Looks like Jackie and and Shadow are back in the nesting mood. Shadow brought a stick, then both showed up at dusk for a round of nestorations and bumps.
Tucked (curled) hallux is another sign of nesting behavior. The hallux is the opposing and the largest talon. Eagles tuck it instinctively when around eggs or chicks to prevent accidental damage.

Jackie and Shadow's unhatched eggs were scavenged by Ravens on 3/7.
Both eggs appeared undeveloped: either they were not fertilized or development stopped very early on. There is no way to determine that an egg is unfertilized without breaking it (and the law!).

It is absolutely gorgeous to see Jackie and Shadow getting the nest ready for the next clutch of eggs. My finger's and their wings will be crossed for good luck on the next clutch of eggs. Would Jackie be doing this if she knew she was no longer 'in season' for fertile eggs? I presume they don't show nesting behaviors all year long.

Their instinct tell them this is still the season for eggs and hatchlings. Trying again is the way to move on? We shall see.

Yes, but we need to see this happen frequently, with increased activity of bringing sticks to the nest and Jackie trying out the nest bowl for size. It is a very good sign though! We will have to wait and see if the behavior continues.
Maybe Mother Nature has extended Jackie's egg laying time since this year has been so wonky. I can only hope for the beautiful pair

the odds are they won't lay eggs again this season but wouldn't it be nice if they did? Eggs laid now would have a much better chance of surviving the weather.

What do you mean by "tucked hallux"? The only reference there is to it on Google is this and other video titles containing the term.
Another sign of nesting behavior is when adult ball up their feet, curling the Hallux talon. They do it around eggs and chicks to prevent accidental damage.

Interesting that they are getting the nest all set up. They both did this before the mating began last time and before Jackie laid eggs before. It is like they are preparing again!!!! They don't usually do this unless they are on the down low that eggs are on the way....hmmm could it be? Baby eggs on the way? Shadow does seem to be quite intent on bringing sticks like crazy!!! Wow they are really busy!!! I don't think I have seen these two together for so long at the nest together shaping things. There isn't much room in there for both of them yet they made it work. Something is going down!

J&S mated at 12:23pm on Saturday, March 11. So I would definitely be keeping an eye out on Saturday the 18th for some eggs.

This is truly the Eagle equivalent of looking into each others eyes cooking and having dinner together, then looking at the stars on the porch swing holding hands and discussing life.. then cuddling on the couch discussing what to watch .. light tickling .. falling asleep together.. this is actually all that.. in their world.. it might look like two eagles organizing a nest.. but this is definitely the Eagle equivalent of a romantic evening together. I agree. It seems as if Shadow has still been ready, but Jackie wasn't returning to the nest except to steal his coot, lol. Jackie coming in and doing nestorations is a very good sign. We need to see more of this behavior!! Hopeful here too!

it's a small space for both to work in, so there was bound to be some bumping, but
the way they were rubbing flanks 80+% of the time they were at it sure looked like both
were feeling some warm fuzzies about the whole thing

Both Jackie and Shadow are lovely and interesting birds but I find Shadow to be particularly endearing.
I love these two - they are so strong and they never lose hope - how beautiful - and a living metaphor for us humans to keep going and have faith. They look refreshed and ready to begin anew!

How wonderful! I was afraid to hope for this behavior. I have found my emotions with 3 nests I have been watching this year were causing me to much stress. I had to limit my watching and carefully monitor reports about the nests. All three have had tragedies that are the way of nature. So for the last month I do checks of each cam about 3 times a day for just a few minutes. If I start getting emotional I close the cam. I have issues in life that are causing me stress that have to be managed. My husband and I are old and have major health issues. I'm very limited in energy because of my health. So I'm finding ways to manage. Now with this positive nesting behavior I feel hope J&S will try for a second brood.

It looks like they both made the nest a tad deeper and surrounded it with more sticks to protect it. I hope they mate soon or did, and will have new eggs in that renovated nest!
