Diana has a very rare voice. She is a contralto and she is also polyphonic, which means she can produce several tones at the same time. It makes her voice sound so full.
Diana's background: Diana was born on May 31, 2003 in the Far East of Russia. She was severely abused as a small child and abandoned on the street by her birth mother in winter when she was only 3 years old with a broken collarbone. She was then taken to an orphanage where, after more than one year, she was adopted by Irina Ponik, a massage therapist. At the age of four and a half, Diana still could not speak properly. She also stuttered. Experts recommended that she take singing lessons to improve her general speaking and vocal skills.
This is a new TV show in Russia. There are 9 weeks with 9 shows and 9 well known artists. Diana is the youngest artist. They had to sing songs from 9 genres. The last TV show was on 20. November 2021. The 9 artists are also the judges for the other singer. And Diana (18 yo) won the overall competition of which Diana won 4 and took 2nd place once. She shocked the other singers with the first song. The Crow was her masterpiece in this competition, in my opinion. The judge who stands up is the great opera singer Yusif Eyvazov and the husband of Anna Netrebko, who is world famous. He's very impressed.

Greetings from Scotland! Great reaction to a great young singer! This is the tip of an enormous iceberg! Diana was 18yo here and I would like to explain what, for want of a better word "created" this unique phenomenon! This is not to solicit pity from you but to inspire you, as it has done with me.
She is 19yo currently but I've been following her since she was around 13yo. Diana is a natural Dramatic Contralto so the lower registers are her comfort zone but she now has a 4 octave range and it's increasing. She also naturally sings with polyphonic overtones so it sounds like many voices at the same time!
Diana's birthmother had multiple miscarriages but when Diana came along, she seemed to hate her. She verbally and physically abused her, trying to drown her and belittle her. It all culminated when (at 3yo) she dragged her to a bus stop with a broken collarbone and abandoned her, saying "Survive if you can" A passing relative took her in but because she cried constantly (naturally with a broken collarbone) she took her to the authorities who removed Diana from her birthmothers care and placed her in an orphanage. For almost 2 years Diana never gave up hope and she knew that she was meant for something better. (This story is in her Wikipedia entry) Finally her new mother (Irina Ponik, who worked as a masseuse there occasionally) Signed her adoption papers and took her home. She vowed to pay Irina back for her kindness. Irina had a real struggle because Diana had obviously been badly affected by the experiences and at 5yo, she had a very bad stammer. It was recommended that she be taken for singing lessons to help this and immediately it was recognised that Diana had perfect pitch and an excellent ear for music and songs. 1 year later, at 6yo, Diana was performing solo on stage!
This young unique phenomenon sang everywhere and anywhere she could, working constantly to earn money for the family who rescued her. At 13yo she held her 1st solo concert and one of the songs she sang was in a very rare Sephardic Jewish/Spanish dialect, a song called "Me Voy" (I'm leaving) with a power and emotional commitment that staggers belief! ruclips.net/video/-9_c5fPrqno/видео.html
She was already winning every contest in Russia and other countries that she could get to. Then at 14yo Diana took part in an amazing Russian project "You're Super!" for abandoned/disadvantaged children (because Diana spent time in an orphanage) The 1st song she performed shocked the judges and audience so much, it went viral. At the age of three in the middle of Russia's far northern Winter she was abandoned, injured, at a bus stop where she was rescued and sent to an orphanage. At the age of 5 she was still traumatized and unable to speak properly. A massage therapist who visited the orphanage trying to help kids, was the first to recognize something special in this little girl, and eventually adopted her. Diana was sent for singing lessons because it was thought that this might help her learn to speak without impediment. Only two years later she started singing in local theater, and in street plays and performances. And soon after was entered in a Russian TV music competition for disadvantaged children. By the age of 10 she was winning local competitions, singing on live TV shows, and her songs started showing up on RUclips. Two months ago, at the age of 18, her first performance during a new Russian television competition with several other renowned performers, has gone viral and has garnered hundreds of RUclips 'reaction' videos, and millions of viewers. Her first song at the competition, an entirely new take on Elvis Presley's 'Can't Help Falling in Love with You' has been called mesmerizing, transcendental and other-worldly...it highlights her uniquely deep voice, and effortless range from low to high, along with her trademark dramatic and passionate interpretation. Read about her history. That will tell you what you need to know about her early history, and it won't be pretty and nice either. With that in mind, it is almost impossible to read and believe Diana has risen to the heights she has achieved.
But I will give you a clue; if anyone was a demon it was her mother. And for Diana to break out of that tight grip was a feat of superhuman strength. Read and you will see, trust me. She shed horror for love and all her fans love her for it.

