  • Well, that didn't take long. The desktop version of EmulationStation works really well with the Steam Deck, and allows you to streamline your emulation setup on this impressive handheld. Plus it works in perfect sync with EmuDeck, allowing you to have preconfigured emulation settings AND multiple options when it comes to organizing your ROM library. In this video we'll go over basic setup, add artwork, and improve how it displays in SteamOS.

Thanks for the great video! Let me clarify the gc vs gamecube situation. ES-DE (EmulationStation Desktop Edition) uses the RetroPie naming convention and not the Recalbox/Batocera naming convention. For most systems they are identical but there are some differences such as for Nintendo GameCube. ES-DE was originally based on the RetroPie fork of EmulationStation, from around two years ago. I had to go for the RetroPie names to retain maximum compatibility with RetroPie themes, which ES-DE does support. Part of the reason why my application is so fast on the Steam Deck is that I decided to support the Raspberry Pi 4/400 with the most recent release and I had to optimize it like crazy to get it to run somehow OK on that weak device. Overall that's a really good tip if you want to maximize the performance when programming, target a really weak device, it's also good fun and a nice challenge :)

Great video as always, two mentions.
    1. You can make a symbolic link names 'gc' pointing at the gamecube folder. No need to copy back and forth. Right click in folder, Create New > Link to file or folder.
    2. At 4:55 you mention case sensitivity, but Steam Deck microSD cards use ext4 with casefolding, meaning the system doesn't care for case sensitivity.

One downside is that SteamOS only recognizes ES as a single app. Which means you can't make per-game button mapping within SteamOS, or track your play time per-game. Not a huge deal, but those are features you will get if using the SRM method.

You can already make custom mappings per controller inside ES-DE if needed for some reason, but that's only affecting the frontend and not the actual emulators. With RetroArch you could do per-core and per-game settings of course but for standalone emulators I guess it differs whether it's supported or not.

How did you create the Select + Start to quit shortcut? I'd love to use that

Do you need to have retroarch already downloaded? OR, to rephrase: I already had tetrarch downloaded and configured, but after going through the setup, now when I launch games through emulation station (or tetrarch by itself), it doesn't look good like yours does in the video (e.g., integer mode off, tiny stretched out screens, transparently overlapping the overlays, etc.), the settings are all janky and bad and weird. I'm wondering if because I already had it installed? Any ideas? THANK YOU FOR YOUR AMAZING VIDEOS... I've been following you since early days and bought so many little handhelds because of your recommendations so I very much appreciate all the hard work you do!

Nevermind -- I figured it out. And I love the overlays you've included-- I changed the scale on mine to make the gameboy screen smaller so I could see MORE of the overlay, that's how much I love it!

Great video. Region in "Other Settings" is greyed out for me. So I can't change it. No idea why.

When you are putting your roms on your SD card via your computer, is it necessary for roms that are in zip files to be taken out of those? Or does emulation Station browse through them? Also how do you deal with roms that have additional files like DLC or updates? How do you add those? Also, does the Emulation Station allow you to add cheats?

    Thanks for the guide.
If l were to add more ROMs to a folder, how do l only scrape the new ROMs only? It keeps doing them all over again for me.

In your Roms folder on your SD card how do you know what to name each folder? Like Game Boy, and Play Station. Are they Case Sensitive, or is there actually a giant Retroarch torrent file somewhere with all of the Roms and Bios.

I like using the favorites section for games that I'm playing at that time. When I finish, it gets removed.

Nice Video. But many PSX roms come with .cue and several .bin files. How can I hide them in the games list?

This was a great video, thank you very much. The only thing that's not working for me is Prime Hack. Whenever I clicked Generate List is tells me to close Steam first even though it is. Any ideas?
