My best Bf3 memories comes from that map.
I'll always remember that game the the boi's litteraly spawn camping everything that came out that american carrier in Rush (Russia Side).
We had everything ready : claymore, mines on the beach, snipers, rpg's, javelins, igla's etc..
I remember that everyone had a specific job to defend that beach.
I've made my best tank clips there against helo's and jets....
      Ahhhh, sweet sweet memories.. ^^

Ex-USAF 1N3 Farsi linguist here. The Excel at 4:32 doesn't say anything about the population of the island of Kharq. This spreadsheet lists "Record codes", with the following values - Province: 1, Township: 2, Section: 3, Village: 4, City: 5, Places (?): 6, 8. Point 1: To protect the security of the information, the statistics of the places (?) that have three or fewer households have been annotated with an asterisk *. Point 2: The information for non-residential households have been included, up to the level of the township.
So this spreadsheet doesn't SHOW any actual data. It simply shows how the data in the other tabs of the sheet is labeled. There's no reference to Kharq island at all.
(To Cappy) I'm happy to run through any other Farsi stuff you get in the future! I miss translating.

Every EPSTINIAN base in the Mid East is destroyed. Israelistan can't enter the Gulf or dock a ship anywhere. No US aircraft fly directly over Iran out of PURE FEAR. They can't refuel rearm or resupply within 1000 km of Iran. And Iran is ready for them. Israelistan has incited a BLOOD FEUD from all its murders. No EPSTINIAN will ever leave Iran alive. Be assured if needed they will torch the Island before EPSTIENLAND gets it. These are the same people that terrified Iranians. You can also be assured hundreds of EPSTINIANS are already dead you don't destroy that many bases without dead. Iraq and Syria are both attacking cut off stranded and helpless EPSTINIAN bases. The GOLEM CHUMP has surrounded himself with Christian Zionists who are now telling the military openly this is a Holy War and God has chosen Golem Chump to lead them Armageddon and the Return of Christ is coming. And you thought Jibberin Joe was insane.

I’ve personally see an entire oil field on fire. Take it from a guy who spent two weeks in southern Iraq in 1991 breathing oil smoke from burning Kuwaiti oil fields (some days the smoke was so thick we couldn’t see past 50 feet at noon). Trying to take Kharg Island is nothing more than assaulting the worlds largest fougasse. It is nothing but suicidal lunacy. One of those really great planning ideas created by people who will never be involved in the actual execution. You know, the kind of officers who look at a map and say, “I don’t understand why that unit hasn’t reach its objective yet? Shit, they only have to move two inches on the map!”

The thing about it is that the last, and I mean the very last place, that the regime would want to attack is Kharg Island. The oil flowing through the island is their ENTIRE economy.
I think what is going on here is trying to find some leverage to get Iran to stop attacking shipping in the Strait. Up till now their oil business with China hasn't been specifically targeted. If we make it obvious that their attacks on merchant shipping are going to put Kharg on our target list maybe something can be worked out.
Alternatively we just pull the trigger and outlast Iran. Without oil money they won't be able to continue to produce rockets, missiles, launchers, drones, etc. They won't even be able to provide enough food/water for their people.

@ChadThundertalk That is a retarded hypothesis, frankly. Even if they knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that we were coming there is no reasonable justification for expending munitions on your own infrastructure when this island and infrastructure are obviously meant to be used as a bargaining chip in future negotiations. They could deny it as a chip but they would invariably have to rebuild and eat that cost after the cessation of hostilities. Better to let it be a chip.

It makes sense, but then the US would be blocking Chinese ships, or at least ships headed to China. So far they've stayed out of things, but actively blocking their ships would be acting against them directly. If the island were taken, the ships simply wouldn't dock and such interactions would be avoided. So all in all I see why it would make a lot more sense to just go for it.
What can Iran do? Bomb their own island? Even if they do, they still won't win back anything as it will still not be operational. Neither can they send ships because most suitable ones have been destroyed, and any remaining ones would be sunk easily. For how crazy the whole idea is, I see surprisingly few downsides. Apparently even Carter considered it back in the day.

