we got to the other side we stopped for breakfast. That was when we found that we made a wrong turn and had to go back over it again. It was lucky we were hungry.
The old bridge to Ledbetter isn't much better. It's in the response district for my old volunteer fire department & we'd be nervous crossing that for mutual aid with Ledbetter.
You're kidding right? I mean Illinois is a very scary place bridge or not. Lived here all my life. But have you SEEN any of those videos with the worst bridges in the world??? No to the no on most of them. I would have to rent a boat lol. Or go around even if it was miles to find another crossing. Or just swim...well I'd definitely drown then. Or be eaten by a large carp. Or a 500lb 200yr old bottom feeding catfish with 12ft long whiskers under this one. Some of the damn things have visible HOLES in them.😵🌉 Thanks for the info. I had no idea we were connected to Texas by way of THAT THING. LOL🙏🕊️😉 Serious shite tho. Infrastructure is falling down all over the world. We don't even need a quake here. Happy Labor Day anyone who celebrates. Stay safe out there.
An even scarier bridge is Michigan's Mackinac Bridge on I75 going over the Straits of Mackinac from the lower peninsula to Michigan's upper peninsula. It's over 5 miles long and the grating is ever more nerve wracking. And you are over 150 feet high over the water. You need to try it just once in your life.
I've been across this bridge and I've been across the mackinaw bridge hundreds of times literally I much rather drive across the Mackinaw bridge it is a very safe and well built bridge And it is 199' from midcenter to the water.
No excuse for a bridge like this, completely unsafe and basically unusable in this day and age. First and foremost, there is nowhere to pull over in case of an emergency or breakdown. Additionally, the sides should be shrouded with opaque plastic for those with a fear of heights. This sorry excuse for a bridge should be torn down and replaced with a safer, more user friendly modern bridge.
@@MrOarson hah. My first car was a pickup with 180 degrees of slop in the steering wheel. Rag joint was shot. Wish i still had that truck it was a 1970 DODGE D100 DUDE.
The Interstate 24 bridge is several miles downstream. Mainly locals use this bridge. I drove over it hundreds of times since I was 16 in 1961.
I was about to write Paducah is a close second. What you missed was that long approach from KY. You are committed for a very long time.

Ah the brookport bridge! I crossed that bridge a few years back in a tow truck, back when I worked for Abbott’s towing.
Fine camera work...now I'm seasick.
What’s even scarier the 25mph and the steel grates that messes with the tires.
Good ole Brookport, IL bridge

Cool video. I kept waiting for the theme song and opening credits for 'Taxi' to appear tho 😆
My mom drove school buses across that thing,
Tell her she's a hell of a woman!
Brave lady ♥️🙏♥️
Wow! Your mom must not let anything bother her! A narrow bridge, big bus, and loud kids...no way.
Your mom must have nerves of steel!
I was waiting for the Mothman hanging along the side of the trusses.

Just imagine breaking down in the middle of the bridge!
They actually pay people to drive them in their own cars across the Mighty Mac, and possibly the Chesapeake bridge too.
SOUNDS LIKE A SUPERNATURAL MOTORIZED SWARM OF ENERGY AND
KILLER BEES ALL AROUND
I do remember this bridge, very creepy
The old bridge across the Cooper River in Charleston SC used to scare me.
Oh Lord, that thing was spooky! And the steep grade leading the top and no room for error on the sides, at least it was southbound only on that really old bridge.
Many years ago the lower guardrail wasn't there. Scary gap at the end of the roadway.
I was just thinking that, I never remember that part of the bridge, now it looks way longer
I used to love that bridge it meant we was in Key to visit my aunts and uncles and cousins.

Nowhere in Europe will you ever find a Bridge like this. Old , narrow and dangerous. Poor people in the US.
Gotta love those big Pennsylvania thru trusses.
I rode a mc across this bridge. VERY SLOWLY.
I Crpssed That Many Times In An
18 Wheeler In My Trucking Career
No Problem !!!!!
F. G. D.
The bump tht always make a sound when you go across the bridge...
I just went over this bridge yesterday after 14 hours of driving... It made me very tense 😂
That’s like the Mississippi River Bridge
Riding across the KREAKIEST, NARROWEST bridge in America.

The old Ledbetter bridge is history now. Slid down the bank and has been demolished!

I moved back to Memphis & the Ledbetter bridge made the news down here too
Enjoy some Memphis BBQ for me! Love it!@@doughesson
@@Suncast45 Enjoyed some yesterday, matter of fact.

@@doughesson I'm so jealous! I live in Louisville and there's nothing around here as good! Starnes is worth driving home for LOL!
I'm going to have to double-up on the Ativan.
Have a traffic light on both ends. Every 3 or 5 minutes, allow traffic just one way.
Excellent plan! This thing is dangerous. I like your idea.
Although not as long, but equally dangerous is the Harry (not so) Nice Bridge on RT 301 over the Potomac connecting Virginia and Maryland.......
Why did they ever build a bridge like this?
Jusy drive slow and enjoy the view! I think its a gem of a bridge in american history!
It would be ten times worse on a motorcycle.
Cross the Lewis and Clark bridge from Oregon to Longview Washington
Yeah, over the Columbia River. I think that one might be scarier than the one in Astoria, Or.
@@markusantonio4866 it's pretty narrow in an 18 wheeler
There are other good videos on this bridge..JVidz BROOKPORT BRIDGER

Nah it should be on everyones driving test to get a license. With a stick shift Car Truck Bus.
And just where would you suggest we find the millions of dollars to replace this perfectly usable bridge with the one of your dreams?
