Volvo's Sexy Electric Off-Roader Is The New XC40 Recharge

- Off-roader? From Volvo? Well... Kind of. The XC40 Recharge is no more capable than the regular XC40 off the beaten path, but oddly in the full EV segment if you want something more capable than this you'll need to buy a Hummer EV SUV or wait for the Rivian R1T/R1S. With more clearance than all but a handful of EVs, traction software with mild off-roading in mind, and a symmetrical motor layout, the plucky little Volvo EV is shockingly well rounded... As long as you're not looking for a long EV range that is.

Sorry about the battery capacity typo. The battery is a 75kWh battery. oops.
Isn't this the second battery stat that has been published wrong?
Is it? I don't recall?
Mulligan 👍🏻 ⛳️
@@AAutoBuyersGuidelyriq video was wrong as well
78 is correct, isn't it? My C40 has a 78 kWh battery...or are you talking about usable capacity?
I own 2021 xc40 p8 recharge. Absolute pleasure driving this solid machine. No complaints so far. Battery capacity is 78 kWh usable is 75 kWh. Volvo recommends charging upto 90% of total capacity. Low CG has significantly improved its driving dynamics in particular around corners. While making buying decision I prioritized safety over range. Just compare the feel of door opening of Vovlo xc40 vs any Tesla. Light weight Tesla may help with range anxiety but Volvo will more likely get you to your destination safely.
I Just checked Volvo's manual, there is a separate Parking climate control in Climate controls screen which allows to turn on Climate only when you leave the vehicle or want to change remote climate control.
Best segment ever (25:00): describing the XC40's maneuverability, then finding a downed tree blocking the road and having to turn around. Genius!
I wish you would add dog crate sizes to evaluate trunk cargo size for all CUV and SUVs.
I’ve had my 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric Twin. Coming toward six months . . . Damn I love this car. Comfort, power, style. Google Assistant to entertain, communicate, control the environment. I’m about to do it’s first ‘big trip’, I’m actually looking forward to charging while I enjoy a coffee, only done it once. I had a 7kW charger install at home, so a single night will charge, plus I have extensive solar.
The Recharge Twin will be a ‘limited edition’, as Volvo try to get more C40 out their for those happy with a bit less power. Is it worth the money? Yes. I also own a 1922 Fird Model T and a 1999 Porsche Boxster S. I truly expect the ‘twin motor’ option will become more limited for at least 2 years.
Overall this is the epitome of EV’s in my opinion. It is exceptional in all areas, It would be bad financial practice to buy any new car, bar the Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric Twin.
So your bigtrip will be 160 miles and then recharge with Big Brother is watching you all the time. 🤣🤣🤣 My record with my old XC 60 is 660 Miles with one tank of diesel.
@@steffenrosmus9177who is the, “Big Brother” of whom you write?
A couple of comments. The visor doesn't need to slide, as it reaches the mirror housing and B-pillar without needing to extend. Also, the front passenger can activate the infotainment and HVAC functions after the driver leaves by simply pressing the home button.
Just bought mine! Ready to have a good time driving in Australia.
6:25 Alex, I could be wrong, but I believe Volvo put that divider there to decrease the volume of each compartment, thus avoid having to install an emergency trunk release. I have seen other manufacturers use this trick, particularly on super cars with small trunks. It's designed in a way that you could take it out easily, but it technically meets regulations.
The weird frunk arrangement is probably for safety regulations; if it was a giant hole they'd need to include a safety escape latch in case a child somehow got trapped inside.
"I personally identify as front trunk agnostic" That's the best comment I've heard in a youtube car review in a long time, I love it. That's why I watch; well and for all the really carefully researched vehicle data of course. Thanks as always for the entertaining reviews.
I cannot wait for there to be a whole market full of EV competition from the major brands to compare your future videos on
I have had my XC40 Recharge for a year now and I love it. It has issues and it’s a lemon but I love it! It looks good and so fast! I can’t wait for Apple CarPlay.
loving the rallycross testing trail!
Don't forget about the Volvo C40! It's fully electric and a more modern updated Volvo vehicle.
You’re bottom left camera feed for the steering wheel is reversed for at least the return part of your off-road portion of the video. I thought you were drifting at first 😂.
Carplay starts rolling out in next week or two in version 2.2
Yay
Adding a water fording rating but also lowering the ground clearance sounds like a contradiction
currently only 2023 models are now available, so Pixel Head Lights (Active matrix) is an option, which according to Bjorn Nylon likely one of the best headlights on the market (based on the C40 review on his RUclips channel)
This was great! Thank you for your thorough reviews.
you have the battery specs on the plug in Hybrid
Chain saw just might fit in the front trunk 😎
Thanks for the great review. It would be interesting to compare it to electric Lexus UX.
This was a great review (beautiful backdrops, by the way)! What color is that -- Thunder Grey? I was torn between Sage Green and Thunder Grey but haven't been able to see either in person.
This seems like Thunder Grey yes. These are also my two favorite colors but I'm leaning more towards thunder grey.
I'm thinking of ordering one but delivery time is 1 year in my country and the range and trunk space have yet to convince me. Still not sure if I should go fully electric or plug-in. Tough choice atm.
Love my 2023 C40 Recharge. Hertz is dumping its EV fleet and nobody wants the C40, so it was $28K with 14K miles. Well-sorted, comfortable, sporty, great build quality, safe.
18.8 KWH battery? I think not lol 😂
In the polestar your passenger can simply hit the Play/Pause button for media to “turn the car back on” and get media/AC etc. Not sure but wondering if Volvo does same?
Yes, the passenger can hit Play/Pause to re-energize the infotainment and HVAC while waiting for the driver to return.
is "off-roading" really a selling point that a significant number of customers look for? Performance in snow definitely applies, but who is really going to take a subcompact crossover off-road?
