Nebraska simply dominated college football in the decade of the 90's. The '95 team will go down as one of the all time greatest teams in college football history. The Defense rests, Your Honor.
I would have loved to see the huskers play Michigan that year, it would have been one hell of a game. I do think Nebraska would have won because Michigan had a great Defense but their offense was suspect. Nebraska had both a good offense and defense
@JonnyPeace07 part 2, Nebraska played 4 ranked teams during the season beat them by an average of 26.8 points per game, and 5 teams Nebraska played finished ranked in the AP top 25. Michigan on defense was ranked #1 in the Nation, Nebraska's defense was comparable at #6.. However on offense Michigan only averaged 388.9 yards a game on offense (207.0 passing, 181 rushing) Nebraska was ranked #1 offensively Nebraska averaged 392 a game RUSHING! More than Michigan did running and passing..
Michigan had trouble against a couple-loss team Washington State in the Rose Bowl while Nebraska completely demolished Peyton Manning and Tennessee. If they had that much trouble beating an average Washington State team, imagine the nightmare they would've had against a powerhouse like Nebraska. The Huskers would have mopped the floor with you guys. Congratulations on the pathetic wooden trophy, but we'll keep the crystal ball.
@JonnyPeace07 While Michigan did perhaps have their greatest team in their history in 1997, some of the things you stated just aren't correct. #1 Nebraska did not need a 5th down (that was Colorado vs Mizzou in 1990). #2 You stated Michigan had the more difficult schedule. While Michigan's schedule strength was ranked #32 that year Nebraska's wasn't far behind at #41. Michigan played 7 ranked teams during the season beat them by an average of 13.0 pts but only 3 finished ranked.
Michigans defense would have held Nebraska to less than 42, but Michigan wouldn't have been able to put up much, if any, on nebraska. That ball control, power run game would have gotten to em in the second, just like tenn. To be honest, I challenge the validity of any poll released before the last game of the season! That's ridiculous!
I love Michigan fans who say this title was a gift for Osborne for retiring. That's like giving bill gates a billion when he retired so he could finally be rich. Lets overlook the fact that the gift was the fact that the big ten hadn't had a title since the 70's. theirs was the gift.
Not sure how old you are bud, but there was no national title game or BCS at the time of this game. There was a bowl coalition, the Big 10 and Pac 10 had not agreed to play outside the Rose bowl so Michigan got stuck playing Washington State and Nebraska went against Tennesse.
@JonnyPeace07 part 3 Nebraska averaged 514 yards a game total offense gave up just 73 yards a game on the ground and 184 passing.. The way I see it Michigan would have slowed Nebraska down no doubt, however that task would have been much more daunting for the Wolverines than for Nebraska slowing the sub par Michigan offense down. Prediction at the Half Nebraska leads 14 to 7, but pulls away in the second half winning 38 to 17.
The Rose Bowl was not part of the Bowl Coalition that year. The Big 10 Champion was required to play the Pac 10 Champ in the Rose Bowl. Same thing happened in 1994 with Penn State having to play in the Rose vs Oregon rather than play Nebraska for the national championship.

