  • GLP1 medications like Wegovy and Ozempic can help with weight loss but may also be able to help with psychiatric symptoms from depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and more. But are GLP1s safe in psychiatry, and how do they compare to nutritional interventions like a ketogenic diet to treat mental health disorders? Dr. Roger McIntrye, a world-renowned psychiatrist and researcher, joins Metabolic Mind to discuss the potential roles of GLP1 medications and ketogenic therapy, and how clinicians and patients could consider their use.

    I am on a ketogenic diet and I also take an glp1 initially to treat diabetes. I have lost 61 lbs, and reversed my diabetes , my other chronic conditions have reversed as well. The food noise is gone , cognitive function has skyrocketed . I am also taking cod liver oil for cognitive and cardiovascular health and my dr is very pleased. My A1c is 5.3 down from a 12. I’ll never change from Keto / carnivore bc I’m healthier now at 57 than I was at age 35

      On a ketogenic diet (strictly 0 carbs and zero seed and vegetable oils, no fiber) for 5 months; A1c down to 5.0 from 11.5 in 5 months, no GLP1

    Eating healthy is actually a lot cheaper considering the insanely high cost of the pharmaceutical treatments like wegovy, ozempic, etc…

    • @fractalbeans9513

      Absolutely! If diet can regulate insulin and GLP=1 among other issues, without the barely studied side effects of these drugs, why not prescribe that instead? Edited to add: actually, my grocery bill has gone dramatically down after switching to animal-based (meat cooked from scratch; eggs; I don't tolerate dairy, it seems), not to mention how much easier shopping is now.

      Thank you! That’s awesome that you are disciplined and have found root cause for your depression. And I hope we see some patients will need help/time to adjust to the keto diet , especially those of us with Carbohydrate addiction. And I have been on keto ( low carb carnivore based) with positive results in my 30s but now that my psych treatment have affected my metabolism and I’m 80 pounds heavier, and in menopause at age 53, they are many factors in play. Just something to think about.

    I have a Canadian friend who took part in a study on Ozempic a few years ago. During that time not only his weight dropped, but also his activity and socializing levels significantly increased, two things he quite struggled with in his life (beside his weight). He appeared less anxious too. He didn't refer it as a direct effect of the substance, but we always thought there might be a connection. This talk was therefore quite enlightening.
    I'm still very sceptical towards meds, as I think those same effects can be achieved by changes of diet and lifestyle (as pointed out in the interview), but on the other hand many of us are too depressed and lethargic to make that shift by ourselves.

    I'm on a keto diet for almost a year , and don't spend more money on wholefoods because I don't need to snack or eat as often (just two meals per day). Why do these speakers not mention that its no extra over-all cost on keto , despite the seemingly higher price of meats/fish etc .!?

    He's an allopathic who's not quite there yet. Keep working on him. I hear him saying that they are thinking about keto as a tool. He has a knee-jerk acceptance of Glp1 agonists for experimentation.

    Thank you Dr McIntyre for your compassion. As a bipolar patient I find it sad that we have to wait so long to see improvement in treatment options for Mental health (and so many SSRI, & mood stabilizers, antipsychotics have led many of us to metabolic disorder). Or perhaps it’s the chicken v egg. ?

    • @beabeauty
      @beabeauty 7 месяцев назад +1

      Yes the side effects of poly pharma for many of us with depression, anxiety and mood/mental health disorder are likely worse over time. Especially if we are treating the symptoms and not root cause! Speaking from experience and hoping these Dr and NP will treat using these evidence based treatment, and also teach patients diet /lifestyle to allow Pt off the GLP 1 agonist at some point.

    Glp -1 stimulates TRPV1 that increases insulin that in turn increases more TRPV1 that then puts glucose into the cell independent of the insulin receptor-> too much reactive oxygen species in excess of the cell’s antioxidants -> inflammation and peroxidation in the body. A TRPV1 antagonist decreased lipid peroxidation in PCOS women with metabolic syndrome.
    Epileptic Children on oxcarbazepine that increases TRPV1 have significant increase in LP(a), broken bones and heart disease over time.
    Beware too much up-regulation of glp-1, it may help initially in the obese patient with toxic lipid metabolism however there are caveats of its integration with TRP receptor pathophysiology.
    Lastly, too much TRPV1 -> hypoosmolality-> too much TRPV4 -> atherosclerosis, osteoporosis, aneurysm and more.

    As a 45 year old autistic woman and activist it's deeply demoralizing to hear autism called a "condition of childhood" like this. It is a developmental difference but take your OWN advice here. Words matter. Framing it this way perpetuates harmful stereotypes that contribute to people like me getting the help we need. That is why autism is the least employable of all disabilities. So much misinformation like this. The lay person will not know "disorder of childhood" is technically called a developmental disorder and can be diagnosed at any age. They only know they heard a "world-renowned expert in psychiatry" call it something only kids get, so I must be lying, crazy, or "making excuses" when I say I am autistic.
