Atlanta tile setter here. I like th video, I have the skillset necessary for this, and I do believe I want to go through with building floated walls and curb. I'm set on top quality and this is a good skill to learn for that. Time to grow.
Here up in canada we are pass this process, we used to float walls until Schüttler came in the picture. Things get done a lot faster. We still do float shower pans for mosaics under 1 inch, mosaics over a inch we use the Schüttler shower system, the whole kit comes with all you need. We still float floors, were we called mud work. 33 yrs experience talking. :)
I see using schluter using schluder is not about doing better it's just less of a learning curve we have the same problem here there's not a lot of guys that wanna put the time into it to get to an expert level so you end up getting greener guys and training them to do schluter. A lot to do with how long it takes to learn the process but when it comes to how long the shower will last mud last longer hands down .Another thing in this world of consumption they are trying to find ways where things last the least so they can sell you more products that is my outlook on a lot of these things.
@@SuperVPro Hey thanks for the reply, Yeah i understand, We used schluter for most of our applications here, we have been it using for yrs now. I have had the change to remove schluter shower pans and let me tell you, after 20 yrs those shower are as dry as bone, and removing the pan was not a easy job. So yeah if you know how to install it, the product it is really good.
Great video question?? Does it matter what kind of staples you use? Will it rust a few years down the road? Do I need to use galvanize or stainless steel staples?
never seen this before. I'm replacing a shower pan right not and when I did the taer out the wall tiles are spot bonded with 3/4 to 1 inch cavities behind the whole thing!! corners all cracked, wall boards were all im the pan. I'm gonna do this the bring the wall out. I suggest a whole new shower but you know that's a hard one to swallow for some so.....
How do you get perpendicular walls square? I can see using framers square on the furring strip closest to corner on each wall, but how you ensure that it’s not kicked out or in? Do you use the screed? Be cool video, someone asked on Ostrom video as well.
We make sure that the back wall is absolutely plumb and then we use that to get the angle for the side walls and make sure they are plum that way when you set your shower floor the cuts are even all around On the floor
Great video! I really appreciate hearing the details and product names. I also had a hard time making out some of the things you said, as the music was too loud. Just my $.02, but when watching 'how to' vids, I greatly prefer no music at all.
Hey Ace! Glad to see another local Cali guy! I want to know why you do the mud on the left side of the shower. Is that for buildout of liner? Do you one coat it with chicken wire or 2 coat with diamond lathe? Really curious to your method because it seems like a good way to go!
The only reason we did not do mud on the left side but red guarded it because there was some issue with clearance so the home owner opted to save a 1/2 inch by red guarding and gone straight to the wall .Thank you so much for the comment
Thanks for replying! Makes sense! What I wanted to know though is I noticed there is mud at bottom of that wall with redguard on the drywall. How did you do that? Just lathe on the studs or what?
@@amonideos Yes you can put some chicken wire or stucco wire on that. Make sure do not put any staples you have your mud holding it up and is just going to reinforce your mud the reason why you don't WANT TO staples there is because that your waterline Can't have any water leaking.
Lonnie, how do you mix your clay again. I didn't understand the 3-1- 1/2 . 3 of what, 1 of what and 1/2 of what. I have to mix my own. I don't need lime. I can wait to install the tile. I have a very crooked wall.
@@SuperVPro Is it wrong to do this directly onto the studs without board? My GC is telling me he doesn't ever use any board. Makes me concerned for earthquakes and that will make it easier for tile to fall off. No?
@@kamillaeliezer4274 I think what you are talking about is a 2 coat float which is a Los Angeles way of doing it. And no there is nothing wrong with that very good system. Of course as long as the waterproof is done correctly.
I think this is pretty cool, just looking at a kerdi kit at over 600$ then I watch people install one and there is no time savings. I do not even see the skill being that much higher, just different. You had no screws, no cutting, no special adhesives, no seam taping. Looks like an inexpensive tile system that you will never see again for 20years. I have a free float one in my bathroom and its not like what you see on typical renovation videos. Its hard to explain, but imagine no backer board and the mud hanging from diamond lath in the wall cavity between the studs. Its a block of steel mud and ceramic 2-3 inches thick.

3 sand 1 cement 1/2 clay
Do I need any lime? I am not going to set it the same day.
I bought some clay at a craft store. I wet it down and mixed it up with water because it is way to tough to spread or mix with sand and cement.
I am not going to set the tile the same day.
Clay or lime so the mad does not fall apart.
Can i use aluminium float strips ?
Hey what do you use to install the chicken Wire or stucco wire if staples How long , kind ?
Yes it's staples 3/8in duo fast.
@@SuperVPro you only staple it to the drywall ? or directly to the studs ? can i use longer staples ?
@@alf.m5961 just drywall some district's make as nail as well in to studs but that is not often.
What’s the situation with the shower valve wall? You didn’t float it, just REDGARD on it???
The contractor did not want the extra thickness because he could not move the fixters. Red guard is not the best way but the contractor insisted.
What's under the paper? Half inch plywood would be my guess? It does seem to be an important factor as this is never discussed...
