Honestly. Hearing that the game moved away from Aspyr due to the 'Visual Presentation' is heartbreaking. In game development the actual gameplay is the hardest thing to get right, especially when trying to modernise an older title. Also the loss of a potential KOTOR 3 is just depressing. It's criminal that games as good as KOTOR I & II haven't seen a remake nor received the love they deserve.

@@Deathelement53 I'm not talking about love from the fans. The games are loved but the series hasn't received the love and attention they deserve from the publishers/rights holders. Since KOTOR 2 what have they given to this series besides some ports. There is the MMO but i'd hardly call it a fitting successor. The SWTOR used what KOTOR had built, not because they were interested in KOTOR but because it was an easier starting point than something completely new and could bank the brand recognition an entirely new concept could not.
The closest thing to a fitting continuation IMO is the Mass Effect Trilogy however how many other games have attempted something similar to KOTOR? How can something so good and respected be left to gather dust but the industry? Don't get me wrong, the fans love those games to this day and still work to continue their legacy as they can. Some of those fans worked for Aspyr but in the end, the love of the fans will not deliver what the series deserves without support from the relevant publishers and right's holders which is a huge shame.
I can only hope that one day the rights will fall to the right people who can do it justice and are filling to follow through.

The rest amounts to the technical nitty gritty, hopefully, which another studio might be better suited to working on. Game development can (and often does) defy expectations. Aspyr's own statement about "updating the story for modern audiences" is what made me fully-disinterested and concerned with their remake.
Any and every time the words "modern audiences" are used; its always just referring to personal-politics being not-so-subtly implemented into the works; existing characters being strawmanned or ruined entirely for the sake of serving the "modern audiences".
    Ghost busters 2016
    Star Wars sequel trilogy.
    Last of Us 2
    Mass Effect Andromeda
    Borderlands 3
Current expansions for Star Wars: Old Republic mmo.
    Halo TV show.
So; if the sources regarding Aspyr treating the remake like an RPG are true; well; thats some good news. While simultaneously; if they were to have followed the trend of what "modern audiences" means; then it would of likely not been Kotor, but a shell of it; probably.
If Saber interactive, or whoever; go the route of God of War: Star Wars edition; well; if it preserves the story; its half a point; at least.
Do we recognize Kotor as a story-only? or is the identity of Kotor also synched to it being an RPG with dice-rolling; real-time turn-based combat?
    What "is" kotor?
Personally; I'd like them to just copy-paste the existing story and plot.
But; add onto it. More quests, more sidequests, more this, more that, more more more.
    Keep the gameplay.
Real-time turn-based combat; with dice rolls, feats, powers, etc.
But; add feats, improve existing feats, more more more.
Turn what Kotor 2 did for kotor 1, but with the remake, what kotor 12 (or whatever) would look like today.
Improve upon kotor, dont change it.

I mean I get your angle, but Kotor's story needs to be updated. The dialogue could be very silly, immature, and coined for cheesy one liners that worked within the framework of its time and technological limitations.
But I'd like to see presentation above Darth Bandon's comically evil murder of his own sith soldiers, Malak's bullshit laugh and lack of an emotional reaction to his master's return, Trask's "press the A button" dialogue, and the overly lazy conception of the light side as giving all your money to the poor.
This isn't Kotor 2 were talking about with interesting dialogue and nuanced NPCs, this is the first game. Replay it and you'll see how much aspects of the story have aged. Even Carth's "I don't wanna talk about" goes on for too long.

When you're remaking something as great as KOTOR, it should be handled with the same care as you would when disarming a bomb. KOTOR 2 is the one that can be improved since the game is unfinished even with the restored content mod.