LucieV, you are 100% correct. Diana Ankudinova has "a hell of a deep voice for a woman”; Now here is the rest of the story. This performance took place on September 25, 2021, when Diana Ankudinova was 18 years old during a new vocal competition called the ShowMaskGoOn, and Diana was competing against other professional singers. This new vocal competition was televised over a nine-week period, one episode per week with other professional singers competing against each other, and based on the individuals' performance they awarded judging points to each other. When not competing, Diana was also a member of this judging panel which brought the total to 9 singers competing against each other.
Every week, each singer took the stage and performed a different song over each of the nine weeks. Each contestant had to sing a different song from a different genre using different styles. The ShowMaskGoOn! concluded on November 20, 2021.
Diana was the first to perform and her cover of Elvis Presley’s classic, “Can’t Help Falling In Love” demonstrated Diana Ankudinova has, what many vocal professionals believe, developed a true contralto voice type, and for those in your audience that may not know, a contralto voice is the lowest kind of female voice, and a true contralto voice type is very, very rare.
First, to answer a very common question asked about Diana's vocal range, because vocal range helps in defining a female singer's voice type. At age 13 in 2017, her vocal range was measured from a low of D3 to a high of A5. As of September 2021, 5 years later at age 18, her lower available range was measured from a low of C3 to a high of B♭5, giving Diana almost a 3-octave range. But it's not just about how low she can go, it's the exceptional quality of her tone in her lower register. It's in her timbre, the roundness, the fullness, and the depth of her voice, along with her ability to create and access an enormous amount of resonance that helps to further define Diana as a "dramatic contralto", the deepest, darkest, and most powerful contralto voice type and is the rarest of the rare contralto voice types.
So, the question becomes, how does Diana do it? How can such a young female singer achieve such a low, rich, deep, resonant, and profound sound? Without actually being able to scope her vocal tract while she is producing those low notes to see what is actually happening, the general conciseness of many vocal professionals is to simply attribute Diana’s unique ability to her winning the genetic lottery. Diana was just born with vocal anatomy that is unique. Diana’s vocal folds, (vocal cords), appear to be longer and thicker than most female singers. Her larynx also appears to be larger and her pharynx similarly appears to be longer than other female singers. It’s this unique vocal anatomy that gives Diana Ankudinova the ability to produce low, deep, rich, full sounds that along with her unique tone quality and her ability to access an enormous reservoir of resonance makes her stand out, but without actually scoping her vocal track, there is no way to be 100% certain.
Also, Diana is also a true polyphonic singer, which is another extremely rare accomplishment for someone so young. A singer who has mastered this polyphonic vocal technique can create one, and sometimes two, different tones at the same time which adds to the harmonic overtones and undertones that can make it sound like a synthesizer was put on her voice, or there is more than one voice singing. This polyphonic ability is why some people mistakenly believe Diana Ankudinova is using some form of electronic voice manipulation or pitch correction software to alter or adjust her sound. Others believe another person is singing in the background off-stage, or she is lip-syncing over a previously recorded vocal track that has been altered or modified. There is nothing artificial or any manipulation going on at all with Diana's voice. Neither is anyone else singing with her that is off stage nor is she lip-syncing to a vocal track. The other voices you are hearing are just vocal backing tracks used to fill in and round out the performance along with the backing track for the musical score. Diana Ankudinova and only Diana Ankudinova is actually singing “Can't Help Falling In Love”.
During Diana’s performance, the judge on the top row who is the first to stand during the performance is Russian opera tenor, Yusif Eyvazov from Azerbaijan who was invited to be a special guest judge for the inaugural episode of TheShowMustGoOn vocal competition. Yusif Eyvazov is also married to world-famous opera soprano Anna Netrebko. At the end of Diana Ankudinova’s performance, she receives a standing ovation from her fellow competitors and a fellow judge, the blond woman dressed in red, standing in the center row is Julia Parshuta, who is also a well-known contemporary Russian singer, and Julia looks totally shocked at the end of Diana's performance. She puts both hands on top of her head with a look of total surprise and bewilderment. Julia Parshuta, along with the other judges now realize that she and all the other singers (competitors) will have to go against Diana, which everyone now knows is a generational talent. Finally, this 9-week competition ended with Diana winning.