Hi Alex, thanks for the video! Any thoughts on why cabin noise so much better here in xc40 compared with C40?
Alex, are you testing the electric Genesis G80 soon? I didn’t even know that it existed until last week.
LOVE @5:15 AMEN! I am single and i rarely even use my Trunk in the vehicles ive owned over the years myself.. so i dont care if the EV has a Frunk or not either. you soooo made a very good point.
Overall this, and your many others, is a great review. For Heaven’s sake, one drives farther, and one furthers one’s career. The misuse of ‘further’ on this channel is astounding.
Alex - how do you acquire the legroom /headroom numbers?
I’ve noticed before that they don’t seem to add up. For example in this video you narrate that the XC40 has more rear headroom than the Polestar 2 (and it seems to be true looking at the videos) but the numbers you show on screen have the XC40 with less headroom than the Polestar..
I noticed that too. His graphics don't seem to match his verbal descriptions.
Thanks.... from Portugal.
The hood looked really misaligned on the passenger side (left side as you look at it head on) at the start of the video. What was going on?
I didn't close it properly apparently.
I saw that too! Haha I was very confused
This is very easy to do...if it doesn't latch properly, you get no warning on the dash. I drove my C40 50 miles on the freeway and didn't notice it until my coworker mentioned the "panel gap" between the hood and front fender.
The hood has two latches, one on each side, but if you close it too gently you can end up with only one of them latched and a crooked-looking hood.
Why does the front hood look like there's a large panel gap along the side of the hood that tapers to a normal gap once the hood seam is near the windshield??
This is not subcompact! A full compact!
Texas summer wise, inability to leave vehicle running after parking is a deal breaker. I wonder if there is a remote climate controls present in any way.
Edit: apparently, there is separate menu as stated in reply.
I agree! They need that start button or someway to leave the car on! Weird!
Someone posted this a few hours ago: "I Just checked Volvo's manual, there is a separate Parking climate control in Climate controls screen which allows to turn on Climate only when you leave the vehicle or want to change remote climate control." I have a different EV but being able to keep the AC on while you shop or whatever is BOSS. The ability to warm it up automatically in the winter rocks too, no more scraping windshields in the morning! =D
@@ElroyMcDuff that’s good to know
As long as you are sitting in the driver's seat the infotainment and HVAC systems continue to run. If the driver leaves the car everything shuts down, but the passenger can press the Play/Pause button and reactivate them.
@@michaelbarton6002 thanks!
I think XC60 recharge is a more well rounded option than this…
they keep on changing the name of the XC40 recharge and trim. I was searching online and found Pure Electric P8 Plus, not sure it was the old name or new name for the trim
5:50 Uhhh, why would you build a ground-up EV with a long hood? Idk, ask Ford? I think it's mostly to create a shape that is more traditional and thus more appealing to some customers. Granted, Ford's unnecessarily long-hooded EVs do have large frunks.
I do think that every EV should have at least a small storage area for the mobile EVSE. That way if the back is packed with stuff, you can still easily access it. Many EVs that lack a frunk still have plenty of space up front for a small EVSE storage area.
That infotainment screen is kinda small though for a vehicle at that price, no?
Not at all
Alex, advice please, if both extended range V60 T8 phev and XC40/C40 pev
meet my needs, and the V60 is $10k Canadian cheaper after rebate, which one should I buy? Is the V60 T8 tool complicated to own past warranty?
I have a soft spot for wagons, so I vote V60!
@@AAutoBuyersGuide Thank you Alex for the quick reply! Great videos from one of the very best automotive analysts! 👍. I bought a 2016XC70 coz I am a Volvo wagon lover too. Got my wife a 2017S60 thanks to your review 5 years ago!
The efficiency is not impressive. Less than 80 MPGE is more in the truck rather than car range.
Can you tell us how to get you tube videos on the entertainment system?
That's supposed to come with Version 2.2 of the software.
Seems like it’s impossible to buy an electric car, it’s either not available, or only available for very wealthy.
sorry to burst your bubble, but Volvo is now owned by Geely which is a Chinese car company
Everything dang good except....RANGE! IT IS PATHETIC!
Sexy lol? Volvo XC40 can't become sexy? I feel nervous a bit,the XC40 is cute Volvo's Electric Compact SUV but not the cutest SUV.
Ehhhh get C40
Terrible lease deals on these!!!!
If Volvo can sell them then why subsidize a lease?
With high sale prices most all leases are terrible deals now.
@@mart0225 If Polestar can have "reasonable" lease deals, so should Volvo. Its not like im asking for $500 a month on a $60K car. But asking $5000 down and $1200 a month is just dumb and these freaking idiots paying over MSRP are not helping!!!!
I have a 2021 XC40 Recharge and yes nowadays the deals suck but I got my lease a year ago and I got a steal on mine.
We know Alex, you are very neutral to availability of frunk in EVs.
What was the point in this comment..
Horrible efficiency
Lack of a frunk in a BEV is poor design, poor system integration, poor choice for cost cutting, and/or poor component miniaturization. Don't believe engineers trying to self justify their frunkless BEV designs. Many companies give their BEVs electric trunks/tailgates but cumbersome to use frunks resulting in low use rate. The solution is a power frunk not frunk elimination.
Dash is 1970ish...........I'll take the coming Lyrik.........WAAY more modern..............Paul
I’m truly sad seeing where Volvo is heading
So basically Volvo took the petrol body shell, and converted it to battery. The charging socket is where the old petrol filler used to be, and the transmission tunnel is still there in the way of rear seat passengers. What a bloody scam. And what an ugly lump. It's not an off roader, don't be so silly.
