- In this EXTENDED video I am test riding the new Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 XRt and take it off road to find out if Adventure bikes are for me.
I try to give you a balanced overview of the bike and what it can offer you

• BMW R1250 GS Review #122
I got a white 2019 1200 xrt and I love it so much. So fun in the twisty and dirt.
Thats fantastic - they really are great bikes. I hope you get a lot of fun out of yours.
I did testdrives with a BMW R1250GS and with a Triumph Tiger 1200 XRT....driving the smooth and super elastic powerfull Triumph at first and trying the really punchy BMW with its incredible torque some days later, the decision was clear after some minutes: I get my red Triumph Tiger 1200 XRT from the dealer TODAY!👍
I felt the same way but test rode both a few weeks apart.
I was a GS man for decades, now on my second 1200 tiger. What a great bike they are, smooth ,grunty ,fast a to b, all day comfortable and full of character. The GS is a brilliant bike in an efficient slightly boring way but it is not as 'cuddly ' or (I have to say) as well finished as the tiger.
I understand what you're saying about the GS - I test rode one a few weeks before the Tiger and have to say it was a superb bike - but in a kind of engineering way rather than a 'feel' way.
Thanks for taking the time to watch my video and post a comment, it's very much appreciated.
Thanks a lot for this test. It confirms that I made the right choice Tiger 1200 Desert Edition instead of GS 1250… some journalists do not even consider the Tiger 1200 as an adventure bike with off road capabilities (they are definitely wrong) so it is quite hard to see objective comparison Tiger 1200 vs. GS 1250
Thanks for the comment and the watch - if you look into my channel you'll see that a year later I too bought a 1200 Tiger and indeed take it off-road quite a lot. I absolutely love it and like you, I made the right choice
They dropped the Explorer moniker for this bike from the 2018 model and onward. Lovely bikes and great review. I have an XCa and the comfort really stands out on this bike.
The Explorer bit if force of habit to be honest. Yes, I've got to agree the bikes are so comfortable.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave a comment. It's very much appreciated
The Triumph is by far the better looking machine.
I think so too and by a long way
Bought my 2018 XRt just before Christmas, absolutely in love with it. Just a bit over 700 miles thus far, having some issues with the left side switch cube and the fact that the clutch hose is much too stressed at full left lock but other than that it's simply superb. I was a Harley-Davidson owner 3 times prior to this machine and safe to say I'm not sure I'll ever go back!
They are simply fantastic bikes. Thanks for the comments
Great Review ride. I very much enjoyed you're commentary.
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment - thats very much appreciated.
Hi Paul great video and as I mentioned few months back you will not be disappointed with this machine or the all round service from A1 which is fabulous in my opinion. 👍🏼
Thanks buddy. You can probably tell I absolutely loved the bike
That has to be one of the best test rides i have seen, Excellent buddy
Thanks buddy - I thoroughly enjoyed the bike
For six years I had a GS 1200, when I bought a new Tiger 1200, I couldn't get used to it, many things annoyed me, I wanted to exchange for GS LC, but it's a great motorcycle, I needed half a year and almost 10,000 km to find out.
It has character, it is unique, and all around me boring GS ...
Great review of the Tiger, but on serial tires, I wouldn't have the courage to go where you are.
Respect !
Thank you for taking the time to watch and write a comment. I'm very focused on changing the R1 to the Tiger but it won't be until spring 2020 now.
Agree with you man, a adventure bike has to be shaft drive to me. I have no desire to touch a dirty chain.
Cracking review Paul, road, off road and great run through the power modes etc. Lovely looking and very capable bike I might even go have a look at it you build a good case for adventure bikes.
Thanks Mark
Another great vid Paul, very good review of the Tiger. Impressed with the off road skills, that’s something I’m really wanting to try on the GS, first things first though.😏👍
Thanks Chris - it was an amazing experience for sure. Cant afford to change just yet but also loving the R1 too, so keeping the old girl isnt a hardship at the minute
Good review! Will have one in the near future! BUT funny you said, "if you want to go 0-60 in 3.2 seconds don't be looking at these bikes" when the Tiger and the GSA does it in 3.0 seconds :D
technically you are right, 3.2 isn't what these bikes do.. they are actually faster
Thank you for the comment, I'm sure you'll be very pleased with your Tiger when it arrives.
Great rewiew! I'm in love for this bike and i will buy one for sure! Much better than the BMW! Much more Style 😎 more power! More... everything! Greetings from Portugal 😀 ride safe!
Thank you so much and hello Portugal ❤
I find the Triumph significantly more attractive more than the BMW, but I also find the BMW a better bike overall. That being said I own a Tiger.
I'm exactly the same
I have a GS 1200 and will shortly be changing..the BMW is lovely but the triumph also looks good.
Will have to go for a test ride, one thing though about BMW is that they now give 3 year warranty and rescue..mmm!
I've got to agree when it comes to the styling of the Triumph
Of the 2 bikes, l pick the Explorer in a heartbeat. Have tested boght and the look and the engien sell the triumph for me. But l do want the 800xca...
