Okay so… I randomly made this video one day as a little project for personal uses, not expecting it to get as much attention as it does now😅. Which is also why there isn’t a wide variety of shows shown here, as it mainly just includes ones that I personally watch (not to mention the transitions are kinda trash). But I really appreciate everyone’s suggestions and recommendations! I plan on making a renewed, updated version of this compilation to upload soon - in which case, I might end up taking this one down
In the next version, could you include *that* fight scene in Amphibia?
The animation was done by an actual animator. For context, the show and many other animated shows in the US are animated in South Korea. They animate whatever is on the storyboard, so if the storyboard looks bad then they animate it to reflect the bad storyboard content. Hence why it is important to actually hire good storyboard artists to do so. No one on the Steven universe crew is a good storyboard artist which can be seen when the characters height change for no real reason or things just look bad, like the fight scenes.
@@cosmicwooloo tbh... Is good option.

spinel is living proof that smear frames are really handy and should be used
Yeah lol
@Insomnia_Gaming lol
God the animation for her was so amazing!!! They used smear frames great, but didn't use them lazily at all!!! When she's spinning her staff you can actually see her doing proper manipulation of it with her fingers to make it spin!! Often when spinning a staff in animation it'll just completely blur it, and it's the only case I've seen where a character is spinning a staff with just their hands, not arms, and it actually shows it!!
What's smear frames?
@@aloisia1118 it’s like when the you need the animation to move so quickly that one of the frames will result in being smeared, and their body will be elongated, and they might have three eyes. fun fact: that steven universe episode from the first clip was story boarded by an animator from a different studio, and turned out to be the nicest animated episode and most consistent in character models , like in some episodes, heads become massive and legs are tiny stumps, it shows how much a good storyboard can impact a show
Not just a different studio but from a different country. Takafumi Hori worked on Trigger’s works like Kill la Kill and Little Witch Academia.
It was animated by a whole different studio. With a bigger budget
@@Oak_Eggar tbh lily sucks

You can tell that the animators in the Owl House really wanted the witches battle to be the best and coolest it could be, especially between Eda and Lilith, and I love this! Makes them feel one of a kind and that they stick out in your brain more!
Yes!
the fight scenes in this show are beautiful how do they do itttt
@@theghost_3j up the frame count
Yes! Every battle and significant moment has the framerate jump up from maybe 12 fps to 24. I believe that that's how they do it, similar to how into the spider verse achieved the same effect. They always try to make the big fights look best and it SHOWS.
Reminds me of amphibia
A quarter of the clips are just James Baxter animations.

It’s good the animation is good but the fighting animation is literally the best I have seen it’s really good but the animation in general isn’t the best of all time the best animation in my opinion is Hilda I love that show
Reminder that these are all done by individual/guest animators opposed to just the overseas animation that’s typically done for these shows! I believe all the shows featured (and others) do have a really appealing animation style in general, but I specifically included clips where the animation changes/ becomes more fluid. I’ve been reading your guys’ comments and thank you for the suggestions! I may have to make a part two in the future :)
I think the here comes a thought one was a guest storyboarder but the same animators. I dunno for sure tho
Ahhh yes! I believe Takafumi Hori was a guest as he both storyboarded *and* animated certain portions of Mindful Education.
Anime has a whole word for sequences where the animation style changes to a higher quality-- sakuga. I like this term because it helps avoid the implication that the regular animation is bad, and means that those sequences just really push the envelope. Great video!
Steven Universe has good animation....I just wish the characters would have consistent proportions
Same tbh
I blame Rough Draft for that. The storyboarders were allowed to be expressive when drawing for Steven Universe, but while Sunmin Animation was really good at adapting the expressiveness in a way that shined in the final product, Rough Draft pretty much copied the style of the drawing exactly, which would sometimes look off if the storyboarder didn't have a style that was conducive to animation (on top of their usual habit of taking lots and lots of shortcuts).
I feel the same about lore Olympus
steven universe animation actually kinda lacks very often… its really unfortunate. its great at times of course, but thats mainly whenever they have a guest animator that doesn’t usually animate for them

The Owl House is packed full of beautiful animation sequences. Do they bring on guest animators for them or something like that, if anyone knows? The animation styles seem to vary a bit between those sequences.
Most of the sequences that look incredible in The Owl House are either animated by Animation Supervisor Spencer Wan or the show's creator and Executive Producer: Dana Terrace.