    • @vetarlittorf1807
      @vetarlittorf1807 Год назад +9

@@sethcooper899 KOTOR 2 may have more thematic depth and it's interesting to see a Star Wars story with a nihilistic tone, but KOTOR 1 handles the companions better and is overall more fun to explore. Compare the first levels for example. When exploring Taris, you get lots of world-building, side quests and character development. But Peragus is just a bland mining facility that has nothing interesting going on.
As for the companions, the only ones KOTOR 2 handles well are Kreia, Visas, Atton and HK-47 (but only if you have the restored content mod). Canderous is only to drive the plot forward, Bao-Dur feels like a discount Juhani, Mical and Brianna are pretty generic, T3 is not that relevant, Mira is just a typical femme fatale and GO-TO is just...there.
Whereas KOTOR 1 gives Revan a meaningful dynamic with each companion. Through side quests and interactions, Bastila gets lots of character development through the romance sub-plot, Revan can become a brother-figure to Mission and thus motivating character growth, Carth, while annoying, has an interesting backstory and serves as a foil to both Bastila and Canderous. Speaking of Canderous, while he's the least developed of the group, the loyalty and trust he forms with Revan is surprisingly believable and we learn a lot about Mandalorian culture from him. Then there's Zaalbar, who manages to separate himself from Chewbacca when it's revealed that he's a banished prince and has to regain his honor. Then there's Juhani, who gives us insight on both the Mandalorian Wars and the Jedi Civil War due to a tragic past. Jolee Bindo, who appears first to be merely a grumpy old man but bonding with him allows him to shed new light on the Jedi Code, something that can also further Bastila's development. Unlike KOTOR 2, T3 is important to the story in KOTOR 1. And finally, there's HK-47, who I admit is a pretty static character, but he makes up for that by being one of the best comic reliefs in all fiction.
Also, each planet in KOTOR 1 feels like it has its own personality and theme. Similar to how George Lucas always treated new planets in the first six movies. While in KOTOR 2, all the planets have pretty much the same personality and theme aside from Nar Shaddaa.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE KOTOR 2, especially Kreia. But I just feel KOTOR 1 is more emotional and character-driven.
While both Drew Karpyshyn and Chris Avellone are great writers, I think it's clear that Karpyshyn is the bigger Star Wars fan. Karpyshyn essentially did what JJ Abrams tried and failed to do; to make a traditional Star Wars hero's journey without feeling derivative.

What made kotor special was the themes, characters, lore, storytelling, etc. The gameplay (which I still love to this day, but I'm aware that there is nostalgia involved) was built to serve those other aspects, not the other way around. It was an attempt to make RPG's to be more palatable for a console audience back in the day.

Remaking KOTOR and KOTOR 2 needs to be done with great care as those two games are beloved and deviating too far from what made them special is likely to cause great upset within the fandom. Deviating too far from the source material is one of the things The Last Jedi is criticized for. Personally, I would like to see both KOTOR games updated graphically and any significant changes should happen in obvious places like updating the combat system. They can expand on the dialogue a bit but as long as it remains faithful to its source material it should be ok.
If or when the KOTOR 2 remake is done then I hope that the full game in its entirety is released. As we all know LucasArts forced Obsidian Entertainment to rush development of the sequel leading to an incomplete game being released. Some dedicated fans were able to band together and release the restored content mod which greatly improved the game experience but even after that there was still likely a lot of cut content.
Beyond that, we know that Disney changed the canon storyline beyond Return of the Jedi in order to make their own film trilogy, so it's entirely possible that a KOTOR 3 completely ignoring the events of SW:TOR could happen. A fully faithful remake of the KOTOR games and a third game something similar to what Obsidian envisaged before the projects that they and LucasArts themselves had been working on were canceled, would certainly have a positive impact on the fandom and help the studios laugh all the way to the bank.
Unfortunately we also know from the history of Star Wars that they will inevitably find a way to ruin the good things they make. Let's hope that doesn't happen with the KOTOR remakes.

one of the tenets of management is to never dampen enthusiasm, and Sony did just that by pulling the game away from Aspyr. the answer should've always been to find trustworthy leadership for the Aspyr developers, and let them continue their work on the game and right their wrongs.
that being said, if Sony's issue with a KOTOR remake was wanting it to be less RPG-like and more action-adventure-like, this is probably a reality which was unavoidable from the moment the project was green lit. can't expect the original developers, who are being given the chance to work on a remake, to do their first build of the game in a style that is anything but what cemented the original as a classic

The only things I can enjoy are certain fan projects and only some of the time because of their variance in quality or the mistaken notion that they somehow need to incorporate shit from the "new canon." George selling the franchise was the biggest mistake he ever made, bigger than his handling of Episode 1, which is saying a lot given the impact that had on the entire franchise going forward.

