Crazy Tube Circuits Killer V: Magnatone Crunch & Vibrato

  • As regulars will know, I'm a BIG fan of the wobbly M-style vibrato thing - I've gone through so many different pedals over the years all chasing after 'that' sound. But this is one of my favourites - the Killer V, all the way from Crazy Tube Circuits in Greece. I demoed it's younger brother last year - the Memphis - but rather than being just a vibrato with a level control, this one houses a full American-voiced overdrive circuit. So it really is a Magnatone in a box.
Whilst you can switch the vibrato in and out, the OD circuit is always active - but with a 2 band EQ, a voicing switch and supreme internal headroom, you don't have to have it gaining up if you don't want to....you can set it squeaky clean and transparent, and it won't crunch even when you're hitting the guitar hard. But of course, you can bring the gain in for some lovely Tweedy-type bite too.
A real magic touch is the Dry-Wet switch - bringing some of your clean signal back in, so that the Killer V doesn't just have to be a vibrato...it can do luscious throb by chorus too!
What do you think? Do you like the Magnatone thing? Or is it not for you? Comment below!
Guitar is a Nathan Sheppard NSG1 with Bare Knuckle Knuckleduster pickups. Amp is a Vajra JTM45 clone running into a Zilla Studio Pro 2x12 cabinet loaded with Scumback S75-PVC AlNiCo and Celestion AlNiCo Gold speakers. Recorded with Aston Spirit Condenser, '70s Sennheiser MD441 and sE RNR1 ribbon mics, with a Schoeps CMC6 room mic.

I really like the vibrato circuit on the Killer V. I wonder how it compares to the Magma57. Great video Joe.

I've not put them side by side (yet!) but my guess would be that the Killer V is _slightly_ more transparent in its overall tone (if you want it to be!!), but you get more control over the vibrato (eg. an additional wet/dry mode, the x2 and x3 speed switch, etc) on the Origin. Both are great :-)