I love the first scene in this of Steven universe, cause It shows that ruby gets frustrated over little things while sapphire is having so many things crushing her and stressing her out, most likely cause of her future vision, and it shows that ruby can calm down and figure out her own problems and help her wife's bigger problems, and that they have to help eachother feel ok so they don't fall apart
OHHHHHH thanks for explaining it, tbh i didnt understood the scene in my own so your explanation was very useful
I live how the owl house every now and then throws a hint of fluid animation throughout their show
I still can't believe how flawless the fight animation in The Owl House is
This decade was amazing for animation, with so many fresh creators and artists sharing their ideas with the world. Animation is such an interesting medium because you can tell whatever story you want with no limitations but a lot of people disregard it as something for just kids
These having such fluid animations make the moments and what the moments represent that much more impactful.
I had always loved the fact that Estelle was a voice actor for Steven Universe, and all of the songs that Garnet sang made all of them 1000% better.
The Owl House needs more seasons. Also I wanna see more of Gus :3
Rebecca, at peast since her time in AT always valued music a lot, so I think it's really cool SU had such care of getting very musically talented VA, which also means the movie being a musical was also so fitting!

Owl House's battle/important story scenes have some of the best animation I have ever seen in my life, the amount of work that we t into then it's astronomical.
James Baxter and Spencer Wan or so freaking amazing. I hope to reach animation even a fraction as smooth as theirs someday.
It's so cool when you start to recognize details about each animators style, like the slight dragging feeling of Spencer's that brings in more tension or the infinite smoothness of James baxters that gives an ethereal feel. It's so good to see their styles of animation come through in the styles of the shows characters

I love James Baxter's animation/style, it's so cute and unique
That eda vs lilith fight is what drew me into the show in the first place. I honestly didn’t expect that level of animation 🔥

5:46 I'd know that scream anywhere... But you know who ELSE knows that scream anywhere? MY MOOOM!
the whole steven universe “change” sequence animation is so smooth like dayum bruh
The dance from enchanting from fright is the smoothest animation I’ve seen in a long time. Toh in general just has some really clean animation. I’d also consider most of these more smooth animation than just good. Good is to broad of a term for animation as a whole. What some people consider good could be bad for other people. There are too many factors and aspects of animation to categorize certain ones as good. It’s all about preference in the end. All this said this was still an awesome video that showcased some amazing work from the great animators of this generation.
Smooth animation: *exists*
James Baxter: it's free real estate ;)
I've always thought it was adorable that James Baxter got his name from learning to read, and misreading signs for "games" and "bookstore," pronouncing them as "James" and "Baxter" respectively... While also paying homage to his animator's name. So sweet.
I'm so glad that all the clips from The Owl House are Spencer's animations specifically, love that guy.

The anime influences of The Owl House were cool to see here. Especially the scene od the monster chasing the one character (haven't watched it yet, sorry) through the halls. That had big Spirited Away vibes, just as chaotic and the monster had good weight.
I will say, the last scenes in She-ra and the princesses of power, the reboot, is absolutely beautiful!

The gravity Falls theme started playing and I got hit with nostalgia. I also knew all of these cartoons... (I'm a cartoon kid, the reality TV stuff was my least interest) so this was quite nostalgic since a few of these shows may never come back
I like how you just put the entire intro for Gravity Falls
I think The Owl House takes the win on this one. I've never seen such consistently fluid perfect animation, while the characters stay so meticulously on-model in a tv show