Diana has something primal, mystical, but also sensitive and sensual in her voice and she lives her songs. She also has a perfect pitch and her sense of rhythm was exceptional even as a little girl. Diana is a dramatic contralto, the rarest and lowest female voice type (her range C3-D7). Her voice has natural polyphonic overtones and sometimes specifically an undertone = sub harmonic. (You hear the voice an octave lower than Diana sings. Not everyone can hear that.)
Undertone singing is a singing technique that belongs to the main category of overtone singing in which the vibration mode of the vocal cords is modulated to produce sounds that are below the singing tone.
In contrast to overtone singing, these tones are not overtones (i.e. integral multiples of the fundamental, but integral divisors of the fundamental, so-called subharmonics.)

Diana didn't have a happy start in life.The woman who gave birth to her had many pregnancies, only Diana survived. She did not love her child, cruelly abused him and tried to drown him.
The 3 year old child was found at a bus stop with a broken collarbone and taken to an orphanage. There she finally found love ... from Irina Ponik, a massagetherapist. Taking a young child into the family was not easy for Irina. Her son was already 20 years old, daughter Nastya 17 years. Now start all over again? Yes!!! Diana came to a poor but loving family when she was 5 years old.
Diana spoke badly, cried a lot and was still very scared but she all sing songs from cartoons. The doctor recommended singing lessons and so, the singing teacher Elena Kazantseva discovered Diana's talent. And it all started at the age of 5...
During 2008 to 2012 Diana sang around 40 songs, including at competitions.
Her mother, Irina Ponik, turned her whole life inside out and started all over with a new motherhood and many new professions - seamstress, manager, vblogger… admirable.
Everything that has to do with Diana's singing training, performances, competitions, looking for sponsors is organized and coordinated by her mother Irina Ponik. She took extra sewing courses too. Since then, she's been sewing all of Diana's stage costumes, because all of these things consume the family budget.
Irina accompanies her daughter on trips and captures her life in photos and videos with the persistence of a visionary. It is admirable how she promotes her daughter's career, teaching her how to fly but makes sure that she is down to earth Remains.
Diana impressed with her talent in over 50 national and international competitions. Her confidence grew, her voice continued to develop ... until one day she was asked to compete in more distant competitions so that other children could have a chance to win.
In 2012, Irina's family moved to her hometown of Toglyatti, much closer to Moscow. Diana lost her fear that the woman who bore her would kidnap her.

In 2018 and 2019 Diana entered a competition 'You are Super and won twice. That project is unique in the world, an international TV- competition especially for adopted and orphaned children.
The winner of the season will be determined by a 6-day public vote and the final took place in the Kremlin Palace and her videos were uploaded to RUclips and soon Diana had millions of fans.
The project producers help the finalists to start their studies and promote their creativity. Diana won a scholarship and Igor Krutoy (Russian music titan, billionaire, juror and sponsor) gave her a small apartment (37m²/ 398.26 ft²) in Moscow. There she lives with her mother and grandmother and was able to start her vocal training with the best teachers such as Professor Olga Donskoy. (She died of Covid-19 in October 2020). Now Diana is taught by the great Alexandra Pismennaya, who was a student of Prof. Donskoy.
The break of voice made Diana’s voice even darker and deeper. She has mastered this time very professionally and has worked hard to bring back the lost high notes and has expanded her vocal range, currently from C3 - E6. Her genres are folk-rock, folk-pop, jazz, soul, blues, soldier songs and Diana-stile… tradition meets modernity.
She loves to sing in French, but also sings in English, German, Arabic and Spanish... but only phonetically so far. She plays the piano and ukulele. She composes and creates her own songs.
But Diana is not only a great singer and storyteller. She lives her songs and touches our hearts and souls. But also she looks beautiful and she is a humble, smart and hardworking young woman. She also gives charity concerts. She loves her family and her fans. We are Diana's 'friends' and support her. Diana really appreciates that her friends helped to improve her home studio and also sponsored her first album. The Russian friends have chosen Diana as their 'national treasure'. I think it is our 'earth treasure'.