@huiblinks182 If I remember right the odds makers came out with a what if point spread for the game of -7 points in Nebraska's favor. Nebraska would've wore down Michigan to the tune of 24-14 to 31-14. It's really too bad that those two teams didn't meet. If we had some better people that controlled college football, an extra game could've and should've been set up after the bowl games. I remember Osborne even saying he would support that.
Right. And no I've never played football. And your also right about turnovers alone didn't beat Tennessee. Turnovers at bad times did. And that powerful running game of Nebraska.
@pp3k3jamail the national title team didn't have peyton manning or leonard little. Nebraska had some great teams in the 90s and they would have crushed Michigan and Desmond How.... I mean Charles Woodson... I get them confused. (who would have never won the Heisman if he played for a team other than Michigan, Notre Dame, or Ohio State) And the 95 Huskers are the greatest college football team of all time hands down.
@statman29neb Exactly. Nebraska, like all running teams, start slowly but like a juggernaut they just don't stop. 3 ypc becomes 4ypc and finally the bruising offensive line breaks your will leaves you gasping for air. 5 ypc, 6 ypc 8 ypc and you are pummelled into submission.
why did u even bring up michigan on a nebraska video??? nebraskas had the best team in college football history in 1995 if u want to talk about whose had their best years... they didnt just beat the teams they played they killed the teams by 30 points or more that year and had a back-to-back national championship wins
Nebraska and Michigan both went undefeated; they deserved to share the title. Until there's a playoff, you'll always have these types of argument. Heck, just last season, we had FOUR teams that had legitimate claims to the National Championship (Florida, USC, Utah, and Texas).
Just stating my oppinion but I think Utah was way underrated and should have been in the national championship game I would have liked to see if they could play the same against Oklahoma or Florida
I'm not sure who would have won, but clearly the fans lost. People who complain about the BCS must not have been alive in '97 to witness the tragedy of having to watch two separate title games when that could have been a classic. Both were great teams, and both deserve to be called National Champs. The NFL only has 32 teams, so let them have one champ. D-1 has 119 teams.
While I was only 7 at the time of this game I remember it and remember how good we were, the huskers I mean. It sucks that within my lifetime we've gone from powerhouse to second rate and all because of cosgrove and callahan. I hope Bo can bring us back but will they give him a chance? They didn't give Solich one.
i was at this game, and as for the slow start rushing, it rained pretty much the 3 days leading up to the game, and stopped about 2 hours before kickoff. Also there werent alot of bad calls either way. You want to compare college to NFL, you cant look at all the good NFL players that come from Div II nowhere schools. I prefer college, they play for pride, not paychecks
I love the comment from the commentator - "If they hadn't turned the ball over the in the first half, I'm not sure Nebraska would have scored." That's the most ridiculous commentating ever. You can't even know that for sure. There's no way. Besides, we dominated the second half so bad, you could throw the first half out and we still destroyed them.
@michiganfootballfan You had a fabulous defense with Charles Woodson leading the way. But Nebraska had a good defense and a great offense. You had a suspect offense. Thus Nebraska's defense keeps it close until the 4th quarter. You contain their ground game but the constant pounding takes it tolls on your defense and Nebraska takes the lead and the game in the 4th quarter.
@6Ott7 Also, you forget that Michigan went undefeated in what was rated the toughest college football schedule in 1997, the same way strength of schedule is measured today in the BCS. Is it unbelievable that the top rush defense team would stop nebraska? Especially if they were given a month to prepare against the option? You say that Charles Woodson would be a non factor, but he's the best run-defense cornerback IN THE NFL TODAY.
@redringofdeath3000 the 2007 kansas team didnt even win the big 12....they also only beat 1 ranked team during the regular season (#24 kansas state) they didnt play texas or oklahoma....
K-State(2nd B12) vs. Syracuse(2nd Big East), Mizzou(4th B12) vs Colorado State(WAC champ), OK State(3rd B12) vs Purdue(4th B10), and Texas A&M(5th B12) vs UCLA(3rd P10). Result:1-3. Objective? Big 10: less conf teams, more bowl teams playing better teams same wins. Big 12: more teams in conference, less teams go to bowls, play inferior competition and same wins. The no D league does today and always has sucked it up as a conference. Conf strength in 97: 1 B10 2 P10 3 ACC 4 SEC 5 B12 6 Big East
Actually, Nebraska beat the crap out of Washington. Washington was ranked #2 when Nebraska played them then afterwards they completely melted down. The game wasn't nearly as close as the 27-14 score either.
@michiganfootballfan michigan doesnt have much to discredit...what does leather helmet football prove? i just go off of stats and facts...scholarships were equal for ALL TEAMS around 1975 or so...a level playing field was the best thing to ever happen to college football.
@6Ott7 The Big 10 was better back then. Tennessee played THREE SEC teams that ended that year RANKED. They lost to both Florida and Nebraska, the only 2 top ten teams they played against. Yes, I can understand how you could make the case that Nebraska was better. I disagree with it but I see the case. But to say that Tennessee was better or on par with Michigan in any facet of the game in 1997 would be humorous coming from a Tennessee fan but sad coming from a Michigan fan..
@michiganfootballfan hold on now....how in the hell can you bring up nebraska losing to kansas and getting 76 dropped on them when michigan LOST TO A 1AA TEAM AT HOME RANKED #5??????
Excuse me Florida and Georgia were top 20, not 10, and the fact that the Big 10 sent 2 more teams with 1 less member clearly illustrates they did in fact do better in nonconference play. Your argument: MSU(5th in B10) vs Washington(2nd in P10), Ohio State(3rd B10) vs FSU(1st ACC), Penn State(2nd B10, Michigan destroyed their best players) vs Florida(2nd SEC) and my favorite Purdue(4th B10) vs OK State(3rd B12). Come out 1-3. Should be denigrate when compared to the Big 12 which was....
