  • Having grown up in the projects of Boyle Heights, will.i.am knows how hard it can be as a teenager in East Los Angeles. That’s why he’s excited about a graduation requirement at Roosevelt High that turns students into “maptivists,” tech-savvy citizens who use geographic information systems to make a positive impact on their community.

I grew up in Boyle Heights. I attended Breed Street, Hollenbeck Junior High and Roosevelt High School. I graduated High School in '69 and went on to Los Angeles Trade Tech to learn Commercial Art. I was an Art Director for 10 years. What saves every family are parents who care. The Best Man at my wedding grew up in Boyle Heights. He, being Mexican, I asked him how he stayed out of the gangs. He said his Father would have kicked his butt and sent him back to Mexico.

Every year, eleventh grade students in the Math, Science, & Technology Magnet Academy at Roosevelt High School, in the Boyle Heights community of Los Angeles, do a "Service Learning Project." Working in teams to investigate a social justice topic, they engage geographic information systems (GIS) to explore, analyze, and present their data. Led by the social studies and English teachers, students build a deep understanding, which they present to the community.
This segment premiered at Esri's 2018 User Conference, as part of the "Making a Difference" award ceremony, in which Esri President Jack Dangermond gave the award to lead teachers Mariana Ramirez and Alice Im. (Any K12 school can acquire the same GIS software for free for instruction, at esri.com/schools.)

You want Boyle Heights to look like an Asian country, you have money. Move there. Leave our hood alone. It’s overpopulated as it is. I’d love to see my community look like it did in the 80-90’s. Where parking was ample. Where kids were able to play outside. Kickball, baseball, football….