You are right - they are stunning bikes
@@BikingBuddies they are
@@BikingBuddies did mot go very far on the triumph tho, but the first thing l notice was that l sat a bit on the "top" of it, not in it as l do on my vstrom, with that said you could get a lower saddle they said, and second was that floppy windscreen..on the highway it became a bit enoying.
But that tripple engien... Aaah.. That sound.. Gave it full throttle in a tunnel, and the Audi in front of me rolled down his window, so the 16year old boy in me had to do it again... :)))) its never getting boring...never..
@@toby7504 i just have the xrt for 3 weeks 😀 a bit heavy but... What a bike!😍 All the other guys that Ride other brands say it's much more stylish than a BMW! And it is! What a pleasure riding it! And i'm a short rider... 1,73 cm... I think 5'8 in UK... But each day that goes by i became more confident 👍 ride safe
@@GalambaPortugal its a beutifuel bike sir and it sure looks better then the gs. That beek has become enormus.
Ride safe sir...
Just revisiting a taste of things to come on the channel :-)
Great vid again mate, i want one too i am going to cal A1 next week and have a test, want to see how it stacks up against mine on road, and would love to try some green lane stuff never been of road.
To be fair mate, I honestly think you'll love it and would certainly suit the bike no end.
I thought the XC version was for off road, is it ok to take mag wheels off roading? Thanks for the review, I'm getting really close to buying the XCA, I think Triumph did a great job in the looks department on these bikes.
To be fair the spoked wheels are designed for off roading as this wasnt the XCA I wanted to test ride. Although having said that - I was only on a gravel track so not exactly off road
I love my explorer XRT
They really are great bikes 🏍
I'm from Middlesbrough do you know of any triumph explorer groups
@@alanhesse2507 I don't, or not explorer specific groups. It depends what your3 looking for. If its group rides or tech advice and so on. There will.be plenty on FB I'd imagine
Why are you not considering the KTM? Have a go on a KTM 1290 Super Adventure S. It will give as near the acceleration and sport bike handling (on road) you're accustomed too. I do like the Triumph and considered it, but for the money, the ktm is the clear winner for me. Its a road bike on road but will do a bit of light off roading if required.
Great video mate, get one bought if you've made your mind up 👍 But don't buy a BMW 😜
I just don't like the styling of the KTM, I never have to be honest. Then again I think a lot of bike ownership is down to styling
Fair play. Styling does play a big part in bike ownership. If you don't look back while walking away, you've bought the wrong bike 👍
@@P6_7R_Nick I think you're right saying that. To be honest the only reason I have the R1 and not the Blade or Zx10 etc is down to styling. They all out perform me by some margin, and I guess the same can be said for adventure bikes too.
I guess we all know what we like and what we don't when it comes to branding and styling.
The chain on the KTM is a deal breaker for me
Great review. Did you get one for yourself in the end?
Yes I did - not new though. I got the 1200 explorer XC at 5 years old and I love it
Great review Paul. It is interesting that the journos always claim the BMW is better, but I’m with you, if I was in the market for a 1200 I’d go Triumph too. I’d love to take my Tiger 800 on a few more tracks, but we don’t have many round here! My Tiger slowed me down quite a bit, and it now less likely I’ll lose my license!
I've liked these bikes for years and having the opportunity to ride was was just the best. The problem has always been the R1 - I get a kick from it even before I've reached to bottom of our cul-de-sac, and there are only a few houses in it!
I hope I can make the change in late summer but we'll see how that pans out. I too need to slow down a little but without compromising on enjoyment - the tiger is the bike to do that for me
Biking Buddies it sounds like you need to be a two bike family Paul hahahahahah!
@@OldManTony if only.........
Beautiful bike
It sure is!
Did you buy one in the end?...I did! I got the xrx low with extras and you don't need to be rich with the finance options.
Yes I did - I got the 1200 XC model and LOVE it - you should check out some of my other video's as I'm keen to and do take the bike off-road quite a lot. It's the main reason I made the switch.
the bike suspension might soak up that dirty track, but the lack of wire wheels could spell disaster if you hit a big pothole or rock. That's really for the road as a tourer adventure poser, rather than true adventure riding,
Agreed on all fronts. I've recently bought an explorer and have opted for the mire fitting wire spoked wheels rather than cast alloy for that very reason
great vid Paul, as to your comment on buying a secondhand 1 and being just as good....mmmm..... never had the opportunity to ride a 2019 model. Pre 2015 bike handles like its on rails, more than enough punch, toggle menu system is not quite as intuitive judging from your vid and no quick shift/ blip down and no power screen or electronic suspension but 10K cheaper. I paid just over 12K for my 2012 model new with panniers fog lights and engine bars included what is now 5 1/2 years ago. 2019 17K for base model
They are all expensive for sure. I hear what you're saying about buying used though - a lot of sense in that statement
@@BikingBuddies sorry make that 6 1/2 years ago how time flies.
There seems to be a lot of complaints about the excessive heat emitted from the bike onto the rider, what is your experience?