@michiganfootballfan The way I see it at the end of the Mizzou-Nebraska game of 1997, the refs blew a pass interference call on Mizzou that would have put Nebraska at first and goal at the one with plenty of time... So we needed a fluke catch to win the game it should not have come down to that anyway. The football gods saw fit to give it to God's favorite team. Not taking anything away from Michigan's greatest team in 50 years had great respect for them. But Nebraska was the balanced team.
Nebraska was only +1 in Turnovers in this game Tennessee gave up 409 yards rushing, I think they lost the game because Nebraska was the far superior team.
Michigan scored 30+ points in 3 games that year. Nebraska DIDNT score AT LEAST 30+ points in three games. Michigan was THE ONLY Big 10 team to win their bowl game. Not only did the rest of the teams lose, most of them lost big. (Michigan St 51-23, Ohio St 31-14, Wisconsin 33-6) This illustrates most of the "ranked" teams Michigan played, could not hold up outside their conference. Bowl games, Michigan barely beat Wash St 21-16. Nebraska beat a Manning lead Tenn 42-17. Objective?
@michiganfootballfan you hit it right on the nose...the NCAA does not claim 13 titles from alabama...thats why they are called CLAIMED TITLES same thing with notre dame, michigan and USC...the reason is because before the AP anyone could crown you champion and some were retroactive titles. bama got credit for the title in 1941 bama finished 20th in the AP but they "claim" to be champs...when you look up the records you will laugh your ass off..
@michiganfootballfan nobody has dirt on michigan??? lets remember that michigan only has 1 title since 1948!! what have they done in modern day football really??? no..the #5 team in the nation doesnt just lose AT HOME TO A 1AA TEAM...was nebraska even ranked when they lost to KU? i think not...they were rebuilding. i dont know what you mean by "dirt" but many programs have passed michigan i was at the michigan/oregon game at autzen and then watched them embarrassed michigan at the big house.
@michiganfootballfan from what i hear mark cuban is trying to put his millions into a playoff....but like you said were stuck with the BCS...too much money for these few men to make then sharing the pot.
@michiganfootballfan being #1 in wins all time only means one thing...you've been playing football longer than some programs...what matters is championships and michigan has 1 since 1948....im sure they won a lot of game in between but no titles...team like miami, florida state, USC etc...have passed michigan when it comes to what people care about...you can have all the tradition in the world but nothing to show for it. michigan hasnt won a big game since 1997.
@michiganfootballfan oregon's coach is really arrogant and he called plays arrogantly....he knew that the read option was NOT working yet he kept running it...he passed for 374 yards yet on that goal line drive he ran the read option 4 TIMES IN A ROW!!! that game was a splitting image of the rose bowl last year....he forgot what got him to the big game and tried to be a little too arrogant...the defense got oregon the ball back so many times and he blew it for them.
Yea if you watch this film and the seasson from 93-97 and compare that to USC today.... nah USC would've been beat. Now i'm a huge husker fan, i think usc ight've come closer to nebraska than any of the teams they beat for the National Titles but not beat them.
@michiganfootballfan they have this idea that they will be back in the title game next year as if its easy...they open with LSU in cowboy stadium they have to travel to stanford, to UW and to arizona....they wont win them all.
Did you ever play football? Turnovers are usually caused, not just "oops I dropped the ball". Also, Statman is right plus one doesn't constitute a 25 point ass whoopin.
Oh look, you just ranted and tried to deflect without making any real response to my argument. So while you're insulting me for not being able to argue, while really all you were doing was trying to deflect from the fact that you have no argument, you have no argument of your own. Your logic is, if anything, entertaining for me to laugh at.
At that time the Big 12 was the best confrence is football, they kicked the crap out of us, they were a much more physical football team, any Vol fan that sayd diff, needs their heads checked lol.
@michiganfootballfan if college football was about tradition the BCS wouldnt exist...we would still have traditional rose bowls and orange bowls...we wouldnt have the go daddy.com bowl or the fight hunger bowl...its all about money now...the days of tradition are dead. you can count all the titles you want before the AP so does army and princeton but no one takes them serious. college football now is a "what have you done for me lately" sport.
@teuen101 tennessee lost!!! HOW IN THE HELL DO THEY HAVE A BETTER TEAM???? as i recall the final score was 42-17....not only did they lose they got SMOOOOOOOOKED!!
@banksfan02 michigan has 2 national titles since the beginning of the AP which started in 1936...any other title before then are highly suspect and more than likely shared with multiple teams.....nebraska has no pro team??? neither does michigan ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.....the lions all time passing leader is still BOBBY LAYNE!!!!! i believe he has been retired since the 60s....
Just being true here Michigan would've had has there asses kicked any other way no matter what Nebraska was a bad ass team because of Tom Osborne but pelini will make it happen again
Oh your DAD says that the Huskers are better, why should I have to admit that NU was better when they weren't? I coach football too and having actually watched both play(unlike you), I know that based on the stats, based on common opponents, based on records, and based on flat out talent Michigan was the better team.
@michiganfootballfan who said it wasnt a split title?...MICHIGAN HAS 2 RINGS SINCE THE AP (1936)....anything before then is suspect...back then you had instances where up to 4 teams would share championship....if joe blow magazine called you the champ you could call yourself the champ....im not a nebraska fan and the fact is nebraska DIDNT WIN THEM BACK THEN so deal with the fact that michigan has been an underachieving program for a long time....almost 70 years. give me rings not tradition.
This team would wipe the floor with Michigan. It'd be over before the 1st half ended.
GKG35 -UNDOUBTEDLY!!!
Nebraska simply dominated college football in the decade of the 90's. The '95 team will go down as one of the all time greatest teams in college football history. The Defense rests, Your Honor.