2020 Diana graduated from high school with honors as an external student a year earlier as “normal”, applied to music colleges and was rejected (examiners suspected she had a voice defect). But she is normal and healthy. Now she is a student at the university, at the legendary Russian State Institute for Theater and Variety Arts (Juilliard similar to GITIS).
In October 2021 Diana was invited to her first adult contest on Russian television 'The ShowMaskGoOn'. She won!!!
In December 2021, Dianas released her first CD with great success. Maestro Krutoy had introduced Diana to the excellent singer, songwriter and producer Brandon Stone. With Maria Tarasenko (songwriter), the trio created the 9 songs of the album and received gold in June 2022.

Diana, also called goosebumps queen, sang the cover of the cover of the song by Elvis Presley in the first episode of the competition 'Шоумаскгоон' (ShowMaskGoOn). This was Diana's first adult competition in November 2021. She was the youngest competitor (aged 18) and wowed contestants and spectators with her first song.
Rules: 9 winners of the previous shows 'The Mask', 'Superstar' and 'You are Super' took part in this new format and had to sing in 9 categories: folk hit, song at the end of the 20th century, Soviet song, pop hit, song your choice, new music, song from cartoon or film, rock hit, Grammy
The man who jumps up is the world famous opera singer Yusif Eyvazov. He is also the husband of the world famous opera singer Anna Netrebko. He is the guest of honor and awards 9 points. Each episode has a new guest of honor.
The competitors have to assess each other and have praised Diana to the skies. They said of their performance: 'Diana has no competition on the show - she amazes with her talent - it's impossible to tear yourself away from her - you want to listen endlessly, they're in tears and they're even afraid to blink' .

It was great to see your instant respect for Diana, she is an amazing vocalist. She has worked very hard to extend her working range and this was a good demonstration of her mastery.
When you commented on sounding like an angel, then a demon I was reminded of Tatiana Shmaylyuk of the band Jinjer. I think you would really enjoy Jinjer's "Wallflower" official video, not only are the visuals top notch but the band is amazing (satisfyingly complex, yet subtle) and Tatiana's vocals are heartbreakingly beautiful. Gosh Lucie - Good choice reacting to Diana - a very unique voice, though honestly I'm not sure why everyone is so enamored with this particular performance. I mean, she does it well, but the choice of renditions (original version by Tommee Profitt "Can't Help Falling in Love [DARK VERSION]" isn't all that appealing - more like an exercise in vocal embellishments than an actual song (ruclips.net/video/PDboeQfAsww/видео.html)). She has performed other songs that are actual songs that shows off her vocal chops without it being like she's demonstrating just her vocal chops - as an example, from the same competition show, her cover of the Russian rock song, the Crow - ruclips.net/video/1AT7SZDDHo8/видео.html that really shows off the true mystic nature of Diana. And from a few years earlier her cover of the French rock tune, Derniere Danse, or the Russian folk song, Rechenka, or even the American classic by Chris Iaask, Wicked Game.
If you're into talented and master of their instrument vocalists, and outstanding one is Floor Jansen. I'm really a fan of Floor's and her solo projects, which, after seeing her solo performances from her appearance on the Dutch tv show Beste' Zangers solidified my fandom of Floor. I'm going to take the liberty of posting a selected playlist of live performances that I consider the most enjoyable for me from her catalog of solo projects. She has a band she's been singing with since 2012 called Nightwish, (If you're unfamiliar with them, check out Ghost Love Score Wacken 2013 or Ever Dream Wacken 2013) which are great examples of her range. Still I'm a fan because of her solo projects.
