Honestly, the Jury would see White revising his testimony a 100 times and say, “F*ck it, this dudes clearly guilty he’s lied like ten times over the oath already!”
Unfortunately, as far as I can tell from looking into it, this is a sadly realistic look at the Japanese court system (at least as it was in 2001 when this game first came out), where the defendant pretty much _cannot_ be found innocent unless it is proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that someone else committed the crime, which usually requires a confession from the other perpetrator. At the time, over _99%_ of Japanese defendants were found guilty because of how heavily biased the system was against letting the defendant go.
One of my favorite parts of this game is how the killer breaks down once it's been proved they did it, their final form is an absolute mess and I live for it
I'm pretty sure either "Turnabout Goodbyes" or "Rise from the Ashes" actually references that idea, with Phoenix making a remark to the effect of "If Gumshoe's salary gets any lower, he'll end up having to pay to work!"

I like how in a later case it would be canonically acknowledged that the spirit medium's body and face would change to that of the spirit itself, that's why Maya turned into in this trial. (It's also the only reason why Mini Miney could even think to do the thing that she did in that spirit chamber case.) So that means with Mia possessing Maya during the trial and her being physically present in the court room next to Phoenix, EVERYONE can see her yet no one tries freaks out about it when SHE IS THE FUCKING VICTIM IN THIS CASE.
To be fair, they’d probably just assume that Maya looked very similar to Mia since they were siblings, and they never would’ve seen Mia in an outfit like that. I… also think that they’d be inclined to believe anything other than that the victim was standing right there because it sounds absurd, so they’d assume that they didn’t see her correctly when they might have glanced at her earlier. It’s still a hilarious thought, though.
My favorite moment is when they merged a 17 year old with the ghost of her adult sister, including certain visuals, just to make us turn around a piece of paper.
okay so spoilers but i still can’t believe in recipe for turnabout the only way to get kudo to talk was for maya to channel mia, and the power of old man boners was enough to get him to admit everything ✋😔
Fun fact: all of these games are a critique of the Japanese legal system, the way the games work is exactly (more or less) how the Japanese legal system works. New evidence can just be introduced during the middle of a trial (and you don’t have to inform the other side) and the legal system focuses more on convictions than the actual truth leading to prosecutors acting as Edgeworth does. The judges are often biased as that judge is and it’s often very difficult to have a defendant declared not guilty as in Japan, it’s guilty before proven innocent.
@@paracame8162 Because the puzzles are still fun, and the writing is so bad it's funny Also that's a bogus statement, that's like saying the writers of the Power Rangers are great because they had like 20 series. The funniest part of Ace Attorney playthroughs is seeing the comments from people who are mad about it being unrealistic, like how can you NOT get that it's supposed to be an absurd comedy game?
Ace Attorney Online's cases provide more of a realistic approach, since well, cracking up jokes on the way is quite hard. Yes there is some sort of improvisation, because you can't predict humans, and the trial will not go the way you, the creator, want it. So sometimes you just get witnesses out of the ass and the culprits too. One time I had a guy named some ridiculous name, just because we entered improv phase.
A lot of this is similar to how the Japanese court system already functions, including bringing in new evidence midway through a session. the courts are heavily stacked against the defense.

"that's like the police just saying I have to arrest them, even if they didn't commit a crime" That's actually pretty accurate in Japan. If you're accused once, it's extremely difficult to get out again, and even if you do, no company will want to employ you afterwards.

Fun fact: Larry Butz actually reacted in an accurate manner to how innocent people accused of murder would act. People who actually murdered someone would act more like Sawit, more calm and reserved. Usually because they don't want to look guilty. And when they run out of options, they'll back themselves into a corner. EDIT: So this actually sparked a thread I didn't expect and I'd like to clear something up. As has been said in the thread, there are exceptions to this, always. While body language analysis is a legitimate thing, there are times where it's useless. Mostly because BLA (Body language analysis) focuses on clusters of COMMON traits that MOST people do. But it easily gets thrown out the window when you try to analyze someone who doesn't fall into that neat bubble. I'm only pointing out here because I thought it was a neat detail, plus I wanted to pay respect to JCS.
I somehow only took note of this fact after enigma pointed it out as a body language analyst. Most innocents ofc produce a more natural response: fear, shock, resistance and, in the worst case, compliance. Most guilty ones usually take a more confident approach while trying to manage to look innocent, sometimes challenging (not literally) because they believe innocents are very sure they are confident in their innocence. They sometimes exhibit over-the-top reactions when information is revealed but are very careful with their actions overall which results in an unchanging stance as they planned how to play things out. This is just what I mostly got from watching him and it might be a very bad oversimplification.
very important: there are exceptions to this! someone in an intereogation room not freaking out couldn't be used to prove guilt, and on one of the very few crime shows i have watched, i have seen a person act confidently, and be proven innocent
His deus ex machina rant was 110% justified. The entire ending of that trial from first ghost appearance was bullshit. While they introduced the potential for supernatural stuff in this universe early on so that it wasn't 100% out of left field, the actual execution when it came time to use it was real lousy
@@bengal4047 Yeah, I completely agree. They probably could have done it better. But without spirit channeling, we wouldn't have gotten the entire plot to Trials and Tribulations, which has one of the best stories in any game, so that completely makes it worth it.