Its amazing that Peyton Manning has the same arm throwing motion and quick releast from college to the pros. He is arguably the best QB ever.
Nebraska's 3rd string would have tore BLUE a new one...
Anyone else watching this after Frost came back as coach?!
@JonnyPeace07 part 2, Nebraska played 4 ranked teams during the season beat them by an average of 26.8 points per game, and 5 teams Nebraska played finished ranked in the AP top 25. the option is such a thing of beauty when run well
Michigan haven't faced a running attack like Nebraska! Michigan would had lost if they would had met up. No debatting!
Michigan had trouble against a couple-loss team Washington State in the Rose Bowl while Nebraska completely demolished Peyton Manning and Tennessee. If they had that much trouble beating an average Washington State team, imagine the nightmare they would've had against a powerhouse like Nebraska. 110%!! 🌽 would’ve mopped the floor with wolverines, pry a week post dominantly burying these volunteers EVEN

Washington State's 1,000 yard rusher Black was out against Michigan in the Rose Bowl!! Nebraska would have Blasted michigan

smwest95 Michigan wins a NC every 50yrs like clockwork.
No Bill Gates need billions to get laid paying Epstein. Disgraceful.
@JonnyPeace07 When did this alleged 5th down take place? Dont make up things to make your argument sound better.
This the same Tennessee team the won the national title the next year
GO BID RED!! I forgot how amazing our 97' team was. Damn
Not sure how old you are bud, but there was no national title game or BCS at the time of this game. There was a bowl coalition, the Big 10 and Pac 10 had not agreed to play outside the Rose bowl so Michigan got stuck playing Washington State and Nebraska went against Tennesse.