Revan didn't win the war by himself; He had an assortment of highly capable companions who were each forces to be reckoned with in their own right, each with their own personality, history, and relevance to the plot.
It's the same at the OT really; What makes that trilogy a timeless classic of not just the SW franchise but moviemaking in general, is the characters and their dynamics.
A "god of war" style gameplay would place all the work on Revan (the player) because there's no way in hell they'll be able to design 9 unique companions let alone integrate more than one into combat with you.

So Sony apparently wanted an action-adventure game like their usual IPs, while Aspyr wanted an RPG? Seems plausible, but still seems odd.
I think the remake will release within the next 3 years, but I have many questions about the quality it might be. The idea of turning a KOTOR remake into a God of War style game seems to go against much of what the original 2 games were. Most people were expecting/wanting a smoother combat system, but not to the point where the RPG elements were gone completely.
The idea that KOTOR 2 and possibly even KOTOR 3 were planned seems strange. Seems like the devs were getting ahead of themselves a bit, but who knows.
Sony may have made a huge mistake with how they handled this, but we might never know what actually happened for a long time. I hate it when publishers mess with the devs' vision for the sake of making things more mainstream. KOTOR may be a part of a mainstream, well-known franchise, but KOTOR is rather unique within the Star Wars franchise IMO. The fact that a KOTOR remake of all things has been fumbled this badly up to this point paints everything in a terrible light.

There were some writers while it was still under Aspyr bragging about all the changes they were gonna make and they didn’t really seem to respect or care about the source material either. I hope it’s good when it comes out but the more meddling by higher ups and investors I think the less likely that is. Most likely they’ll be heavily reliant on nostalgia and not improved gameplay/graphics with similar story and choice narratives

You don’t have to like Star Wars, either, to know something about this stuff is just mind boggling, it’s unheard of, as far as I know (outside of Post-Disney Star Wars, of course). Regarding KOTOR, just give it modern day graphics, that’s literally all that should be done and it’s a simple, reasonable enough request. Or if you wanna try and speak a certain language to get your wish across, then how about saying rereleasing KOTOR with modern graphics, if not to also give the devs the opportunity to truly complete their games, is a massive chance to make tons of sales to the current generation. Again, what is everybody trying to do anymore?

But even still I would have preferred a version that was more faithful to the turn based system of first 10 final fantasy’s. The original KOTOR while still turn based was also action oriented too almost like Star Ocean and first Chrono Trigger. You can move your characters around on the battlefield enemies are on the screen so you can avoid them if you wanted. That’s different from random battles like in FF games. Not every game has to play uncharted, god of war, last of us, ff7 remake, devil may cry…. Faster pace doesn’t always mean better. Please slow a game down a bit and let us bask in the game play and soak up all the fun and immersion. An I if I didn’t hear HK calling humans “meatbags” and wanting to kill them an enjoying it I’ll be sad…. Even though I rejected the characters behavior I still found the dialogue amusing and enjoyed turning him around to some degree.

Saber Interactive: "I'm sorry, Revan, but it seems that the remake is not going as well as we hoped..."
Revan: "Meh, don't worry. I'm sure they'll, at least, pay me and my crew if we agree to make a guest appearance on a "Duck Dodgers" episode."
Saber Interactive: "That series ended two decades ago"
Revan: "Really? Damn, you really miss a lot while being in suspended animation..."

Its such a shame that so many potentially legendary and loved games are ruined and destroyed by corporate greed.
Honestly at this point, I am not even sure I want a remake.
If you would have asked me a year ago, I’d have said, “hell yes!”
But as I have been playing it more recently, I have realized once again just how much I love it. And the problems that I had with the game, like clunky combat and outdated ai, I have found I am able to look past, and even view it as part of the game’s charm.
So in short, if the remake comes out, I will play it, but at this point I no longer have any enthusiasm for it and honestly, corporate greed can go f itself in the butt.
Thanks for keeping these videos coming Luke!
Love the content and keep up the great work!

one problem would be that it would directly compete with SWTOR, which already has a resolution to the Revan storyline. It might not be the ending you are looking for, but it is there.
Plus to be honest, Disney would be in charge, and I don't trust the house of mouse with creative control. Particularly while Kennedy is still there.

