I love Walters ‘attitude’ when he sings. I love Walter anyway, but when he sings it adds another dimension to the music. I wish he had sang more with SD.
I wonder why Walter didn’t sing more! He’s got a great kind of soulful voice! I guess he backed up Donald with harmony in the studio recordings as well! No question his guitar playing is TOPS !!
Hearing Walter sing this is terrific. I remember hearing walter sing live, I think his vocal range, for some reason, did not translate well and seemed to be muddled. But this version is really good.
Jesus Christ! This is Da Best version out there of this song! Walter Becker is beyond incredible, so much energy & determination in his delivery! The band and particularly the ladies also sound on-point here! An absolute treat for music lovers!
coool version. Love the power and drive. fresh snare. And Walter´s singing is kiiler :)))) His voice is so powerful and cool to listen. He drives the band forward. :) I love It. Nice chords. One of my favourite songs on the world. )
Wow, what a gem of a find, for any Steely Dan fan. That solo is just raw and so powerful, along with a very crisp sounding horn section. Love this version.
He had such a unique, cool voice. I love 11 tracks of whack, his solo album. One of the best of all their albums I think. Even though they are all great!
Same basic structure to the tune but changing up the lead vocals and guitar gives it a totally new feel. Walter's voice should have been heard more I guess?
Notice how the recorded version was reworked. Much soul was lost in transition and let’s be frank: this was Becker’s song and he delivered it with much more power and conviction. It’s a shame how they were boxed into Fagan’s voice, especially for live performances. A true taste of what Becker brought to the table.
The live is loose and snappy , however, the album version might be one of the top-five productions of ever. There's something to be said for both of these guy's vocals, I just happen to be in the Fagen camp when it has Steely Dan on the album. In Becker's solo stuff, I just love the mixture.
Don't get me wrong... Donald Fagen is the voice of Steely Dan, and his production vocals were always spot on. I just enjoy the vocal diversity of their early work, and believe Becker's voice matured well enough to bring it more to the forefront of the live shows. In latter years Fagen's live vocal appeared to falter more often. I know he never chose to be the featured vocalist, and I respect how he overcame personal doubt and anxiety to make it work for live performances. I am thankful they had a productive second iteration regardless.
A bunch of other songs from the Manassas show were on youtube and they seem to have disappeared. Wayne Krantz does an unbelievable solo on Green Earrings and I was half way through learning the thing then it was gone. I can’t find a copy of the show anywhere 🤷🏼♂️
I'm pretty sure Walt took the vocal on this in Birmingham UK when I saw them. I was then surprised that it was Donald on the album. He's cool in his own way.
I saw them at Birmingham NIA in 2007, Heavy Rollers tour. Is that the show you mean? The only one I can recall Walter doing the vocals on was Haitian Divorce.

Hi Daniel, thank you, glad you enjoyed it. More Manassas tracks are available on yt in the meantime (as I'm sure you'll have noticed), including a video of this track.
It was on a couple of weeks ago, but gone again. Particularly love Becker singing on Midnite Cruiser. And if they ever remaster Two Against Nature, I hope they include this version of this song - both are great
I guess, it's a hunt to find that at all. I have the Midnite Cruiser cut digitally. And if it's some money they want, I would certainly buy such a CD if they sold it.
I’m just repeating what most people have said, but this is by far the superior version. This sounds like classic Royal Scam era Steely Dan, and the album version is like a soft Fagen solo song. Not that I don’t LOVE Nightfly, but it’s just not as gritty

Personally-not trying to convince anybody here-I wish Walter had taken over the lead vocals for TAO and EMG … Fagan’s voice had become quite thin and reedy by the mid 90s. In the 70s it really was one of the most beautifully twisted sounds in music, but for anything made after 2000, I know I’d rather listen to Becker’s gruff, no-nonsense interpretations. Circus Money is worth a listen, for anybody else so inclined. And Eleven Whacks, too.

In the early band he played mostly bass while in the last band he played mostly rhythmic guitar. Him and Fagen were mostly writers/composers, they always toured with a lead guitarist and a second usually-lead keyboard player.
This is interesting. I prefer the Fagen vocals and the revised lyrics and the cleaner, more pristine version, although the horn lines here are more energetic being a live version.

Walter sang better live than on record. Although, there are some really good vocals on Slang of Ages and Circus Money.
I think that’s what he was going for ❤
I can’t believe how good this is! Wayne Krantz and Walter Becker on point with the guitar and vocal work!
