Fun fact - my cousin is the orthopedic surgeon who reconstructed Siya’s knee! Siya is a hero and a legend in South Africa for so many reasons. Obviously he’s an incredible player who plays with so much passion for his country, but his leadership is so much more about who he is as a person and what he exemplifies off the field. After his dad abandoned his mom when she was pregnant with him, his mom struggled to cope and left him as a baby to be raised by his elderly grandmother in horrific poverty. They lived in a shack with no electricity or running water, and some days they couldn’t afford food so his grandma would just give him water mixed with sugar to try keep his energy up. He used to walk to school barefoot because they couldn’t afford shoes for him. He was interested in rugby as a child, and luckily there was a youth rugby club in his neighborhood, set up as a means to keep impoverished youths off the streets. Siya joined and quickly his coach spotted his talents, poured a lot of effort into him, and eventually Siya got scouted & won a rugby scholarship to a top boarding school in SA, where he excelled and the rest is history. My brother was fortunate to play with him at university, and said he’s an incredible human all-round. Siya is so humble, so gracious, and he plays not for his own glory but for our country and to be a symbol of hope to poor children across the country. He is also the first ever black South African rugby captain, which is significant as rugby historically was considered a white sport, and black people were banned from playing professionally during apartheid. Siya represents the modern, diverse face of SA rugby, and is a symbol of how rugby can and has united our once divided nation. He’s so respected as a leader by his team and by the people of our country. He also has his own charitable foundation and he and his wife do a lot of good work for charity on the side. He’s an all-round good dude, super hardworking, charismatic & talented as hell.

Amen! He also adopted his younger siblings (now teenagers) and raising a beautiful family with his wife Rachel. I don't have the vocabulary to express my admiration for this man. Captain, my Captain. World class level hero!

It is not just his work rate on the field. He is incredibly humble, and an absolute gentleman. Massive respect for the man.

This legend is on par with Mandela. He is reuniting a whole country. He as captain won 2 world cups back to back. He is our most pride possession. Humble to the bone, absolute gentleman. What a LEGEND. Siya will forever be in our history books.
Edit: Also, Siya and Eben's "bromance" is adorable. Big monsters dominating the field, but lovable, kind people in the daily. We love these okes.

Rugby World Cup only happens every 4 years, so South Africa is back-to-back champions for 2019(host:Japan) and 2023(host:France), next World Cup is in 2027, host is Australia, and then after that 2031 USA is hosting the Rugby World Cup. But there are other international competitions each year, Europe has the "6 Nations" competition Feb - March, and the South Hemisphere nations (NZ, Australia, Argentina and South Africa) have "The Rugby Championship" Aug - September. And then there are other friendly international games throughout the year spread out. But eventhough it is a friendly in name, it is definitely the most competitive friendly games in the world, and have a great outcome on the teams world ranking position.

Would it be hyperbolic to say that the last person to unite our country the way Siya does was Mandela? He's the guy that puts every single one of us on the same team ❤

If I am not mistaken, one of South Africa's richest people actually paid for Siya's knee surgery to get him the best doctor money can buy to ensure he is back on his feet before the Rugby World Cup started.

But siya himself is rich? Why would he need someone else to pay for him? Siya is a millionare

If you want to see a workhorse and a monster when it comes to Tackles made succsessfully. Go and take a look at the last 3 games of the Rugby world cup 2023, and look at nr7 Pieter Steph duToit. A master class at tackeling.
