The steal of home plate is the most unexpected play in baseball. What's amazing about this play is that the broadcast was very aware of what he was planning. You can almost see Randy's thought process as he takes his leads off third base. They knew he was planning it and he did it anyway. That's unbelievable

@@dolphinsneu It's because once Randy began his run home, the play became a different beast. When a runner commits to stealing home, especially in that situation, the play becomes a Stolen Base attempt. Because the pitcher has to throw home to attempt to stop the runner, it isn't considered a pitch when attempting to throw out a runner despite the ball ending up in the same spot regardless of whether it was a pitch or an attempted throw out.

Honestly it makes sense. The stars aligned to favor him there on the steal, but also considering Lowe was behind in the count and 0 for 3 on the day, the odds of him scoring a base runner at that exact moment were relatively slim, so why not go for broke? You're already up a bunch of runs too, why not do something crazy?

that used to be considered taboo to steal home when you are ahead by 2 or more runs. I remember years ago i was watching a Cubs/Cards game in the late 80s and Vince Colman stole home plate when the Cards were up by 3 (4 after the steal) and my stepdad says that "expect a ball to the head after that, you don't steal home when you're in the lead" as if it was a well known unwritten rule, of course this was not the play offs and so maybe that unwritten rule does not count as much.