And if we stay, get ready for another forever war. Lastly, either way we're going to have more terrorism within our borders. Iran gonna sneak a few speedboats across 130 miles of open water, without getting spotted by the dozens of aircraft constantly criss-crossing the area, satellites, several Navy ships and who knows how many other civilian ships that would report it? So that a few dozen Iranians could step foot on the beach and immediately get mowed down by the waiting heavy weapons and helicopters?
Even if they made it the entire way without getting spotted, the troops on the island would be able to see them coming, even from the top of something as small as a 3-4 story building you can see about ten miles out into the ocean in clear weather. Night time would help a little, but it won't hide you from thermals - and there is NO concealment on the open ocean, with cold water all around they'd stick out like a bonfire in an open field.

      @S0ulinth3machin3 28 days ago +11

It doesn't give us much leverage. If the strait is closed, then of what use is Kharg Island? It won't be exporting anything anyways. They haven't yet mined the strait, they're just hitting commercial vessels with marine drones. That's a conscious choice. They can stop attacking with marine drones at any time. Mining, that's a different story. Takes time to de-mine, especially since our brilliant Department of War decomissioned 4 minesweepers in September (6 months ago) which were stationed in Qatar. Strategic genius, I gotta say. The minesweepers were ostensibly replaced with littoral ships, but in this situation, it's impossible to have too much minesweeping capacity.

For centuries now all wars have been started by the wealthy, powerful ‘Ruling Elite’ and fought by the easily manipulated, poor and powerless masses. America’s youth sent to invade, kill, destroy and die on foreign lands not because the foreigners were a threat to us, but because it served the moneyed-interests of the Elite. Our youth return in flag-draped coffins or as a shattered version of their former selves suffering from PTSD until they end it all, a life wasted. Neither the Elite nor their offspring will ever see the horrors of war in person. Soldiers are nothing more than a commodity to the Elite, like orange juice or pork bellies, to be exploited for power and profit. One of the greatest minds of all time shared his feelings regarding soldiers and war in the 2 quotes that follow. Reading them should give everyone pause to reflect on his words and understand the futility of war, a lesson we have failed to learn.
“This topic brings me to that worst outcrop of the herd nature, the military system, which I abhor. That a man can take pleasure in marching in formation to the strains of a band is enough to make me despise him. He has only been given his big brain by mistake; a backbone was all he needed. This plague-spot of civilization ought to be abolished with all possible speed. Heroism by order, senseless violence, and all the pestilent nonsense that goes by the name of patriotism…how I hate them! War seems to me a mean, contemptible thing: I would rather be hacked in pieces than take part in such an abominable business.” ~Albert Einstein
“The pioneers of a warless world are the youth who refuse military service.” ~Albert Einstein

Should be the Marines by doctrine and they have the armored vehicles and numbers to land and over run the island efficiently, however they have not been built to make a resisted landing and they need to get their ships through the Straight and with in 12 miles of the island to launch the assault. The 82nd is airborne and jumping out of a plane to parachute on to the island would be dumb. I think unfortunately it’s going to be a combination of seals and rangers backed up by air assault from either the marine corps or 101st. But boat and air assault into a fortified location is very risk even with air superiority. It’s very possible we could take the island but with some pretty stiff losses for us.

If they are looking to capture rather than an in-and-out raid, they are using the wrong tool. Feels like Panama where we are using the wrong tool for the mission where special operations were tasked with capturing an airfield rather than sending in rangers, whose mission profile includes such operations. Delta could be used to neutralize some high value targets to clear the way for assault forces (rangers and/or airborne).

Iran is waiting for the marines to land before they roast them all alive. Who in their right mind marches into a giant flammable oil tank yard when you know with absolute certainty that your opponent has missiles that can reach you and knows your exact location coordinates?
