You are totally wrong about the explanation for ARP query for the different sub nets: the scope of the arp is the whole subnet, not for different sub nets. The network connection between two hosts in different sub net is based on IP protocol, the flow is as following(it is a simplified version(not for multiple Ethernet cards)): 1.The sending host will check the target host IP to see whether it is in different subnet, if it is, then it is trying to connect to the gateway 2. It query the gateway mac address 3. It sends the packet to the gateway with link layer package 4. on the router, it will extract the IP packet to see which target it should send and if the target is in one of its sub nets, if so, it query the target mac with ARP and wrap the IP packet and send the packet directly to the target.