@Mr420woo your trying to compair ahamn green and grant wistrom...to manning and al wilson and L.little and J. lewis ?...please..

I've said it before, I'll say it again. 2010 will finally be the year we win against you in the regular season. Bring it.
Nebraska was a juggernaut back then. My oh my, how the mighty have fallen.
Right. And no I've never played football. And your also right about turnovers alone didn't beat Tennessee. Turnovers at bad times did. And that powerful running game of Nebraska.
how much crap is it, that ppl say michigan wouldve beat a team that put up 42 points on the number 3 team
@arrowsbydish actually he is their wide reciever coach
nebraska used to be beasts in football
Nebraska needs to run this offense again.
Greens Speed, vision and POWER!!!!
we need to start the last part of the decade with a huge bang lets get ranked NE!!!
@pp3k3jamail

Goddamn do I miss this offense. :(
11 years later. Yep
@@tomwagner6334 :( yep
It's funny how SEC fans tend to forget about this game right here and the game against Florida. They also tend to get quiet whenever i bring it up.
Nebraska won four of their five national championships by beating SEC teams in their bowl game. LSU, Alabama, Florida and Tennessee.
@6Ott7 Also, you forget that Michigan went undefeated in what was rated the toughest college football schedule in 1997, the same way strength of schedule is measured today in the BCS.

It would have been a fun game if Nebraska played Michigan. that would have been epic

69 yards rushing.first half . 409 total, hhhmmmm that says something .
nah man I got them on DVD
Defense wins championships. Sooooo true.
me too, brother. Me too.

That comment so clearly demonstrates that you have no clue what your talking about that I have no response to it.
True dat!
@teuen101 That doesn't even make sense. "Oh sure we lost by every metric, but we were still better."
@michiganfootballfan i think TCU would have done a better job than oregon's bed wetting team....
Assistant coach with Oregon
I would say Scott Frost out passed Peyton by forever!
@arrowsbydish wide reciever coach to be exact
@michiganfootballfan they have this idea that they will be back in the title game next year as if its easy...they open with LSU in cowboy stadium they have to travel to stanford, to UW and to arizona....they wont win them all.
@gerdesbig58 michigan has 1 national title since 1948....enuff said.
Did you ever play football? Turnovers are usually caused, not just "oops I dropped the ball". Also, Statman is right plus one doesn't constitute a 25 point ass whoopin.
Yeah... But the '71 OU team wasn't good enough to win the Game of the Century!
I am a Oklahoma fan....if Nebraska had played Michigan that year Nebraska would have kicked the Hell out of michigan's Ass
second best ever, next to 95. 71 oklahoma wasn't bad, either.
Oh look, you just ranted and tried to deflect without making any real response to my argument. So while you're insulting me for not being able to argue, while really all you were doing was trying to deflect from the fact that you have no argument, you have no argument of your own. Your logic is, if anything, entertaining for me to laugh at.
Check this out on youtube; just copy & paste: Husker Pump Up Pre-Game vs KU 1995
@osamabindrinkin40s the best ever has more than 1 super bowl ring and better than a .500 playoff record....
@teuen101 tennessee lost!!! HOW IN THE HELL DO THEY HAVE A BETTER TEAM???? as i recall the final score was 42-17....not only did they lose they got SMOOOOOOOOKED!!
SCOREBOARD BIIIIIIIIIIATCHES!
Tennessee beat themselves in this game with turnovers.
Penn St ended 2nd because they failed to beat Oregon in a convincing way and Danny O'Neill killed the Penn St Secondary with 456 yds passing. Sorry
