So, you must learn to twist your tongue. Our problem in Kenya is that our teachers prepared us for Kenya and not for the world. When you go to you UK and USA with our Kenyan accent the mzungus wanasema they can't understand it. Some people tend to adapt their way of talking to fit in, it's just automatic. Muache mambo ya sijui accent, just be inspired.
I came to the U.S in 1990 for college. I completely refused to change my accent. I am kichwa ngumu, I instead made them get used to it and develop patience with people who have a different accent and most people I interact with are fascinated by my accent. It's the one identity I will never change. Heck, I also struggled with being able to understand them.

There's no American accent, have melting pot of different culture, language, depending with your environment, Northern and southern states have different accents. Every one thrive to be understood without been bias

I know of acquaintance who was stopped by police for minor issue and turned to deportation, had a young one, never returned back home to the baby and family, Moja kwa moja, akapelekwa to detention camp and later Kenya without preparation.......