All I really want is kotor 1 with controller support. But, if they turn it into a giant open-world action-adventure game with thousands of fetch quests, like lots of modern RPGs, I'm going to do so disappointedly

As someone who has absolutely loved the original KOTOR in its entirety, down to the D&D-esque mechanics, characters, music, I was so disappointed to hear the real reason why Saber Interactive pulled it away from Aspyr. I'm even more disappointed that it was because it wasn't as shiny and as up to date as we've seen with other recent releases. The way that the game was built originally was one of the things that made it miraculous. It made it so literally anyone could play the game, no matter how experienced or inexperienced they were. I'm not happy that Saber took it away, especially now that we had information that Aspyr was going to make it about as perfect as the series could have been. They would have maximized the storylines, provided us with a 3rd game and a more complete version of KOTOR 2 as well. I can account for most of us that it really doesn't matter if it takes even 5 years to develop the first game. We want the quality and care Aspyr was taking to develop a well-made game, that now is going to fall into the category of just any other game. It makes me so disappointed and sad, and I don't feel like I'd play it if it doesn't fall back into the hands of Aspyr Media.

If you personally had to choose the gameplay styles that plays like an Action RPG but still has that KOTOR feel and experience, which inspirations (other games I mean) would you choose?

There are so many ways to go about it.
One that would be very interesting, but one that I doubt would be chosen, would be to fully embrace the turn based gameplay with environmental and positional considerations a la Divinity Original sin.

Another would be the hybrid route (which is already kind of what the originals were trying to do), of something like the FF7 remake (as with my previous comment, I know there are other games that one can point to, I'm just going with ones I know). Where you can have active, skill based combat that can be paused to use abilities or items.
As for the non combat sections, I hope a stats based system like the originals is kept do that party composition and attributes matter for dealing with the rest of the world.

We have had to wait 20 years already for another KOTOR game. Sony should give ASPYR the time needed to try and perfect what is needed to make KOTOR 3 perfect or as close as. And remasters of KOTOR 1 and 2 should be done as well, as not only will this please die hard KOTOR/star wars fans but even for the studios it will be a massive money maker! KOTOR is a massive series so it should be shown the full respect is does deserve!!

Honestly they might as well just make kotor 3 instead. Hopefully if this game actually comes out it will spark new interest and success which will lead them to create a third title. I just finished my first play though of the first one( I wasn’t alive when the first one came out) and it still is a masterpiece that runs, while not perfect, still pretty good

I have always learned to keep my expectations low for remakes. I almost doubted reality when ff7 remake came out and was as good as it was. God of War 2018 brought new life to the series for me as well. This could be an okay thing. Just depending on what they will do. That being said I understand your exact worries with this decision.

I must say I like Sony’s take on this. I want a game with AAA-style cinematic presentation. It would complement KOTOR’s beautiful storyline and lore very nicely.
If they leave the storyline unchanged but change the gameplay and visuals to create an action-adventure-like game, I think that’s a pretty good vision.

The studio that even got the remake to continue was eastern Europe which Portugal is southwestern... not eastern. There's only a few eastern European companies with saber interactive and even less that would work on a remaster in this manor.
Also it was the parent company Embracer that decided to make the move over not sony..

If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. Old game is great.
This new remake is going to be garbage because even from the get-go they hired someone who said that they hated Star Wars fans and they thought that the community was garbage to be the HEAD of the project. So don’t support this, don’t buy this, don’t even look at this. Don’t even talk about it. It’s going to be awful so avoid it at all costs.

I can get why you could be worried on the no name studio developing a game. But you only have to look at Hogwarts Legacy and see how that game turned out. The company that made that Avalanche made DBZ Sagas. One of the worst DBZ games ever created. It all comes down to how long they let a studio develop a game in my opinion.