@@sturm9087 they aren’t canonically a couple but their relationship is widely regarded to be so close to a romance that even the game devs actively tried to include more content of them after the first game; to answer your question simply, no and no
I really like how well RT's humour + voice acting and the games over the top writing mix. Also, what really bothers me is that when picking up the receipt, Phoenix says that it is a Department Store Receipt dated yesterday. So he *saw* the front. And he *works* at this office. So there is no excuse for him not knowing that it was for the night stand.
Yeah, that case would have worked better if Phoenix discovered it himself. But they needed to introduce spirit channeling somehow, and without it, we wouldn't have gotten the entire plot of Trials and Tribulations, which makes it completely worth it, because that game's story is amazing.
@@peterjohnson11655 they could've introduced the spirit channeling as a grand reveal after the trials ends. Like, Phoenix goes back to his office to deal with the stuff Mia left behind, and then Maya (possessed) is standing there when he walks into the room. They have a conversation and explain the deal, basic closure is reached and the "Maya joins Phoenix in the law office" hook is established by Mia just directly asking Phoenix to let her join.
I just want a trial where someone says in their testimony “I hardly believe your a lawer after that!” or something and you present your attorney’s badge.
For some context, so that Maya doesn't seem totally out-of-the-blue as a character concept: Spirit mediums are actually a thing from throughout Japan's history, and have sometimes been used in trials. So there's real-world inspiration here.
You know, considering the world of AA and its inhabitants, you would think good ol' RT himself would be a perfect candidate for being one of many whacky characters Phoenix has to deal with on a daily basis.

Ace Attorney logic: It doesn't matter that you've been hired to prove someone's innocence, you MUST prove that someone else did it or else your client is imprisoned
Imagine a crime where the cause of death wasn't actually a person Someone's dead, but there's no killer, but the Judge still needs someone to go to jail
I can’t believe he’s started playing Ace Attorney. Given the original trilogy has 13 episodes (technically 14 because Rise from the Ashes) and those cases take about 5 - 7 hours, and then there’s Apollo Justice, Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice, we might expect to see this turn into at least a 30 part series.
He probably will only do the first game seeing how long the trilogy is, thats where most youtubers stop playing it, unless he ends up REALLY enjoying it and his videos do well (Really hope he does play them all though).
Tbh the thing about Turnabout Sisters is you have to be playing and taking in everything from an emotional view rather than a "gaming" view. Because objectively, it isn't an amazing case, it plays weird and as Dan noted, you're just sort of handed the win in the form of the receipt. Where the case actually shines is in the emotional implications for all parties involved. Its Maya's introduction, and one of her lowest points in the franchise, she's in such intense pain over losing her sister and is so terrified that the man who was helping her would be put in prison that she could only desperately call for her older sister. Phoenix just lost his mentor, and suddenly has to go face to face with Miles Edgeworth of all people to bring whoever took her to justice. Then suddenly he has to defend HIMSELF and it's literally life or death stakes. The case is also important for establishing "spirit channeling" which does become important in the other two trilogy games
@@ureehueurv I accidentally read that as "you have to present your badge to the boat" and not only had to have a double take but also was fully prepared for a boat to be a witness and or victim.

That’s actually really interesting, I never picked up on that.

Judge: who is the defendant?
Phoenix: it's this cinder block
I can’t believe he’s started playing Ace Attorney.
Given the original trilogy has 13 episodes (technically 14 because Rise from the Ashes) and those cases take about 5 - 7 hours, and then there’s Apollo Justice, Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice, we might expect to see this turn into at least a 30 part series.
I will be upset if he doesn't at least complete the original trilogy and not just do the first game like game grumps
He probably will only do the first game seeing how long the trilogy is, thats where most youtubers stop playing it, unless he ends up REALLY enjoying it and his videos do well (Really hope he does play them all though).
We gotta make sure he gets we enjoy the game then! Cause honestly I wanna see his reactions to Franziska and Godot...
If he does actually wanna complete the series, does that mean we also might possibly see him play the great ace attorney chronicles?
@@DramaLlamaTheatrics I don't think he will play the spin-off games, but we can hope.
Neat!
Wait until he gets to the case where he needs to present his badge.
Which game is thay in anyway??

Well, spoilers for AA6 DLC case (where we find out about it)
When the culprit/witness Pierce Nichody, a surgeon, does weird witness tactics and takes an x-ray of both Phoenix and Edgeworth. In the results, Phoenix's spikey hair and Edgeworth's cravat (cravat? Jabot? Fuck it, his crabot) are both bones. Hilarious.
And here I thought it was because of hair gel
Judge: What's the contradiction in that testimony, Mr. Wright?
Wright: You see, I'm a lawyer.

Hey, i know this is sort of unrelated to the video, but can we give RT's Editor some love and respect? I love their editing style, it makes the videos so lively and funny! and i really love that in games like To The Moon, i feel so invested and immersed despite it only being the highlights.
I can't explain it fully and precisely as to why i love their editing, but i want to express how much gratitude i have for them. Thank you, and my apologies if i sounded awkward.
I get what you’re saying. They’re pretty good at their craft. Also, I just checked, there’s a link in the description to the editor, in case you wanted to check out more of their work.
