There was in 30 years back a very beautiful model of Philip's name was Philip's philetina and philetina deluxe, but God knows why this shaandaar model was closed to sale. The sound was marvelous, today lot of people wants a good model of radio. But currently no where is available.
I think radio technology is same. The only difference is nowadays there is so much interference in radio signals bcoz of other communications like cellphone towers. Thats why in old times radio sound was good but now even radios are good but signals are not.

I changed the FM filter for better selectivity; I later changed the AM filter as well. The performance improved. I even installed a larger ferrite rod. I can now hear AM stations from Cuba, Canada and many States from New York.

Sony ICF-J40, it is very well designed(circuit) radio. Reception in AM band is very good. Ferrite rod size = 5inch and used IC Sony cxa1019p (DIP). Noise in AM band very low comparing to other radios(Panasonic RF562D, Philips DL167/40, Sony ICF18). SW reception is also good. FM reception is average.
It's a good looking radio. Sound output is not very good. Sound of Sony ICF-F12 or Sony ICF18 is better than this radio. AM reception of this radio is much better than latest Sony ICF19 / Sony ICF506.
this information about this radio , very good the wave MW low noise began 530khz-1600khz .. The other must Japanies companies are.. sanyo .toshiba .hitachi. nec. silver .national mitsubishi. sankyo. general...etc .
The FM band is average from the factory but it can be improved. I replaced the wide FM I.F. filter (280 kHz if I remember correctly) for a Murata 150 kHz version. I then aligned the FM rf coil and capacitor. Now the performance is impressive.
@@snpmath I have seen two versions of this radio. The old version had better sensitivity than the new one. The new version used surface mount components instead of through-hole components. The new version had a 30 pin chip instead of 28. Sensitivity on the newer version improved by replacing the AM/shortwave I.F. filter with a better one.

I like Sony...thay are good radios....I want the ones that are made for Japan...not the ones that are made for the USA....i want the ones that say the city names..like Tokyo Hiroshima Nagasaki Osaka. ETC...we do not get anything..like this where I live!
Nice Radio. I like how Sony gave you ample room for the power cord. I have a few older Panasonic Radio's from the late 60's to early 70's. The spaces Panasonic gave you for cord is laughable. You have to wrap the cord up very tightly and in very small loops on order to get the cord to even fit in the compartment.