I didn't feel any but it was a winter test. Also I ride a 4c8 R1 with under seat exhaust so I'm probably not the best placed top comment. I certainly didn't notice anything
Good honest and best review of the Triumph Explorer I have seen 😎👍🏻🇬🇧 I own the XCA it was the last one in the show room of the old model, was a shame to leave it there 😜
Thank you for the compliment and comments. They certainly are nice bikes
Nice review. I'm now undecided on the 800 or the 1200? What would you recommend?
I'd always go for the 1200 based on torque and smooth power delivery. Also and for me the 12s are shafts drive so no chain cleaning or wear if it's used all year round or taken off road.
the 800 is a bit lighter but once the bikes moving, they all shed their weight - it's just picking it up if it's dropped that may be an issue
Guess I'll have to try both then! Cheers for the advice.@@BikingBuddies
What revs is the tiger doing at 60mph in 6th gear
To be honest and from memory I'm not 100% sure - I think it was around 3700 - 4000
Is there a problem with excessive heat from the engine to the rider?
Not that I noticed? Odd question to be fair
Biking Buddies , I have seen a review, where this was the report,,..
@@jblue1299 oh, ok. I didn't notice it to be fair and would be very surprised if that were the case. The bikes a naked so it emits less heat than the R1
@@BikingBuddies I've watched many reviews and they all mention a lot of heat from this engine through the legs and crotch, but I'm guessing that riders I'm colder damp climants probably don't notice the heat like people would in hot climates. I live in hot California and I hope its not bad because I want to buy one😀
@@markkulyas2418 I didnt notice that but there again my R1 has under seat exhausts so I probably wouldnt notice it
What is the Nationals????
The nationals are the speed limit for UK roads in non residential areas
Sorry I was out of order
Interesting comment Stephen. Perhaps you could help me out; what way you think I was being patronising?
I mean, I did buy a Triumph Explorer after that test ride and even went on Triumphs adventure training weekend. I'm looking forwards to reading your follow-up comments 👍
@@BikingBuddies I was being spiteful and I apologise to you sorry
Hey Paul! Curious to know how tall you are?
6ft mate
@@BikingBuddies Thank you! I'm 5'-10" with a 30" inseam 190lbs. I just bought the 2019 Tiger 1200 XCA two weeks ago. As long as I have one foot on a peg my other foot will be flat on the ground. When both feet are down I'm on the balls of my feet. Takes a little getting used to but I love the bike! Great review by the way! Cheers!
@@roblee9618 the seats adjustable too so with your height you should be good
@@roblee9618 - get a lust racing 20mm lowering link. Cheap enough, you must drop the forks too otherwise you ruin the handling.
Does the Tiger have tyre pressure sensors, how many litres in the tank, service intervals???
Tyre pressure sensors are an option! 20 liters at the tank
8 months later and well past the end of the summer. Well??? lol
That's a very good question. Change of job early year saw a stall in the bike exchange as it simply wasnt the right time. However, were back on track and I'm already looking to get the R1 on the market and get the change made.
If it helps, I still have an R1 but in the best part of 2 years of having the Tiger it's sat unused.
@@warmtyres I'd love to keep the R1 but dont have the space or the funds. I have to sell it to release the equity in the bike to get the tiger
No excuses for a British guy to get the name wrong LOL.... good video though. I want this new Tiger as a sport touring two wheeled hummer.
I hear what you're saying 😂
I test road one at from the triumph stand a adventure bike rally last summer I was than taken with it I’d traded my 800 in for one a week later
One point though it’s no longer an Explorer wish your you tubers would get it right
Just saying
I know, the Explorer bit is just force of habit I'm afraid.
That said, they certainly are great bikes for sure
Ok I’ll let you off or I might just insist you do all the review again
thank you like for you
Just subbed your channel . Enjoyed your enthusiastic review of the Tiger 1200. I just did a motovloggers 18month review of the 800 XRT . One of the things that always put me off the big Tiger was the extra weight. The GS carries its weight so low it doesn’t really feel like a big bike. The Tigers are by comparison more top heavy. How you you compare the top heaviness of the 1200 to the 800. ? Is a lot of the extra weight taken by the shaft drive - which would keep it lower? I guess U will just have to test ride the 1200 sometime but I wondered what you thought? Keep up the good work and perhaps check out my channel too 😁👍
the explorer name was dropped for 2018 to just the tiger 1200
I know. Several people have also commented. It's just force of habit I guess.
Thanks for taking the time to watch and leave a comment
Buy one buddy for sure, but i would deffo keep your R1 just for a blast out now and again .Your R1 will always make you wet in your pants every time you ride her.
Sadly if I do change I'll need to sell to release the equity in the R1
It looks like the tiger has put some weight on
Apparantly its lighter than the previous model
Biking Buddies it’s the way it looks chunky
Mummy i'm afraid of the big heavy bike 😂 i'm such a pussy!😂🤣
Torqe at a lower rev range LoL...
Why do you have so much trouble naming the bike ?
It's a Triumph Tiger 1200 XRt. Alzheimer's ?
Why do you have so much trouble being polite? And Alzheimer’s isn’t something to joke about!
